    3. I have seen a couple of cases where births were apparently reported in the wrong year. If the child was born around the spring or summer, this might happen. In one case a child was born on May 31, supposedly the last day to go on that year's return. He had actually been born a year earlier, and it hadn't been reported on the earlier return. At least that 's the conclusion I came to when I saw his death certificate with his age in years, months, and days. Another birth was reported twice, in consecutive years. The name and the birthday were the same, and I think I concluded that the child must have been born on the earlier date. Of course it's not impossible that there were 2 children born a year apart, with the first one most likely having died before the 2nd was born, resulting in his being given the same name. 3. Ann, These are from the the original copies of the Birth Returns for Hardyston in the time period mentioned. I copied them from mircofilms I got thru the LDS Church. The handwriting in not good and often there are discrepancy. For instance, in birth returns that say "from the first day of May 1850 - the first day of April 1851" you might see a birth that says "Apr 1850" - but you know it was actually 1851 because of the time period covered. There may also be discrpancies with the month of birth. As I said, the writing is so bad it's possible to make a mistake. The ( )'s indicate that I was giving it my best guess. When reviewing these records, two people may see different things. Always, with all the records I transcribe, everyone needs to be reminded that they cannot be considered "proof" but merely a roadmap. Does any one have any other information about him--cause of death, etc.? He never married. Charity Alferetta McKAIN was daughter of Alexander C McKAIN and his second wife, Jane CRABTREE. Charity died 19 January 1893 in Andover. Her mother's will was to leave everything to Charity but she died before her mother. Does anyone have additional information about her? She never married either. Apparently there are no deaath records in Trenton for either Charity McKAIN or Benjamin C. CRABTREE. Are there obituaries in any of the Sussex County newspapers? 3. I have three obits and the very top of a fourth from the Thursday, June 11, 1936 issue of the Sussex Independent: Eugene R. MCMICKLE Eugene R. MCMICKLE, sixty-three, train dispatcher on the Erie Railroad, died suddenly Friday night at his home in Rutherford of a heart attack. He was taken ill at the home of his son in Lyndhurst and two hours later expired at his own home. He was born at Quarryville a son of Silas MCMICKLE and the late Katherine J. ROLLISON MCMICKLE. He started with the Erie Railroad at the age of fourteen and for several years has been a train dispatcher. He was twice married, his first wife being the late Estella PAULISON, of Butler. Besides his father, who resides with Mr. and Mrs. Martin JONES, near Sussex, he leaves his second wife, Mrs. Maud RUFF MCMICKLE, and two sons by his first union, Eugene R. Interment was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Paterson. Isaiah BUNN Isaiah BUNN, formerly of the North Church section, died last Thursday at Warwick Hospital after a few days illness of pneumonia. Surviving relatives are a son, Howard, of Warwick, and a daughter, Minnie, wife of Archibald HARE, of Warwick. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Lazaer Funeral Home, Warwick, with the Rev. Tabor Knox officiating. Burial was in North Church Cemetery, where members of Samaritan Lodge were pallbearers. Note: for Mrs. Dillistin's obit below, I have assumed that WEBB and HORTON may be surnames, but I really don't know. Mrs. Frank C. DILLISTIN Mrs. Jennie E. DILLISTIN, wife of Frank C. DILLISTIN, operator of the mail route between Middletown and Sussex, died last Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William J. SMITH, on the Middletown-Otisville state road. 3. This is in answer to a query on the Sussex Co. list, but am also posting to Morris Co. because that is where the families lived (Port Morris and other parts of Roxbury Twp.) From "The Stanhope Eagle", Feb. 28, 1894 "Three Killed in Seventeen Hours" [The first two paragraphs/deaths were blurred to the point of illegibilty on my microfilm copy] "The third accident was at Hoboken the next day. George Gilson, who took the late John O'Neal's position, was so terribly mangled that his remains could not be exhibited at the funeral. He was eighteen years of age, and always had such an inclination to follow railroading that his parents gave their permission about a year ago. Owing to sickness of one workman in the Hoboken yard, the train on which he worked had to slow up, instead of flying the cars into the yard, and it is supposed that young Gilson misunderstood the signal. He was last seen alive putting on a brake. The next seen of him was by J. J. Jones of another train, who jumped on the engine of Gilson's train and said a man was being cut to pieces. Several cars passed over him. His remains were shipped here and he was buried on Saturday at Union cemetery. Rev. J. A. Sutton preached the funeral sermon in the Methodist church." The parents of George Gilson were Mary Catherine "Kitty" SICKLES and Warren GILSON. In the 1870 census, Warren GILSON was a boarder in the home of Mary C.'s parents, Jacob and Elizabeth SICKLES. Another child of Warren and Mary C. GILSON was daughter, Olieva. She married Hawley Chase WEAN, son of Wesley WEAN and Elizabeth BLACK, on March 10, 1905; married by Rev. Stoddard, of the Succasunna Presbyterian Church. Their children were Carold (a son, and I'm told this is the correct spelling), Warren, Virginia and Dorothy.

