Many thanks to people who have helped in this work especially Diane Ward Sives for finding the Bible Records. Pat Wardell and Ree Hopper for all the work they have done. The William Courter file is sitting with the Ackerman file but can not be approved unless a Bible or a church record is found to link William and Aaron Courter. I am looking for anyone that may have information to the surnames of Hurd, Beauman, or Bennett families in Sussex Co. NJ. I am told that Amos Hurd died in 1956 and is buried in Tranquility, NJ, and that the courthouse in Sussex Co. has information on him. Also that he lived in the towns of Newton, Hackettstown, Great Meadows and Andover area's. His fathers name was Joseph Jehu Hurd. Amos was 1st married to an Eva Beauman. They had 6 children. I am told that Eva remarried several times after him, once to a Bennett. If anyone can help me with these names or info it would be appreciated. Amos would be my husband's grandfather. Until 3 days ago he never knew about this family. He was seperated from his mother at a young age, and we just recently found 1 relative that led us to all. Guess the family does not speak of their past much, and so we will have to get as much as we can by records. Thanks. Pam

Portrait and Bio Record of Orange County,NYpublished 1895 page 645 Lawrence W. Kortright a reliable and Successful business man of Mechanicstown, was born in the town of Goshen and is the son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Brown) Kortright, also natives of this county. His father and he were born on the same farm. The former, when a young man learned the trade of a carpenter, and for many years was extensively engaged at that occupation, meeting with good success in it's prosecution. He died in 1867, at an advanced age, having lived an honest, upright life, and left to his descendants an untarnished name. His wife died some time prior to his demise. The subject of this sketch was born November 28, 1826. In youth he had such advantages as the schools of the early part of the century afforded, which were quite meager in comparison with those of the present day. At the age of twenty-five he left the shelter of the parentalo roof and began for himself in the world. Beginning as a farmer, he was successfully engaged in that occupation until 1859, when he came to Mechanicstown and embarked in the grocery business. After one year, he began butchering, and has since carried on an extensive business in that line, selling meats at retail in the village and surrounding country. As a business man he is reliable, honest in his dealings, and prompt in meeting his engagements, so that he has gained the confidence of his customers. April 28, 1855, Mr. Kortright married Miss Harriet , daughter of Thomas and Martha (Seely) Eaton, all native of this county. They are the parents of two sons and one daughter, namely; William T. who married Miss Lillian Carr, of Sussex County,N.J. and lives in Mechanicstown; Martha E. at home; and Frederick L. who is in Ithaca, N.Y., where he is engaged as a professor in Cornell University. He married Miss Flora M. Corwin, of Middletown,N.Y. Mr.and Mrs. Kortright are members of the Congregational Church at Middletown, and generous contributors to religious enterprises. While a Democrat in politics, he has neveraccepted any offices save a few minor positions, but has been content to take a quiet part in public affairs. hope this is helpful your in genealogy Joanne ----- Original Message ----- From: Cindy Torres Owens <cindyo@va.prestige.net> To: <NJSUSSEX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 5:12 PM Subject: [NJSUSSEX-L] 1775 Orange Co., NY Tax assessment > In this tax list I find Aaron Cortrach along w/ numerous VAILs: Benjamin, > Daniel, Isaiah, Jon & Samuel. > > District No. 1 comprised the "West Division" of Goshen, Golden Hill, > Carpenter's Corners and a tract along the present boundary of Hamptonburgh; > also the "East Division," a section east of Purgatory Swamp, and that part > of the present village of Goshen north of Church Street. > > This is also where in 1790 John & Jacob Courtright can be found. In this tax list I find Aaron Cortrach along w/ numerous VAILs: Benjamin, Daniel, Isaiah, Jon & Samuel. District No. 1 comprised the "West Division" of Goshen, Golden Hill, Carpenter's Corners and a tract along the present boundary of Hamptonburgh; also the "East Division," a section east of Purgatory Swamp, and that part of the present village of Goshen north of Church Street. This is also where in 1790 John & Jacob Courtright can be found. I have an incomplete listing for the family of Aaron: 1 Aaron Kortright b: 1710 d: 1789 . +Margaret DeLaMater b: Abt. 1712 d/o John DeLaMater . 