Just Curious? Is SICKLES just another name of Van SICKLE/SICKLES/SICKLEN? Someone wrote me an email a long time ago and said there was just one either Van SICKLE/SICKLE/SICKLES who is the progenitor of all in the USA. I have notes of an Abraham VAN SICKLE B: 1778 who married Sarah MILLS B: 1778, dau of Colonel James MILLS and Sarah REED. Abraham was a loyalist, and they removed up to Canada. The MILLS family removed from Sussex Co. NJ over to Northwest Territory when it was opened for settlement. Then removed to Darke Co. Ohio, where they lived and died and are buried. Not sure if any of the Van SICKLE/SICKLES/SICKLEN/SICKLER dropped the "VAN" at later dates. cw

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. There were a number of marriage announcements in the October 1, 1942 issue of the Sussex Independent. 3 of those appear in full on a photocopy that I have and are transcribed below: Sussex Independent, Thursday, October 1, 1942 Roof- Eliason - Miss Elsie Eliason, daughter of Mrs. Jennie Eliason, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was married September 19 to Augustus S. Roof, of Stillwater, in Stillwater Presbyterian Church, by Rev. F. Schell. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, Albert Straus. The bridesmaid was Miss Jennie Nelson, of Stillwater, and the best man was Robert Lantz, of Stillwater, now in the Army. The couple will reside in Stillwater. Sussex Independent, Thursday, October 1, 1942 Kymshym - Spears - Newton - Miss Norma Spears, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howand Spears, of Port Jervis, was married last Friday to Peter Kymshym, of Long Island, N. Y. The ceremony was performed by Recorder Charles L. VanNess in the town rooms in Spring Street. Witnesses were Miss Shirley Hunter, of Matamoras, Pa., and George H. Winslow, of Camp S-51, Branchville. Sussex Independent, Thursday, October 1, 1942 Green - Smith - Sparta - Miss Naomi Smith, daughter of Mrs. Laura Smith, and Frank Green, of the Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Green, were married Saturday evening by Rev. E. S. Ford. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Edma Schaff. Mr. Green left October 1 for Richmond, Va. There were at least four other marriages in the paper, but my copy only shows the right-hand edge of each of 4 of those. As a result, even the names of the brides and grooms are not certain. One marriage is probably for a Shirley E. _____ to a Grover G. Smith. Another is for a groom with the last name ending in mble (perhaps a Kimble) and another for a groom with last name Hare or ending with Hare. Kirsten -- Open WebMail Project (http://openwebmail.org)
I show him to be the son of George R. SICKLES and Anna Maria KISHPAUGH. George R. is the son of Jacob SICKLES and Elizabeth SMITH. This is the same family you have seen recent posts on. I do not show parents for Anna Maria KISHPAUGH. Perhaps someone else on the list has that. He was ill but a short time, pneumonia developing at the last. Mr. Bentley was born January 5th, 1884 at Paterson, N. J. on April 10th, 1910 he married Miss Hazel Whyms. He was educated at Blair Hall and Princeton, being a member of the class of 1907. After leaving Princeton he became connected with his father, Thomas W. When the Sussex Print Works, of Newton, was organized he became Treasurer and Manager of that company, which position he held until the time of the merger of the Fabrics Finishing Corporation, shortly after which he retired, taking up residence at Sparta. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton and for a number of years had charge of the Presbyterian boys basketball team. He was a member of the Shawnee Country Club, the Lake Mohawk Country Club, and the Manhattan Club, of New York City. Also of the Elks Club, of Newton. He was a prime baseball player. As Organizer, Member and first President of the Newton Rotary Club, he gave liberally of his time, energy and ability to every movement for the betterment of Rotary activities in this County. Under his courageous and energetic leadership as first President there was laid a foundation of good fellowship and friendship which has always been a strong incentive for the members of this Club to emulate. Because of his loyalty, devotion and friendliness this Club has profited greatly and is deeply indebted to his memory and inspiration. This resolution is presented at this time as an expression of the affection which the members of the Newton Rotary Club felt of Herbert Bentley, and desire that the record be spread upon the minutes, and deep regret and sympathy be extended to his family in the loss they have sustained. Source NY Times Obit entry #2 Page 18 July 28 1931 ProQuest Historical Newspapers Electronic Archive retrival. June 2006 Herbert Bentley and family are expecting to leave their beautiful home on Main and Halsted streets and become residents of East Orange, where Mr. Bentley's business interests call him. Bert Bentley, as we all take delight in calling him, is a thoroughbred Newton boy. When a youngster he took delight in winning prizes for fast swimming at Hopatcong lake as a member of the Presbyterian Sunday School. Then he scored high as a good baseball player, and when Bert was at the bat at a crucial stage in the game, everybody felt sure that the home team was to be a winner, and then he married a daughter of conductor Frank Whyms, easily one of Newton's best known and most esteemed citizens. Bert the son, is a student of Blair Academy while Patricia, the daughter of ten summers or thereabouts, is noted among Newton's fairest young misses. To lose such a charming family circle is a loss that Newton deeply recognizes. 1900 US Federal Census Enumerated June 19,1900 New Jersey / Sussex Co. / Newton town / Sheet 6 Ward 1 / Sup dist 3 / Enum dist 171 / James E.
