Cathy and all, I was at the state archives once and overhead a conversation between a researcher and an archives employee about early land deeds. The researcher was asking about still other types of land records. I remember hearing that there were some other land records. It has been a long time since I heard all this, but the phrase "colonial conveyances" comes to mind and may be the right term for certain other land records. If anybody else finds out more about types of land records for New Jersey, I would be interested in hearing about them, too. >From the Sussex Independent of Friday, March 16, 1923 Mrs. Lillian Curtiss. Mrs. Lillian Curtiss, sixty-six years old, widow of D. Mason Curtiss, formerly of Waseca, Minn., died last Friday morning at Linn Hospital, where she had been a patient since September 17 last, when she was stricken with paralysis. A few years ago Mrs. Curtiss left her home in Waseca and came to Sussex to live with and care for her aunt, Miss Fannie Everett, of Clove avenue. It was in the Everett home that she was stricken. Mrs. Curtiss was a daughter of William Everett and Almira C. Hatch and was born in Minnesota. When Mrs. Curtiss was about eight years old the Everett home was raided by the Indians. Her mother and little brother were slain. Her father escaped and three years later succeeded in rescuing his daughter from an Indian camp. The surviving relatives are two half-brothers, Edward L. and Guy E. [middle initial could be E or F, but another obit for her gives E] Everett, of Waseca, Minn. Funeral services, in charge of Rev. W. A. George and Rev. H. M. Herbert, were held Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. M. E. Elston, in Clove Avenue. The body was shipped Tuesday to Waseca for further services and interment. Kirsten Saxe I found this obit in the same papers as ones for my ggguncle and thought it was too interesting not to share. -- Open WebMail Project (http://openwebmail.org)
Hi Folks, There was still a lot of contention, border fighting, map redrawing and general mayhem in this time period. East and West Jersey lines were still being debated. Claims to lands in the new Sussex county were filed in East Jersey at Perth Amboy AND in West Jersey in Burlington. Later deeds in the Sussex County Clerk's office most often outline all the previous deeds, quit claims, etc. when the property changes hands again in the post 1785 period. Often you will find counter filings in both Perth Amboy and Burlington for the same land in Sussex. These usually resulted in court cases and evictions. Check for some of your ancestors involved in such disputes at http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/supremedb.html Happy Hunting, Cathy DiPietro, list admi
I'm no expert, but the state archives does have earlier land records. There are at least two earlier types of land records. If other listers do not answer all of your questions, you may be able to learn more by browsing the archives' online catalog and by calling them. The staff there are extremely helpful. To all those who replied to my email. Thank you! I can find loyalist lists for most people who came to Canada. However, what I am looking for is a list of the clergy of the New Jersey Volunteers. If there is such a thing! Does anyone know if such lists were kept.? I am looking for a George Jacob Bowman or Jacob Georg Bauman who was supposed to be a preacher to the King's troops. I see in Sussex County that there is a gap in the records between the formation of the county from Morris in 1753 and the beginning of generally available deed records in 1785 (LDS holdings). Are they held by the state archives or are there lost records or am I simply misreading the situation? Nancy: Do not rush to judgment on these people. Action in the heat of passion, no matter what kind, just cannot be undone. Who really knows, but the Almighty, or Whoever you hold dear, Knows the limit to which man or woman can stretch. We all have our saturation points. To each their own, and how they deal with stressors. Also none of us really know what kind of home life that Mr. and Mrs. SMITH had in the privacy of their four walls. Is anyone researching a Smith line that includes my gggrandmother? Is anyone researching a Smith line that includes my ggggrandmother? Her name was Margaret Smith, she probably was born between 1795 and 1800 and she married my ggggrandfather Ziba Nichols around 1815, probably in Morris County. Ziba appears on the Jefferson Township tax ratables in 1817 and 1818, then moves to Sussex County around 1820. Margaret and Ziba lived in Hardyston Township, then outside Sparta and she died Dec. 16, 1843. Debbie Bleger Researching Nichols and Smith