2 Benjamin Kortright b: 1734 . 2 Ann Elizabeth Kortright b: Abt. 1745 ..... +Henry Sherman m: May 15, 1766 . 2 Eve Kortright b: 1752 ..... +Caspar Writer . 2 Susanna Kortright b: Abt. 1756 ..... +Christopher Springsteen m: Mar 23, 1777 Goshen, First Presbyterian Church, Orange Co., NY . 2 Lawrence Kortright b: 1758 d: 1843 ..... +Mary Cox b: 1760 d: 1835 . 2 Aaron Kortright b: Unknown ..... +Heyltie Van Garden . 2 John Kortright b: Unknown ..... +Jannetie Middaugh . 2 Rebecca Kortright b: Unknown ..... +Amasa Matthews What is interesting to me is the John Kortright, what happened to him? Found in the 1790 census: 1790 CARTRIGHT JACOB Orange County NY 146 00 00 00 00 00 1790 CARTRIGHT JACOB Orange County NY 421 Orange Town 1790 CORTRIGHT JOHN Orange County NY 371 Goshen 1790 CORTRIGHT JOHN Orange County NY 139 02 01 02 00 00 Does anyone know these people? Are they the same family? Cartright/Cartwright is another spelling of Cortright/etc. but it is also another completely different surname of English origin. There were many English Cartwrights in New England & North Carolina during this time period. Thanks, Cindy

Greetings List Members, I'm sending this notification to the members of the genealogy mailing lists I volunteer to manage for Rootsweb: Rootsweb has merged with MyFamily.Com aka Ancestry.Com. Here is an excerpt from the notification sent to listowners..... ------- Begin Rootsweb notice excerpt ----------------------------------------- Nothing will change for you, no one is going to charge you to use RootsWeb. You'll still find RootsWeb at www.RootsWeb.com. Everything you're used to using will still be here: the 19,000 mailing lists, the hundreds of millions of names in free genealogy databases, the interactive learning guides, the weekly RootsWeb Review and Missing Links, the numerous tools for tracing your family history, the tens of thousands of message boards, the thousands of independently authored web sites. RootsWeb will still support worthy genealogy projects and societies, such as the USGenWeb Project (www.USGenWeb.org), the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG.rootsweb.com) and the FreeBMD Project (FreeBMD.rootsweb.com), and other groups that provide free genealogical resources. And don't worry, you won't be charged to access RootsWeb. No one will put your data on CD without your permission. Our Privacy Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/pledge.html) and our Acceptable User Policy (http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html) are unchanged. Other promises made over the years will continue to be honored. You'll still deal with the same RootsWeb volunteers and employees. In fact, most users won't notice any changes, except exciting new tools, more content, and better genealogical resources. If you would like more information, please check out our official press release at http://www.ancestry.com/home/celebrate/rootsrelease.htm ------- end Rootsweb notice excerpt ------------------------------ My personal opinion on this is to proceed with caution. Please visit the web sites from their notification for more information. Do not panic. While they cannot "take" the email addresses from the list, they can start sending "cookies" to your computer on Rootsweb sites. They are those little bits of code which are written to your computer's cookie file so the advertiser can learn more about your Internet habits. Most every commercial site on the Internet already does this. Up until today, no Rootsweb site ever sent "cookies" but I suspect this will change very shortly. How to refuse/delete cookies using Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer: http://www.iwindow.com/warning.htm About Cookies and their use from ZDNet (asks for two cookies) http://home.zdnet.com/pcmag/features/cookie/cks1.htm By reading the above Rootsweb web sites - you can infer that you will also begin to see more Ancestry and MyFamily advertising on Rootsweb web pages. Nothing new there. I