    3. Pam, I have been searching for my parents of my Henry WALTER (ca. 1810) in Sussex Co. for over 5 years and can not find them either. Recently I decided to look in Orange Co. NY to see if they were on the other side of the line when the states were divided. So far have found nothing there but have not had time to do much searching. Just an idea - you might want to try. The Dunnings I was searching for just disappeared. So I did what has been successful before......I widened my search and sure enough, I found them in Sussex County, NJ. From reading the messages posted to this list for the last month or so, I see that others also ignored that border between Sussex and Orange. That's not to say that they might be in Orange, but perhaps you should look in neighboring counties and/or states. Good luck. Kathy McConnell DeFoster Kailua, Hawaii

    2. Why is it that people and records in Sussex Co. just can't be found? Was there a fire or flood at one time that destroyed them? How can my Moore family just not show up...when you know they were there - from what is stated to be a known fact from the family? My 3rd great grandfather had to have been in Sussex Co. in 1825 (at the age of 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old) and his brother John E. Moore was born in 1825 in Deckerton, Sussex Co. For at least 30 years there have been those in our family whom have all tried to find something...anything, but yet nothing ever...brick wall after brick wall. One even went to Sussex to try and ended up in Trenton looking, but nothing found. Can anyone suggest something else to try or an idea of what next? I really would like to know who the parents of my 3rd great grandfather Cyrus C. Moore was, but my tree ends there and will forever remain until I find a fact or a name. My only other thought is to track each and every Moore family that lived in Sussex Co. at that time and rule each one out one by one...which takes a lot of time, especially with such a common last name. Our local library has a copy of the 1820 Sussex Co. Census, however it is so bad you can hardly see it. The couple of Moore's I found don't seem to fit. I don't know what else to try and could sure use some idea's from everyone that is hunting around in Sussex Co. ....Perhaps you all can help me with a fresh approach or a different idea to try?? 3. Hi Listers: Over the last year and a half I have transcribed the federal census for Sussex County, 1850 for inclusion in the Rootsweb archives on the CART program. All of the data is in my computer and 4 townships are installed on the internet. Two other townships are in the process of being proofread. The rules call for a party other than the transcriber to do the proofreading. I am anxious to finish this project so that I can make some changes in my computer. Hence, I am writing to ask if anyone would care to help with this very worthwhile effort by proofreading a township or two. There are 7 townships yet to be done. In order to do this, a volunteer must have access to the Sussex County, 1850 census microfilm and a film reader. I would send the volunteer a printout of the transcription and a stamped return envelope. The proofreader is to compare the printout to the actual census film and indicate omissions, errors, typos, mispelled names--any changes that will make the transcription more accurately comply with the actual film. When the corrections are returned to me, I will make the corrections to the data and forward the corrected copy for inclusion in the internet file. The volunteer will be credited in the census heading for the proofreading. Should you care to volunteer and have a preference with regard to a township, those townships remaining are: Vernon Lafayette Hardiston Sparta Wantage Frankford I would be very appreciative of any help that can be offered for, as I indicated previously, I am quite anxious to get this job out of the way. 3. Cynthia, Thomas Chambers, Lord of the Manor (King of the castle) is the guy I was referring to, no he didn't have any kids of his own but his step-kids took his name, he even stipulated that in his will. I don't know why he's referred to as Surgeon but that's what the very first page says in R.R.Hoes Like I said before I have no idea if this is the same family as in NJ, PA & OH w/ my John Courtright, I just thought it was interesting. I'm really trying to figure out who John was travelling w/, there were no other Courtrights, so it had to be his wife's family or cousins. Cindy

    2. Cindy, Would you kindly tell me where you found "Toomes Chambers, Surgeon" in the Kingston Church Records"? I can find a "Toomes (Thomas) Swartwout" as a wit. in 1662 for his Gson Antoni but no "Toomes Chambers, Surgeon" anywhere. There was a "Thomas Chambers" in Ulster Co. during this time period who was also seen as "Thomas the Clabbort" (for his use of wooden clapboards to finish the exterior of houses) and "Toomes" as a bp. witness. This Thomas was "Lord of the Manor of Fox Hall" in Ulster Co., NY but he never left Kingston. He also had no children. As early as 1662 I find reference to a "Toomes Chambers, Surgeon" in the Kingston Church Records, but of course I have no idea if they are the same family that went to Sussex Co., NJ & then on to PA w/ my John Cortright. Also I asked abt the name VAIL, well I had completely forgotten abt the early VIELE family. I'm related to them through another line but don't have naything but the earliest record of them. Cornelis Volkertsen Viele married Maria Du Trieux c1639. The de Trieux/Truax family did migrate to NJ>PA>OH, so I'm sure the Vieles did too. I have 1 VAIL: Mary Vail married to John Schoonmaker b. 1830 Ulster co., NY I think. cindy