As to the Smith family, I would like to know about Sarah Smith and her husband John Parse, where they were married and who were their ancestors and where from. The couple may have lived in Sussex Co., and also were registered in a baptist church near Amity, Orange Co., NY. Their oldest son was born ca. 1767. They had 10-11 children, so perhaps Sarah Smith was born in the early 1740s. Thank you for any information. S. Hi Folks, I found these items at the library today from the Stanhope Eagle newspaper. This was a weekly paper, published on Wednesdays. The microfilms are at the main branch of the Sussex County Library in Frankford. The paper seems to originate in 1881 but the libraries microfilms start in June of 1885. There is an article in 1885 about a card game at the Thomas SMITH house in Stanhope. He was partnered with his wife playing against his son Lodi SMITH and friend. Thomas lost the two games out of three and became furious, blaming his wife. Finally, Thomas attacked his wife and was on the verge of killing her when Lodi intervened. The fight between the two escalated into Lodi retreiving a firearm and shooting his father three times until dead. Weds. 15 April 1886 Matilda SMITH, daughter of Nathan of between Waterloo and Andover, aged about 18 years and of good character and reputation was found strangled and robbed near the institute on Friday (April 9th) morning. She was buried at Hackettstown. Successive articles outlined the trial of the suspect, a fund set up for expenses called "Tillie's Fund", that the trial was held in Belvidere and used 100 witnesses until finally the culprit was sentenced to hang until dead a year later. 24 Oct 1886 - At Stanhope, by the Rev. I'm not sure where I got the Flanigan. It could have come from a reseacher. Another possibility is that I found something in a census that I thought matched them up. I think your source is more reliable. It might have been because of the area they were all living in. Anna Flanagan was about the right age, her parents were both born ion Ireland, etc. It sure wouldn't be the first time (or the last) that I have been wrong. I do see that Anna Bracken meets the same criteria. This would make her the dau/o Cornelius Bracken and wife Ann of Ireland. Descendants of Cornelius Bracken Generation No. 1 1. CORNELIUS1 BRACKEN was born Abt. 1822 in Ireland (living in Ogdensburg in 1860 - 1880), and died Bef. 1900. He married ANN. She was born Abt. May 1830 in Ireland (living in Sparta in 1900). Hi Nancy, I know I am late responding to this note, but I wanted to say thanks for your helpful outline on the Brackens. I did recently trace the Bracken family and came up with the same names and ages you did. I did not find a NJ marriage record of any sort for Nicholas Berrigan and Anna [Bracken or Flanagan]. Where did you find the last name of Flanagan? One other helpful piece of evidence showing that Anna's maiden name really was Bracken was in her obit. I just double checked and it says she is survived by "a brother, Cornelius Bracken of Jersey City." Thanks very much for helping to put some more puzzle pieces together! Now if anyone knows any more about the Berrigans, I would love to hear from you! William Berrigan fought in the Civil War and his wife is buried at Old Immaculate Conception Church in Franklin. There are books on who got land grants from the King. I found two such books. I'm sorry I can't tell you the names of the books because I forgot to write them down. NJ State Library at Trenton had one I just picked up off the shelf and started looking through. When I went back, I couldn't find it again. Both the PA State Archives & the David Library for the American Revolutionary War showed me a book similar it as well. The David Library for the American Revolutionary War has all kinds of good things before, during, and after the war that could be helpful to both the Loyalist & the Continental soldiers. I've been told by people that work there that Canada has a lot of information on the Loyalists in Toronto, Ontario, and also another library in New Brunswick, Canada. The David Library for the American Revolutionary War has a good website. There is a James REEDER listed on the 1793 Tax list for Sussex Co., NJ. No township is listed for him but Warren Co. would have been included on this list. I have an estimated birth year for the James that married Elizabeth Jane Snover as circa 1795 so this can't be him - perhaps his father. This is the only REEDER listed in 1793. They might be on lists by Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc. Also I believe, Sussex Co. or one of them, it has a section about Quakers, you might investigate there. Maybe others might be more helpful. cw <BR><BR><BR>**************************************<BR> AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.
