Anyone have any info on the Canin family,circa-1800-1850,in Sussex Co.? Thank you, Gert
Looking for Ann or Anna Cole, born aprox. 1786. Ann married Richard DeRemer on 3/24/1805, at Old Greenwhich Presbyterian Church. She was from Sussex County (the area is now Warren County), Richard was from Hunterdon county. At least one of their children was baptized at Mansfield-Woodhouse, I think. Possibly, they moved to New York [Ithaca area?], and last they lived in northeast PA. Their 10 children were born 1805-1825. Her second husband was a Case; she died in 1856, in PA. She is possibly related to a Benjamin Cole, who had a grist mill in Newark (?) or Benjamin who is listed with Mansfield-Woodhouse Church. I don't know what happened to Richard DeREMER. I have no record of him in PA; but he must have been there. I have unconfirmed reports that he died 1831 or 1834, and that he was a Captain in the War of 1812. -Michelle DeRemer

Nancy, I have received references to the ADAM and MARY SNOOK listed below. I believe this may be the ADAM I am looking for. My Rev. War ancestor, Capt. CONRAD GONTTERMAN from Sussex Co. gave permission for a MARY CONTERMAN to marry ADAM SNOOK in 1768 in Sussex Co.. I have a feeling this could have been his sister. If so, this could have been a later in life marriage, which the grown children of ADAM could indicate. As far as the SIMMONS connections....there are many. The more I discover, the more "tangled" the web becomes! CONRAD's wife was MAREY SIMMONS, daughter of JOHN SIMEONS/SIMMONS (born Germany) and MARY WHITTAKER. MAREY was also the sister of your JOHN who married ELIZABETH (some say ELIZABETH's maiden name was TITMAN, but that is disputable). MAREY also had brothers PHILLIP who married ANN, and PETER who married LAVINA. There is an ANN SIMMONS in the old Stillwater Cemetery who died 4/1/1838, aged 94 years. MAREY died before 1807 and left children, MARY, who married ISAAC STICKLES, WILLIAM, who married a cousin, MARY SIMMONS (sister to JOHN SIMMONS III who married 1. ___________UPTEGROVE) JOHN, who married ABIGAIL NORTHRUP, (d/o BEN & LENORA WHITEHEAD NORTHRUP) HENRY, who married BARBARA GONTERMAN, d/o HENRY and CATHARINE COSS GONTERMAN. (This latter HENRY was a brother? to CONRAD MARGARET, who married WILLIAM VAN NO(L)TE PETER, who married MARY/POLLY CHRISTY (d/o JOHN and ELIZ. LARUE CHRISTY). WILLIAM is my ancestor. As mentioned above, his first wife was MARY SIMMONS, sister of the JOHN III you mention in your e-mail. MARY died as did her brother JOHN. But before JOHN died, he married after ____UPTEGROVE, 2. MARY KISHPAUGH. When JOHN died, MARY KISHPAUGH SIMMONS married WILLIAM GONTERMAN/GUNTERMAN, above, and they had children MARTHA, SAMUEL and JOHN SIMMONS GUNTERMAN. WILLIAM's wife MARY also had the following brothers and sisters besides JOHN III (1777-1824): PHILLIP, (1782-1868) married 1. LAVINA __, 2. 1813, SUSAN STRUBLE SARAH (1783-1858) married 4/12/1802 DAVID HOPKINS PETER, (1784-1805) married MARGARET LYDIA married 1796 JOHN B. KNOFF SUSAN (1792-1871) married CONRAD STRUBLE ELIZABETH, married PETER SNOOK BARBARA, married 1799, SAMUEL PRICE (he died in 1802) CATHERINE, married 1812 IRA BURRELL The original JOHN SIMEONs may have had brothers PHILLIP, PETER, and SAMUEL, for in 1766 (Deed Book, Vol. C, pg. 387 staes that the above persons (including JOHN) purchased 301 plus acres from JACOB DODDER in Sussex Co., NJ. Another reference states that these SIMMONS' settled near Marksboro, now in Warren Co., NJ. Later, around 1772, SAMUEL, JOHN and PETER SIMMONS bought land in LaFayette, Sussex Co., NJ, situated between Hopkins Corners and Monroe Corners. >From "LaFayette Township, New Jersey" by Everitt and McCann, pg. 2: "HENRY BAIL/BALE (who married CONRAD GONTTERMAN's sister, ELIZABETH) came here in 1750"....."BAIL was a German, as were most of the families who settled in the LaFayette area at the same time. Their names were SIMMONS, SNOOK, SNYDER, STRUBLE, STRADER, SPACE, COUSE, CALTS, MAINES, LANTZ, and others. Many of these people were related or had been neighbors back in Germany." I have more SNOOK information, such as: CASPER SNOOK was born about 1740, died Dec. 1817. His wife was ELIZABETH_________. It is believed that CASPER settled in Sussex Co., NJ about 1760. He purchased land in what is now LaFayette, 12/30/1800. He left a Will. (#A-452, Hall of Records, Sussex Co., NJ) Children were: MATTHIS, b. 1770 (married 1. ANN DIVERS, 2. CATHARINE) JOHN, b. 1772 SUFFIAH (Sophia) b. 1774 (married JACOB BALE) RODEY (Rhoda) b. 1775 (never