As always Rootsweb does not charge to belong to any lists; but they do welcome and encourage contributions. Rootsweb indicates that only 9% of the people that use Rootsweb actually contribute anything. If anyone would like to take over ownership of this list or any other surname list that I own; or any other surname list ; let me know. I will see if it is available for adoption. There are many mailing lists that are available for adoption at Rootsweb. They have a few kind people that take care of many many lists until other volunteers can adopt the lists and look after them. To see if a list is adoptable go to this URL: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/adoptable/ Adoptable means that it exists but is waiting for a listowner. It also means that there are most likely "few" people on the list as there is no one to "publicize" its existence on lists in areas where that surname lived. Diane Ward Sives

    3. Hello Irvina, I happy to see that you enjoyed the images. I can tell you that there are at least 2000 individual pieces of paper and I can truly say that I have not posted every name to RootsWeb. I started to place messages there every time I had a pretty good size list of new names and after 10 or so postings I was asked not to. As a matter of fact the very last posting was deleted by the moderator/list owner. I think the owner considers the postings "Spam" even though I am not selling any of the papers and I'm not sure why. I have sent messages via the NJSUSSEX-L@rootsweb.com and she has not had a problem with that. I do appreciate the offer to help but think it's one of those unfortunate things that doesn't allow us to. If you go to my home page I started a "Surname" list which I added some of the names. Thanks again for the offer to help, it was very thoughtful of you. ---Mark (ps. 3. Hi Audrey, I found two listings under Bowne in the Sussex Warren history by Snell pg. 13 In Sept., 1692, Andrew Hamilton , who had been appointed Governor, arrived in Jersey, " and was received in a manner that removed every impediment to the re-establishment of the proprietary government" He appointed John Barclay , receiver ands surveyor-general, and Thomas Gordon resident secretary. on the 14th of the month he selected as his council Capt. Isaac Kingsland, Capt. Andrew BOWNE, John Indians, Raritan River, of Roycefield, Samuel Dennis, John Bishop, and Lewis Morris. page 111 During the battle of the wilderness and in turning Lee's right wing in the advance on Richmond the regiment did excellent service, and maintained its reputation for daring hardihood and brilliant exploits. In an engagement on the 28th of May, 1864, the ammunition of the men gave out while they were hardly pressed by the enemy. A new supply was brought from the rear, and Capt. Beckman was shot through both hands as he stretched them forth in the act of distributing ammunition to the men. Lieut Bellis was almost at the same moment mortally wounded, as was also Lieut, Stewart. Capt. Robbins was wounded severely in the shoulder, Lieut Shaw badly in the head, Lieut Wynkoop fearfully in the foot. Liuet BOWNE was the only officer of the First Battalion on the field who was untouched, and he had several narrow escapes. I also found a bio on Cyrus A.Bowne in Orange County, ny ( Orange is on the border of New Jersey) It said he was born March 16, 1857, He had a farm in Montgomery NY ( Orange County). he was know as a fine grade maker of butter through out the State. He was the youngest member of a family of 9 brothers and sisters, his parents being Cyrus H.(born in Dutchess County, NY) and Hester (Wood) Bowne. There is more on Cyrus and Family, if you think it is a connection , I will print the rest. yours in genealogy, Joanne

    2. Kevin Jacobson
    3. Hi list, I'm sorry to post this question here, but I couldn't find a Roots mailing list that seemed appropriate and I'm hoping someone else has run into this problem. I've requested Civil War pension records from NARA for three ancestors. I received notice from NARA that two of them are XC files and in posession of the Veterans Administration. I was directed to contact my regional VA office, in Buffalo, to "gain access to them". A couple questions. What are XC files and why wouldn't NARA have them? There don't seem to be any obvious differences in the veterans, like death dates, immigrant/citizen, residence state, etc., between the one file NARA has and the two it doesn't. But I guess my main question is, am I going to have trouble getting them from the VA? I've tried calling Buffalo, but no one knows what I'm talking about. I sent a letter a few weeks ago to the address NARA provided, but no response yet. I've checked VA websites, but can't find any reference to old pension records. Any suggestions? Thanks, Kevin jake9999@msn.com

    1. Re: [NJSUSSEX-L] Pension Records
    2. Marleen Van Horne
    3. Kevin, Something similar happened to me four year ago, I sent for my great-grandfather's Civil War pension records. The Archives told me to contact the Veteran's Administration, I did, the VA told me to contact the archives. This went on for 20 months. Finally I called the Regional Director of the VA and had the records in two months. It was worth it I got the entire file, and it was a good two inches thick. What XC means, I think is that your ancestor lived into the 20th Century and collected his pension until his death. Any pensioner who died before 1900, their records are in the custody of the Archives, after that they are the custody of the VA, even if the records are physically in the Archives. It took me two years to recover from the experience, before I tried to get the Civil War pension records for another great-grandfather. In June of 1998, I made the request. The application was immediately returned to me requesting the service number and social security number for my ancestor. Well I don't think he had a service number, and he died 30 years before social security was invented. I call the VA and reached someone who promised to help me. This happened several times, no one ever contacted me. My ancestor's name is in the data base, but they have no other information, so they can not tell if it is the same person. The only way they can make the determination is to have the file sent to California and look at it. After a year of that nonsense passed, I contacted my Congresswomen. I requested both my great-grandfather's file and my father's file. Last fall, I received a notice that the congresswoman's office had received my father's medals. I had not asked for the medals, now my government has given me over $200.00 worth of medals--nice, but no cigar. Another year has passed since the second request, I still have not seen either pension file and I have had no communication from the VA, the Archives or my Congresswoman. I am going to try the Congresswoman again, and I once again have the telephone number of the director of the VA, maybe that will work again. Basically, the problem is this. Under the freedom of information act we are entitled to the information. Congress really does not want us to have it, so they offered early retirement to the people at the archives and all but two people in this section left, then they did not appropriate money to replace the retirees. So we may be entitled to it, but they have seen to it we can not get it. That's my story, honest. Marleen Van Horne