    3. Pat, This is another Sickles/Cooper marriage. Sarah Emiline was born in 1852 same year as Elias Sickels (on your pg 2). It seems there is another Jacob Sickles in the area . I found the Cooper family of (Robert B & Son Alfred) in Tranquility Cem. Sarah Emiline Sickles Cooper cem. is in Johnsonburg, NJ. On raub and more web page, the Methodist /Episcopal Church Cem lists two sons of Dawson(son of Zackariah& Sarah E.) and Maggie Cooper. A family plot there? Sarah E. is not listed. I posted some of my odd bits and pieces that maybe someone can connect them to their Sickles/Sickel group, and it may help them. Before I posted my origninal George Sickles inquirey, I had all this stuff I could not connect. Too many George and Jacob Sickles. With your help (and others) I was able to place most of what I found. George Sickles Sr and Anna M. Kishpaugh had four children (per 1900 Census Andover) I only have George Jr. and cannot find the other 3 children names. This Sickels/Sickles family is confusing to sort out. 3. The LDS Library does have a lot of films of DAR materials from NJ listed in its catalog. I think that one entry in the catalog has over 200 such films on it. Films with Warren County Cemeteries may or may not list the individual cemeteries, but it might be worth taking a look at the list. I think I first stumbled on that particular catalog entry by searching for NJ vital records. I hope you can find a helpful transcription. The DAR library also has its catalog online. Checking that might help, and if you don't find anything definite, you can always try calling them. 1. Re: [NJSUSSEX] List of all Sussex (and Warren) Co. Cemeteries
    2. John O'Brien's compilation cited by Jan, "A Listing of all Known Warren County Cemeteries," within the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission web site, states that in addition to the Wiggins burial mentioned by Jan there was an unnamed abandoned cemetery in Vienna, with "Inscription records" at Snell's _History of Sussex And Warren Counties, New Jersey_ (1881), p. 739. This _History_ states that "there is no trace left" of this cemetery. Oh, well . . . Judy

    2. Jan most kindly pointed to >>John O'Brien's list of Warren cemeteries at http://www.wcchc.org/cemetery.htm<< I certainly have missed seeing this. Thank you very much, and thank you also for your wonderful web site. Vienna is certainly the right location for the Wiggins cemetery I was thinking of. Cheers, Judy

Can anyone explain what Colonie Van de Heer Neder Horst is or means? Or is the word "Horst" part of it - it's in the same size type. Translations would be interesting. I must admit I am only assuming the marriage took place in MD, as that is where George took the oath of Loyalty. It is possible that they married in Sussex Co., and moved to Maryland later, before taking the oath of Loyalty. If anyone has any information on either the McCaslins or the LaPortes, I would greatly appreciate it. thank you Marilyn Current ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 22:50:57 EDT From: MonaMusic@aol.com Subject: [NJSUSSEX] GIVEANS To: NJSUSSEX-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <cf0.c747ff0.333f2691@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" William H GIVEANS, son of John GIVEANS (4th) and Mary Edsall STORMS, was born July 1872 in Deckertown, Sussex Co., NJ.
