Pat, I know I'm not Alan, but I use to live right outside Budd Lake where the Raritan River started behind the old municple building. This branch of the Raristan River is approximately 30 miles east of the Delaware Water Gap and runs east and empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Perth Amboy. The two rivers never meet. For more information on this LANNING family, please see... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/lanning.pdf or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/LANNING.TXT Despite my own presentation of Robert's line of descent from John-1 LANING of Newtown, Queens Co., Long Island, NY, I remain somewhat skeptical of the secondary sources utilized so I would greatly appreciate additional evidence to confirm or correct the lineage. Thanks, Perry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2007 16:11:19 -0500 From: "pascalfl" <pascalfl@comcast.net> Subject: [NJSUSSEX] Lanning/Fuller To: <NJSUSSEX@rootsweb.com> Just got a copy of this from another researcher and thought I would share it. (It 's my abridged version.) History of Jay & Blackford Co., (IN?) 1884 pg. 799 & 800; ROBERT LANNING, general merchant, Millgrove, was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, January 15, 1820, a son of Isaac and Lydia (FULLER) LANNING, who were also natives of Sussex County, New Jersey, both dying in Guernsey County, Ohio. The father was eleven years older than his wife, and his death occurred eleven years before she died, her death occurring in 1884. Our subject's grandfather, Robert LANNING, was born in New Jersey, and died in Guernsey County, Ohio, aged eighty-four years. His father was an Englishman by birth, and on coming to America, settled in New Jersey. The FULLER family came to America prior to the Revolutionary war. Eli and Martha (RUNDLE) FULLER, the maternal grandparents of our subject, were natives of New Jersey and Connecticut, respectively, and both died in New Jersey, the former aged fifty-five, and the latter at the advanced age of eighty years. Our subject was six months old when his parents removed to Guernsey County, Ohio, settling in the! dense woods of that county, and here he was early inured to pioneer life, his boyhood being spent in helping his father improve his frontier farm. He was married January 4, 1844, to Miss Margaret A. KENNEDY, who was born in 1817, near Bloomfield, Ohio, where she was reared, going with her parents to Guernsey County, Ohio, after she had reached maturity. Her parents, Moses W. and Esther W. KENNEDY, were born in Sussex County, New Jersey, and both died in Guernsey County, Ohio, her father aged seventy-six years, and her mother aged eighty years. Her grandfather, Robert KENNEDY, was a brother of Lord KENNEDY of Scotland, who offered a large sum of money for his brother's head. Robert fled from Scotland, coming to America, when he settle in Sussex County, New Jersey. In the fall of 1845 Mr. LANNING came with his wife and one child to Blackford County, Indiana, and bought 160 acres of heavily timbered land on section 28, Jackson Township, which had been entered from the! Government by his brother-in-law, David FISHER. While his cabin was being built he made his home with the family Emanuel FULLER . . . . . . . . . . . He lived in his pioneer log cabin some ten years, when he built a double round log house, which is still standing on the place, now used for storing hay. Here he lived until removing to Millgrove in 1870, when he erected his store building, and established his present buisness, in which he has met with fair success. He afterward built the house which he still owns and occupies. He also owns 185 acres of choice land, of which 100 acres is well improved and well tiled. He was bereaved by the death of his wife in November, 1881. They were the parents of nine children - Maria, born March 4, 1845, and died in Mar, 1854; Lydia born October, 1846, married Winfield S. MERCER, June 16, 1887; Isaac N., born December 25, 1848; Moses W., born in March 1850; Aaron , born in March, 1852; William J., born in 1854; Harriet E., wife of Ross PETERSON, of Blackford County; Mary, wife of Thomas STANLEY, living in Delaware County, Indiana. Mr. Lanning was quite a hunter in t! he early history . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Greetings, I have HeritageQuest access through my local library and I enjoy reading the Revolutionary War pension files available there. As time permits, I will excerpt them and post the abstracts here to the NJSussex list. Here's the first one I found from Sussex County... Rev. War pension series M805 roll 26 Image 533 file R260 Thomas ARMSTRONG - Thomas M(ore?) Greetings, Here is a HARDIN family outline from Snell's "History of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey" c. 1881, page 436A Joshua HARDIN The Hardin family are mentioned among the early settlers of New England; from there they removed to that part of New Jersey now Sussex County. The grandfather of our subject of our sketch was Thomas Hardin, who settled in Lafayette township, Sussex Co., before the Revolutionary war; he married Elizabeth LANCE of the same place. Later in life he removed to Ohio, where he died. Reuben Hardin, one of his sons, was born in Lafayette township, and married Susan, daughter of Casper SNOOK, of the same place. Of this union were born the following children: John, deceased, and Joshua. Joshua Hardin was born on the homestead in Lafayette, Sept. 26, 1801. He attended school and worked on the farm until he was sixteen years old, when he moved to Stillwater township, and engaged in agricultural labor until he was twenty-five years of age. He then removed to Frankford township and learned the trade of blacksmithing. After gaining a knowledge of that business he went to Newton, NJ where he remained fourteen years working at his trade. In 1855 he removed to Green township, and purchased from Ralph DILDINE the farm on which his fammily now (1881) reside. In 1830 he married Effie, daughter of Michael ROFF, of Newton township. Mrs. Hardin's grandfather was Christopher ROFF, who emigrated from Germany to this country during the middle of the 18th century. The children of this marriage are James C., of Orange, NJ; John R., living in Iowa; Matilda, wife of Peter SMITH, of Yates Co., NY; Susan; Marcus A., now living in Iowa; Mary A; Thomas W., deceased; Phillip R.; Elizabeth S., married Josiah KETCHUM, editor of the "Belvidere Apollo," Belvidere, NJ; Rev. Oscar J., missionary at Tripoli, Syria; Robert M., living in Fredon, NJ; Amanda C., married A. CRAWN, of Newton, NJ. Joshua Hardin always followed farming, and his life passed in a devout Christian manner. He was a good neighbor and kind father, and was respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Newton, NJ, which his family now (1881) attend. In politics he was a Democrat, but never an aspirant for office. His death occurred March 12, 1866. Mrs. Hardin is now living on the old homestead in Green, she is in her seventy-second year, hale and hearty, and beloved by all who know her. Happy Ancestor Hunting, Cathy
FYI, Some of the Ayres family moved to northeast Decatur Co., IN in mid 1800s, where a number of families from Sussex Co., NJ were its first settlers in 1820, some of these having resided in the Lakes area of NY and other places in between. I believe it was out of this family that the famous L.S. Ayres Dept. Store in Indianapolis, IN developed. S. Hello All, I just came across a nice map of the state of New Jersey from "historic" times. It's up on my website if anyone is interested. I believe all of the old towns are represented. http://www.midatlanticarchives.com Alan RESEARCHING: Buckingham, Gilpin, Eastburn, Jeanes, Nowland, Wade, Creswell, Vansant and related families -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Hi Nancy, I have three death notices I'd be happy to share for your page. They are for my gggggrandfather, who moved to Sparta in 1820 and died there in 1880, his son, who was born in Sparta but who died in Colorado in 1888, and my gggggrandfather's second wife, who died in Sparta in 1878. All three were published in the Sussex County Register. I also have an obit for my gggggrandfather that was published in the same newspaper the same day.