believe that the mailing lists will continue to operate as usual and that your participation and address will be safe while using them. Rootsweb policy specifically states this. Further, they guarantee that any data submitted to Rootsweb will be free from commercial use without your express permission. On caveat - FamilyTreeMaker offered their "free" genealogy web pages under the same premise and yet data from those pages has mysteriously appeared on FTM's various World Family Tree CD's. You decide. In the meantime, I will continue to manage these Rootsweb lists as they have always been run. I will keep you informed of any other changes which might affect you or these lists. PLEASE, limit the discussion of these changes or any questions you might have to private messages to me at vdpcom@warwick.net If there is a need, I will set up a separate list of sorts just for this discussion. I'd rather not clutter up the genealogy lists at this point - there are over 1,000 of you out there on these three lists. Carry on. Hello Everyone, I'm in the process of adding additional images to my home page of papers from Sussex County in the late 1800's for those of you who can use the info. First I want to thank Nancy for all the great "stuff" on her home page. I have a question abt the will of James Van Gorder filed in 1815. Who is the eldest daughter Hibele CORTRIGHT married to? I'm looking for ANY link between a Jacob Van Gorder & my John Courtright. Thanks, Cindy Cindy Torres Owens Stafford, VA cindyo@va.prestige.net http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html
Does anyone know if this is the same Jacob Van Gordon who married Catrina Kortright in 1753? His will is recorded in Delaware Twp., Northampton Co., PA. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/pa+index+400282055060+ F I've found a Jacob Van Gorder in Beaver Co., PA in 1800 w/ my John Courtright. Jacob was also in Sussex Co., NJ , so he's a likely traveling companion. In 1800 Jacob had 6 sons, 4 of them under 10, 2 10 & under 16, Jacob would be born abt 1755-1774. Anyone have any information on this family? Also there were always CHAMBERS around my John Courtright . In 1800 the following Chambers men were near my John in Beaver Co., PA: Chambers, James PA BEAVER CO. 188 1800 10010-4001000 Chambers, William PA BEAVER CO. 192 1800 30101-1001000 I believe these men could have also come w/ John from NJ. Any Chambers researchers? I have a copy of the Smithfield, Monroe Co., PA Reformed Dutch Church reords, so know abt those families. Am trying to tie them to the Sussex Co., NJ folks & esp. to my John Courtright. J. Kelsey Jones, I've been searching and searching the Walpack RDC for the bp. showing Johannes Snauber and wife, Anna Elis. Windemoedin, on 11 Sep 1746. The reason I could not find it is because the bp. did not occur in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ but rather across the Delaware River in the Machackemack RDC of Orange Co., NY. There were 2 more sponsors for this baptism; Jory Philip Wundenmuth, Maria Julianna Huber, his wife. The reason for 4 sponsors was that this was the baptism for twins, Maria Margreta and Maria Juliana, daughters of Johan Jory Windemuth and Johanna Margreta Elizabeth Bernhardin. The 25 Oct 1747 of little "Johannes" Windemuth with sponsors Johannes Merckel and Anna Elizabeth Snauber also took place in the NY Machackemack RDC, not Walpack NJ. The ONLY "Windemuth" baptisms I can find recorded in the Walpack RDC, Sussex Co., NJ are little Johan Christoffel on 27 Apr 1756 to Philip Windemuth and Maria Juliana Huber and little David Hunt Wintamute on 26 Jun 1825 to George Wintamute, Jr. and Magdalen Staley. Evidently the family did not stay entirely within one church? The records of Pfungstadt, Germany indicate that Johannes was a master miller. Their children were baptised in the Lutheran Church of Pfungstadt. The Snover family arrived at Philadelphia, 26 Sept 1737 on the ship, "Saint Andrew Galley." They resided at or near what is now Trappe, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. On 13 Oct 1742 Johannes was a sponsor for a child of Johann Georg Krassmann (Crossmann) baptised at the Agustus Lutheran Church at Trappe. The family removed to Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey, perhaps in company with her two brothers and their families.
