    3. William Sickles - I show his wife to be Catherine E. Shafer (marriage book A) and I show that she died between 1900 and 1905. William was still living in 1905 (Sparta) so Hattie Ellen must be a second wife. In 1910 he is indexed as Sickler but he is still a widower and his dau, Ella M. is living with him. That only leaves three years for him to remarry and he's aged 90 here. I have no burial location. I have accounted for 8 of the children: Descendants of William Sickles 1 William Sickles b: December 1819 in NJ (Residing in Sparta in 1860 - 1900) d: August 19, 1913 in Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ Source (3): "History of the 1st Baptist Ch of Wantage" by G.F. 1. Re: [NJSUSSEX] Trails and roads
    2. That was one really helpful answer and the writer is much appreciated by this kid who would probably not have made the best frontiers woman. I guess we always adjust to whatever we have to learn, but this sounds like a great deal of time, money, sweat and tears before they could comfortably travel. I am wanting to writing about some of my Grandmothers who were truly gutsy women, and this makes the one who traveled w/ her only son in front of her on horseback, alone, from MD to OH in about 1817 according to the son's age when it was mentioned in a history book many years later. I don't know how many places there were along the way for a lone woman to stop or how often she might have had to protect herself, but to start out to see her children whom she had already sent to OH w/ an older sister while she stayed home to nurse her sick husband, had to take nerve. When I read this item, I was even more convinced that she was a lady of resolve. If she wanted to do something, it got done. I am happy to report that she lived to a ripe old age in the home of a granddaughter where I found her in a Census. It must be in the genes because the whole line of women appear to have been ones who figured out a way for something to be done, no matter what the obstacles. Thanks again for the background. 1. Re: [NJSUSSEX] Alexander Decker / TINSMAN
    2. I am unable to assist you with the parents of Alexander Decker (Sr), however, I do have information about his son if this will help you. Alexander Decker (Jr) married Rachel Tinsman, the daughter of William Tinsman and Elizabeth Green. I have been researching the TINSMAN line for many years. Alexander Decker Jr was born Nov 30, 1811 and died Nov 13, 1896. Both he and Rachel are buried at Fairview Cemetery. Hopefully, this is the family that you are looking for. 3. Maybe in the end it will turn out that you missed the obit because the accidental death made the front page or some other place away from the other obits. I was looking for one and knew the date of death and that it was in the paper, because I had an old copy of it at home. I still didn't find it because although I did try to look at the front page of the paper, I mistakenly recalled that the obit seemed to be on the right hand side of the paper instead of the left. 3. Several years ago my husband and myself visited Plymouth, Mass and travelled there by car. At the time I marveled at how difficult it must've been for our ancestors to have gotten from point A to B. My own folks left Paulinskil in N.J. and walked to the Niagara area of Canada, taking 12 weeks to get there. Your description of the early roads/trails certainly explains a LOT about just how difficult travelling really was. Thanx. ----- Original Message ----- From: <GailRVW@aol.com> To: <njsussex@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2007 2:42 AM Subject: [NJSUSSEX] Trails and roads > In American Colonial times most trails used for movement followed the > pre-existing Native American paths and for the most part those were along the > mountain tops and ridges above the valley floors [think Appalachian Trail].
