    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] DAR Memberships based on Descendancy from Gaspar Rorick of Sussex County
    2. Carol Ann Hilton
    3. Greetings all! As you may recall, I posted a while back about Miss Margaret Cox of Newton, who, according to a clipping transcribed by a cousin of mine, read the biography when Gaspar Rorick's DAR marker was dedicated at Papakating Cemetery in the 1930s. She seemed to be a descendant, according to the clipping, of a daughter (Betsy) and son-in-law (David Carr) of Gaspar's of whom I was unaware, as were other Rorick researchers who contacted me. I finally made it downtown to the DAR Library this afternoon. There is no file on Gaspar Rorick, as there is on many individuals who are listed in the Patriot Index. So, I asked to find all DAR memberships claiming descendancy from Gaspar Rorick. There are three. All are older applications, which means that they are on negative microfilm (i.e., white writing on a black background) and extremely difficult to read as a result. The situation was further complicated by the fact that the library was repainted yesterday, and I was getting a headache from the paint fumes. I gave up on the two where the applicants had used their very best cursive: those belonged to Elizabeth Fuller Smith Cahill (whose first husband was Ed. St. Clair Smith and whose second husband was a Mr. Cahill) and someone whose name seemed to be Augusta Hinsdale Speed (but all I'm sure about is the Augusta part). Elizabeth Fuller Smith Cahill seems to descend from the marriage of Gaspar's daughter to Thomas Van Sickle. Augusta Hinsdale Speed (or whatever her name turns out to be) seems to be a descendant of Betsy Rorick and David Carr. I have asked for copies of their applications to be made and mailed to me. Hopefully, they will be more readable. The third application was for Miss Margaret Cox who, bless her!, typed her application. It didn't fill in many more details than my previous posting but it did have dates, which may make it easier to research her lineage. David Carr (b. 12 May 1781, no date of death given) married in 1807 Betsey Rorick (b. Sep 1784, d. 9 Jan 186_). Mary Carr (b. 12 Apr 1811, d. 11 Feb 1864) m. 18 Oct 1828 to James DeWitt (b. 29 Jul 1805, d. 25 Jun 1893). Margaret DeWitt (b. 14 Apr 1846, d. 31 Dec 190_) m. 26 Feb 1868 to Lewis J. Cox (b. 22 Jul 1842, no date of death given). Martin J. Cox (b. 2 Jan 1875) m. 14 Apr 1903 to Nellie S. Fotens (b. 8 Nov 1876). I will keep you posted as this line of research develops. Carol Ann