    3. In following my John from NJ to PA to OH, I've found the above surnames . Jefferson/Harrison Co., OH was full of Chambers. A Jacob Van Garden is on the early Beaver Co., PA tax lists w/ my mysterious John Courtright. John named his first son Jacob V. & the name was very common in the line. Also VAIL & MILO are very common names in the family & they seem unusual. Anyone run across these folks or know anything abt these names? 2. The New Jersey Calendar of Wills 1814-1817 lists a will for Peter Van Neste of Sandyston, Sussex Co. dated June 20, 1809 and proved June 11, 1816. He lists children George, Peter, Isaac, Mary and Judith. He also leaves a bequest to the children of his deceased son, John: Peter, John, Mary and Judith. Does anyone have more information on this family? There was a John Van Ness and a Peter Van Ness in Trumbell Co. Ohio - Peter md. to Susan MADISON/MATTESON is there in 1830 and John, married to Hannah HALL comes about 1831. Are these two brothers? Could they be the sons of Peter's deceased son John? (I have more information on these two families if anyone needs that information). Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks. Karen Krajda@aol.com

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Rollinson/Harrington of Deckertown
    2. Greetings, According to an IGI file on the FamilySearch website, a Matthew James Harrington was born in 1829 in Deckertown, Sussex County to John Harrington and his wife Jemima Rollinson. Other files suggest Jemima is a daughter of Henry Rolison and Mary Van Sikle. I suspect that John and Jemima may be the parents of 'my' GG grandfather Benjamin Harrington (1828-1890)who seems to have appeared 'out of thin air' in the Lebanon/Tewksbury TWP areas of Hunterdon County around 1850. I know from a trancript of Benjamin's death record that his father was a John Harrington and there was also a 70 year old John Harrington living in Lebanon TWP according to the 1870 census. Census index records also show both a John and a Benjamin Harrington in Passaic County during the early 19th century. Any information on these folks would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Rick Novak

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Obit. - Mary C. DAVENPORT
    2. >From the Wantage Recorder, Friday, January 14, 1921: Mary C. DAVENPORT died on Wednesday last in Morrisville, NY from scarlet fever, aged 22 years and 22 days. She was attending school at the place taking a course in Domestic Science. Her mother was with her when she died. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. DAVENPORT of Wantage township, a graduate of Sussex High School class of 1919. Four brothers and three siters besides her parents survive her. There are Floyd, Fred and Ford, in the West and Frank at home; Mrs. Pearl SNOOK of Papakating; Jennie at Montclair State Noraml School; and Ethel who is attending High School in Sussex Borough. She was a young lady of a bright and happy disposition, universally esteemed by all her acquaintances, and her death is a sad blow to her family and friends. The funeral was held at the house on Saturday. Rev. Lines of Westtown officiating, interment in Fairview cemetery, near Sussex. Her associates in Sussex High School testified their friendship by sending a floral tribute to her memory. The Madison County Leader said January 7th: Miss "Mollie" (Mary) C. DAVENPORT, of the State School of Agriculture, student whose serious illness from scarlet fever was mentioned in these columns in previous issues of The Leader, died at Helyar Hall Wednesday. The body will be taken to the home of her parents at Unionville, Orange County, this morning for burial. This was her second year at the NYSSA. She was a bright and promising student and universally popular among her associates. Her untimely death has cast a gloom over the school's faculty and student body, who together with our townspeople generally, will extend very sincere sympathy to the membrs of her family in their sore bereavement. Mis DAVENPORT, who was a member of the Presbyterian Church is survived by besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. DAVENPORT, three sisters and four brothers. One of her brothers, Floyd DAVENPORT, graduated from the State School eight years ago. The death of this promising young daughter adds a second affliction to her family, the brother referred to having recently lost one of his hands in a corn husking machine on a large farm in Illinois, where he held a responsible position. If you connect with this family, I would like you to make contact with me. Mona Bross Hylton, INdiana

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Swayze Address Part 7 - Chief Expenses
    2. Catherine Di Pietro
    3. The seventh installment (paragraph) of the Sesqui-Centennial Address of Sussex County given by Justice Francis J. Swayze on 2 Sep 1903 and printed by the Sussex Independent newspaper.... " THE CHIEF EXPENSES OF THE COUNTY The chief expenses of the county during the first years of its existence were for the fees of the Freeholders, some of whom had to travel more than forthy miles to reach the county seat, and for bounties paid for wolves and panthers. The bounties continued to be paid as late as 1834. Roads, of course, did not exist in the early day, with the exception of the Old Mine Road, from the mines at Pahaquarry to Espohus, of which I have already spoken. INDIAN TRAILS There were Indian trails through the woods, following in all probability the course of the streams. Perhaps the most important was what was known as the Minisink Path; running from Elizabethtown on tidewater, to the Minisink country, along the Delaware. I find references, also in an old return under the date of 1751. to the Indian Path from the Drowned Lands to Pompton. When the settlements increased sufficiently to make roads necessary, the method of working them was forced labor, substantially as roads have always been made and worked in primitive communities. Overseers of the highway were chosen in each township and precinct; they were required to serve under penalty of fine; they were obliged by law at least once in two months to view and inspect all the highways, roads, bridges and causeways within their district and whenever they should perceive any of them decaying or wanting reparation, they were required to call together the inhabitants, who were bound to attend or send a hand above the age of sixteen and under sixty years, before the sun should be two hours high in the morning, with proper tools, and to continue work until sunset, with an hour allowed for dinner." Sort of the other way around now a days..... Cathy DiPietro listowner NJSussex-L