married) WILLIAM C., b. 1777 (married MARY CUMMINS) HENRY, b. 1779 (married ESTHER SEELY) SUSAN, b. 1780 (married REUBEN HARDIN) ***A CASPARUS SCHNUCH, bapt. 1740 in Rhinebeck Flats Reformed Church, in Rhinebeck, NY was a child of JOHANNES and JULIANA KLEE/KLIE SCHNUCH, who married in 1733 in the German Palatinate (Nordhofen Churchbook) PETER SNOOK was born 1744 in Germany. He served in the Revolution and died in Beaver Springs, Union Co., PA His wife was MARIA COSS/GOSS. Children were: PETER, b. 1777 in NJ and married MARY ABER, CASPER, b. 1781 and married ESTHER GILLIAN, JOHN, KEZIAH, KATHERINE who married ANTOINE SCRATHER, MARY who married PHILIP LASH, ANNA BARBARA, MARGARET who married MICHAEL ONSTED, and a second JOHN, b. 1770, son of PETER and second wife KETURAH LASH (from Alan Jones) http://members.tripod.com/~alanjones/Biographys/Snooks.htm You are really GOOD if you can follow this! Hi Lisa! My tree has WOODBURN on a maternal branch. I haven't ruled out Warren Co. for their early years in NJ, but I haven't found them on a census there either. So far they have been in Stanhope, Sussex Co., NJ with an occasional siting over the borderline in Morris Co. But since the Morris Canal and RR routes would have given them easy access to Warren-Sussex-Morris, I am checking for other researchers in all three counties. I have found records (1920) for them living in Stanhope, Sussex Co., NJ, and my g-grandfather stated that he was born in "Dodge Mine, NJ" on his DL&W RR application, (which was morphed into "Ford Mine, NJ" on his death certificate -- "I know it was one of those auto companies!"). I don't know which County this was in. (My g-g-grandparents) John WOODBURN b. in England abt. 1843 and d. murdered near Stanhope in 11 March 1921. He married Sarah Elizabeth DICKERSON b. (Overheiser) Bronson, is a cousin of Rear Admiral Bronson, of Rhode Island. -------------------------------------- Samuel S. Vandruff was educated at Sussex and Mendham, N.J. After finishing school, he helped his father who was engaged in farming. At the death of his father, Mr. Vandruff continued the cultivation of the lands until his interests were drawn elsewhere. He became associated with John Loomis, serving as assistant post master and clerk. Finding clerkship to his liking he was engaged as such for a period of twenty-one years, when he formed a merchandise company under the name of Couse and Vandruff. Some time later, Mr. Vandruff received an offer which he accepted with the Pennsylvania, Poughkeepsie and Boston Railroad Company, and is still connected with its successor, the Lehigh and New England, where he has been for forty-one years. He was at one time superintendent of the New Jersey division. He was appointed a State Board of Health officer, which position he held for twenty-six years. I recently acquired a copy of Scannell's New Jersey's First Citizens and State Guide, Vol 5, 1925, and I thought I would share with the list the entries I find that relate to Sussex County. To assuage anyone's concerns about copyright issues, I relay this information printed on the back of the cover page, below the copyright information: "By giving credit therefor to 'Scannell's New Jersey's First Citizens and State Guide,' newspapers and other presses are given permission to use any of the information contained in this work." To the extent that the copyright owners could not have anticipated the internet, I believe that this list would qualify as one of the "other presses." One note- I have kept in the spelling as it appears (except for my own typos, though I tried to be careful)... some of it may not be correct- for example, the river is now known as Paulin's Kill or Paulinskill (or even the Paulinskill River, which is a little redundant). I am not sure how many entries will prove to have Sussex links, but I estimate it at a dozen or more. I'll try to type them in as soon as I can! ------------- ANNA MAY EMMANS- Paterson--Housewife. Born Oct. 2, 1868, at Swartswood Lake, N.J., daughter of James and Harriet Ayers (Marsh) Emmans; married June 21, 1917 to Joseph Roy Emmans. --------- Joseph R. Emmans, born February 5, 1857, was raised by his grandfather at Pulan's Kill, near Fredon, N.J., where he received his education attending the Pond's School. He entered Starkey Seminary, N.Y., in his early twenties and upon graduation migrated to the West as far as the State of Minnesota, where he remained for a year or more before returning to the East. He married near Fredon, Sussex County, N.J. to Marion Roy, who was