No, I'm sorry, but my knowledge of the Brackens is limited to one marriage in my database. Maybe the other gentleman who asked the original question can help. Hi Walt, I may have some information on this family for you. I have an Anna Bracken who marred a Nicholas F. Berrigan. This Anna died in 1936, though, but in Ogdensburg. It may not be the right person, but we still may have family in common. My main interest is in the Berrigan line, but I like to learn about the whole family, including the Brackens. There may even be ties back to Ireland if we're lucky. Visit my web site at www.roots2buds.net and type in Bracken for the last name and Anna for the first name and then Search. I do have her obit online. Also, I have several grave marker photos from St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Ogdensburg you may want to see. Bonnie & all, The Sussex County Orphan Court records are on file at the county clerk's office with the rest of the probate, wills, inventories, minute books, receipt books. I can not give more particulars because I haven't been over there since they moved from the old to new buildings. They have all the probate records indexed - the oldest are indexed in books - the newest on computer. When you locate a persons name in the index, all the applicable records are listed including orphan, receipts, etc. On the trickier files, I've found the receipt file to have the best "brick wall breaking" info. It is a record of when the heirs received their inheritance - you will see records of children when they reach the age of majority, more current non-Sussexc county address for receipients, etc. To my knowledge, none of these indices is on the Internet. Cathy, Would you by chance know if there is an index to the Sussex County Orphan Court records? I didn't know these records existed until I saw your message. My g-g-grandfather Oakley Conklin was born 1823 or 1825 in Branchville, Sussex County and according to his military records was orphaned at about five years old. I'm thinking this is another source I could check to find who his parents were. I don't know who Benjamin married, if he married. We have no Abigail in our Smith Family. Most of the sons of Joshua Smith moved to Tompkins County, NY. I have not found Benjamin however, he seemed to fall off the planet. He could have passed away, I do not know. He was alive when his father made his will but that was in the 1770's. The will was not probated until 1784, so we assume that he died then. There were three daughters, Keziah, Mary, who married her cousin Joshua Smith, and Christian, who married John Biles. Have absolutely no clue what happened to Benjamin though. Take care and good luck, Marsha. -----Original Message----- From: njsussex-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:njsussex-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ann Brown Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2007 6:56 AM To: njsussex@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NJSUSSEX] Isaiah Bennett & Benjamin Smith Marsja, there was no mention of Abigail, right? There is also another Benjamin Smith, son of Joshua and Keziah Pelton Smith. Joshua Smith's will was probated in 1784. He lived in Oxford. I have tracked down most of his children, except for Benjamin Smith... Have a little more if you are interested. Hi Roger and Bob (and any other cousins) I have a book titled "The Mackey Family History" by George DeKay. In this book he tells of searching for ancestors, in the early 1980's. Book was published in 1985. This is what George wrote: "Today New Jersey is full of Mackeys and the name is not uncommon in all parts of the United States and Canada. 'Our' line is not to be confused with 'Mackie' or the Catholic line which has it's roots in Ireland. Among the Protestant Mackeys who came to New Jersey was a William (died 1764, Lebanon, Hunterdon county) and his wife Mary (died 1769, Lebanon, Hunterdon County). Her will indicates descendants as: John, Richard, Mary, and Prudence. The author speculates that the Ontario line may (underlined) decend from this Richard Mackey who was married to Mary Kalshet, daughter of Matthias and Harber Tine Kalshet. If this is true, then Matthias Mackey would be named after his maternal grandfather. The reader, however, must consider this a pure speculation, as it has not been documented as accurate information." Oshawa Pub Lib has copies of this book at the McLaughlin branch 929.2 MAC-D, it looks like there is a circulationg copy as well as Reference and Local History copy. I think Mr. DeKay stil has copies available for sale. What is your line from Matthias? Roger, are you Roger Raymond Farrow? I found you in the book. David LeBar, born 1825 in PA married Marilda Grover in Sussex County June 6, 1846. I am hoping his marriage record will have his parents and I have not been able to accomplish this any other way. The marriage is recorded in Sussex County but I have not been able to find out how to get a copy and don't know if parents will be listed. David and Marilda has births in Stillwater Twp., which are also recorded. Catherine Priest
