I called the church an Janet gave me the number for the cemetery and I spoke to Bob Stark there. He said that the Cooks were not in the list but as soon as the snow clears he will look for them. I have the wifes maiden name (King) as well as her mother's maiden name. He said there were a lot of Kings there and perhaps the family is there but not in the card file. Thanks for your help. ann On 2/26/07, karen wreden <kmwgen@earthlink.net> wrote: > > Ann, > I have a 1980 or older map, that I have been locating the cem. with and > updating directions. Ann, I have a 1980 or older map, that I have been locating the cem. with and updating directions. The problem is that some small family plots I cannot find, are destroyed, are in the middle of private property, or are so overgrown they are impossible to walk. The Sussex Cty Sheriff's Ofc is using a crew to clear some of these cems. - a good program - maybe not for the clearers as some are overgrown with poison ivy. The map and the unknowns are the hold up at the moment. I am glad to hear someone is working on a list for Andover Pres. I will look into that. Thanks for the info. I have a copy of the First Presb. /Succasunna Cem Burial List, that is in the Roxbury library. I was doing a lot of research there and it saved me much travel time. Between Jan http://raub-and-more.com/resources.html & I http://www.sussexcountyhistory.org/pascal/cemidx.html and "Find A Grave" www.findagrave.com I think most of the cemeteries are transcribed for Sussex & Warren Counties. I just added Mount Salem and the should have "Old Newton Burial Ground" up this week. Obits from the Wantage Recorder, Sussex, NJ dated Friday 17 Nov 1922 Mrs. Martha A. NYCE Widow of Col. John NYCE, died at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John BROWN, in Caldwell, Kansas, Nov. 3rd, at an advanced age. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.William G. Karen, I spoke to the woman at the Andover Presby Church Cem and she looked up my man but no luck; she did however, say that there was someone coming and is in the process of entering all her cards into a computer program and then they would be available to be posted. I do not live up there, as I am in Fl. Perhaps someone from the Hist. Soc might check with them if it isn't the HS doing the project.(that was in Oct 06.) Someone found my Green Coursen Cook's mother in law at Stanhope but not the daughter. I have an Idea that that's where I will find him although she died in 1892 and he died in 1898. I did talk to the secretary at the Presby church in Stanhope and the caretaker at the cemetery next door to the church with no luck. Thanks for the tip about getting all the names of thoes in the plot. Never thought of that. I will try to contact that Succasunna Presby church and see if I can speek to someone who has that info. Thanks. Karen for your time. Ann On 2/26/07, karen wreden <kmwgen@earthlink.net> wrote: > > The closest cemetery is Andover Presbyterian Church Cem. I have the Warren Cty one. Could you give me an idea where someone who died in Andover and his wife was from Succasanna where he may be buried. I have checked Andover. ( think they were Presby. but not sure. Father and brother in Yellow Frame.) Was directed by phone to Byram. Haven't had any luck contacting any one yet. Thought may call the Roxbury Library and ask for a look up. Maybe they are as nice as the ref.people in Warren Co. I have the map on the wall in my office and keep wondering where they could be. Listing of cemeteries and ploting them on a map would be very helpful. That could be an idea for a front double page of your pamplet. The Sussex Cty Gen Soc is putting such a list and pamphlet together. I gave them most of the information. Cems, location, mail address, phone number, Local Historical Soc./address. Also list of filed maps of cemeteries that are in the Cty Clerks Office. I have the rough draft. I don't know when this will be finalized in print. I know Warren Cty has such a listing. I don't know about Morris Cty. When I get to the library in Morristown, I will inquire. Does someone know if Morris Cty has a list? The closest cemetery is Andover Presbyterian Church Cem. I would try writing to them first. - Lake Lenape Road, Andover, NJ 07821 (I have phone # also, if needed) This is one of the few Sussex Cty Cem. that does not have a inscription list on file anywhere in Sussex Cty and few names are listed on findagrave.com The Historical Society of Andover Borough may be of help - PO Box 325, Andover, NJ 07821 Stanhope Union Cemetery at the end of Sussex Cty. - 67 New Jersey Avenue, Lake Hopatcong, NJ 07849 . This Cem has a large inscription list up to 1974 and is on findagrave. However, the stone can be missed, or there was no stone when the list was made. Also ask any cem. for names of everyone in that plot; and plot and section number. (help person taking photos) Not everyone is listed on the gravestone, I found. I also found that there are names on gravestones that are not listed in the cem. records. You can request a photo of gravestone thru findagrave, when you find the location/cem. If you do find any name on findagrave, posted by someone else - they will usually correct info and add maiden names. You can post additional info in the "flower and note" section. Parents, spouse, etc. I don't think many people know this feature. The King family has more than a page in the burial records of First Pres. Church Cem. of Succasunna (Roxbury Twp), yours are not listed. I have more than 12 death certs of people supposed to be buried here. They are not on the burial record list nor listed on the burial card that I have a copy for each family plot. So the records have gaps in the information, I have found. Ann (and others), Just in case anyone is interested, here's that Warren County list of cemeteries, compiled by John O'Brien: http://www.wcchc.org/cemetery.htm I don't know if you got an answer to your question about Sullivan County, but it's in the Catskills, not far from the Minisink area of NJ/PA/NY. Hi, the first place to look is at www.findagrave.com . However, some of the old small cems are not listed. Sussex County is. There is no mail address listed, and many do not have a map. The next place is the county or local Historical Soc or Gen Soc. There is a book of cem address, that has most cems listed, if your local library has it. There is also a web site that lists the address, I found by accident when looking for an old "Hillside Cem" in Sullivan Cty NY. It was not listed on the site. I think I started with www.interment.net . Sussex Register newspaper, Sussex, NJ dated Thursday 15 Dec 1904 "Borough of Stanhope" - column With the death of Caroline SMITH, which occurred on Weds. Dec. 7th, Stanhope lost its oldest resident. Mrs. SMITH was the widow of Amos SMITH, and since his death 13 years ago, has lived at her home on Main st. She passed away in the fullness of years, being ninety-five and over. Mrs. SMITH was a good woman in every respect, and will be missed as much in this community, where she had lived for over sixty years. Her maiden name was WOODRUFF, and after her marriage came from her home in Flanders to reside here. Amos SMITH, her husband, kept the Stanhope house and hsd Daniel WEBSTER as a guest over night when the distinguished orator spoke at a meeting in Stanhope, during the Presidential campaign of 1840. She is survived by three daughters, Carolline, wife of George T. KNIGHT, Mrs. Harriet ROSE and Miss Helen SMITH. Funeral services were helf Saturday afternoon at her late residence, conducted by Rev. C. W. DEMING, pastor of the M. E. church of which the deceased was a member. The death of Mrs. Amos SMITH leaves George NIPER as the oldest resident of Stanhope borough. He is in his ninety-third year. Amos CHAMBERLAIN, of whom we wrote last week, as being critically ill, died Monday evening, Dec. 5th, in the 59th year of his age. He was an energenic farmer, and for about nineteen years had occupied the Rockland Dairy farm, which he improved to great extent. He lost his wife and daughter nearly four years ago, and remarried aboutr a year since. He was a member and staunch supporter of the Stanhope Presbyterian church. His widow, a son, and three daughters survive him. The children are Silas and Mrs. Everitt APPLEGATE, of Netcong: Miss Retta, of Liberty, NY and Miss Kittle, at home. Hope this helps, Cathy DiPietro Cathy DiPietro cathode@earthlink.net