born December 26, 1854, near Fredon on a large farm. She was the daughter of WIlliam and Tabathy (Hunt) Roy. Shortly after his marriage he engaged in the timber business at Middleville, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, and in the course of a few years settled in Paterson in the fence building business. He then entered the excavating business and subsequently engaged in Real Estate. Mrs. Emmans died in Paterson on April 14, 1916. He again married in 1917 to Anna May Emmans. He died December 17, 1919. In politics Mr. Emmans was a Republican and an ardent member of the Lakeview Presbyterian Church. Abraham Emmans, grandfather of Mrs. Emmans, was born August 13, 1804. He married Clarissa Turner, born August 29, 1802. His son, James Emmans, father of Mrs. Emmans, was a farmer in Sussex County. He was born December 22, 1825, at Cloves, near Deckertown, N.J., and resided therein his younger days. He was one fo nine children, the others being: (1) Hannah, July 30, 1828. (2) Thompson, July 31, 1829. (3) Rebecca, November 27, 1833. (4) Anna, July 13, 1835. (5) Jane, December 14, 1838. (6) Harmon Lane, July 13, 1840. (7) Meribah L., December 20, 1842. (8) Dorcas, Sept. 29, 1845. James Emmans married Harriet Ayres Marsh, January 19, 1854. She was the daughter of John and Mary (Corsen) Marsh, of Swartswood, N.J. They had children: (1) George Mortimer Emmans, born January 13, 1855, a florist of Newton, N.J. He married Hanna Struble, of Myrtle Grove, N.J. She was the daughter of Leonard and Jane Struble. (2) John M., born March 14, 1856, died November 14, 1882, at Omaha, Nebraska. (3) James, born March 12, 1860, and died May 8, 1922. (4) Frank Alton, born June 29, 1863, now resides at Sanger, California, on a large fruit ranch. He is engaged in orange and grape raising. (5) Anna May, October 2, 1868. Mr. Marsh was a farmer owning the adjoining farm of James Emmans, near Swartswood Lake, who owned two and one half miles of the Swartswood Lake shore of the big Swartswood Lake property, and five acres on the Little Swartswood Lake and the Pond Brooks which connects the two lakes. To maintain private ownership of his water front property until such time as he could be in a position to donate it to the state for public use, Mr. Emmans was forced to endure many unpleasant experiences, causing Mr. Emmans a great deal of litigation. This unpleasant condition lasted even after his death, and finally, after more litigation, the lake was made a state possession, by George Mortimer Emmans, son of James Emmans, and was opened to the public by the deeding of the park known as Emman's Grove Park. James Emmans died November 27, 1904. Mrs. Emmans died October 14, 1900. The following article is a reprint from the N.J. Herald, April 26, 1915. The deed conveying a gift of twelve and one-half acres of land on the east shore of Swartswood Lake to the State of New Jersey was filed yesterday in the County Clerk's Office. The gift, which includes Emman's Grove, the scene of many annual picnics, was made by George Emmans, of Clinton Street. The consideration in the deed is given as "$1, and other valuable considerations, and an intent that the people may have the use of the premises herein conveyed as a public park forever." Mr. Emmans and his wife reserve the right to provife entertainment to the public on these premises, such as letting boats for rowing on the lake, which was purchased about a year ago by the State Forestry Commission, and providing food for man and beast. It is agreed in the deed that no intoxicating liquors can be sold in the park and that Mr. and Mrs. Emmans at any time may remove any buildings that they may see fit to erect within the park for entertaining the public. The donor requests that the State Park be known at "Emmans' Grove Park." Mr. and Mrs. Emmans agreed not to assign, sell or convey the entertaining privilege. It is directed that the State Board of Conservation and Development or its successors have the care, supervision and management of the park. -------------- Anna May Emmans, descendant of a family who have taken an important part in the history of New Jersey, attended the Pond school until she was sixteen years of age, when she supplemented her education by studying at home. Mrs. Emmans has never interested herself in public life, being a believer that a woman's place is at home. In politics she is an independent voter. Religiously attends the Christian Church. She is an associate life member of the New Jersey Genealogical and Biographical Society, Inc.
