Johb HEATON was the son of BENJAMIN HEATON (1726-1790), who lived at Kingwood, Hunterdon County, NJ before coming to Hardwik, Sussex County. I understand that both Hardwick and Kingwood were Quaker communities, and suspect these Heatons were Quakers. Can anyone tell me if the Quakers would have kept family records, and how I could get access to them? Thanks. Can a location in the county be determined by having the name of the Justice of the Peace? I received a copy of the marriage of Henry Putman and Sarah Dunn in Sussex Co. in 1802. They were married by William Bearoslee. If this can't be accomplished, then is there anyone who will look for the record of land sale by Henry Putman in Sussex Co between 1807 and 1810? Any reply would be most appreciated. Janet >> Janet: Just a minor correction to the Justice of the Peace. I believe the surname should be spelled Beardslee not Bearoslee. I might be slightly off, but I believe he might have been in the area that is now the townships which are part of Warren County rather than in the current Sussex County part of the state. 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Westfall & Courtrights in OH
    2. Cindy Torres Owens
    3. It's the Westfalls, that's the connection! I've just been going through the 1850 census index, they are everywhere my Courtrights were, I don't know why I didn't notice that before but you know how it goes.... I've found some early Westfall mariages in Columbiana Co., OH when my John Courtight was there, they were also in Beaver Co., PA. I'm going to look through the 1850 Carroll Co., OH census today or tomorrow, they were there too. For those that didn't see my message yesterday : It seems that my COURTRIGHT family has some connection to Simon WESTFALL & Peter DECKER. In the 1850 Huron Co., OH census they are found together. I know that Simon Westfall & his wife Esther Brink had a daughter named Jane b. July 18, 1807 in the Minnisink RDC. There were many Decker's & Courtrights in this church at the same time, but as yet I can't connect my Courtrights to them. I know there were many intermarriages between these families over the years. I just can't dismiss this as a coincidence that they are all right next to each other. Jacob V. Courtwright (as I'm finding they spelled the name) was the oldest son of my elusive John. In the 1850 census his wife & children are listed as Margaret age 51 b. England, Lidia age 18, William 15 & Jacob 13, next door is John b. 1827 w/ wife Mary & daughters Eliza & Sarah , then next is Peter Decker w/ wife Jane & son James age 19 & daughter Cornelia 16, a 4 yr old male named Wellington Fernata !!! & then Simon 67 & Esther Westfall 60. Another curious thing is Jacob V.'s children are not listed in order, they are listed backwards : Jacob the youngest at 13 is listed, then 15 yo William & then Lidia. Also in the home are Jane Wellington age 15 & Anson Steel age 25, laborer. Could Jacob V. have had several wives & Jacob is the only son of Margaret's so is listed first? If anyone knows abt this or any of these folks I'm all ears. :>) Cindy ******************** Westfall OH Marriages: Naomi Westfall +Thomas Sergent m: Sep 16, 1813 Jefferson Co., OH (possibly the parents of May SERGENT who married William COURTRIGHT s/o John) Simon Westfall +Cassandra Shain m: May 15, 1823 Columbiana Co., OH Thomas Westfall+Prudence Caskey m: Oct 24, 1824 Columbiana Co., OH *************** Cindy Torres Owens cindyo@va.prestige.net http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Obit Reveals Hardships and Courage of Civil War Bride
    2. Catherine Di Pietro
    3. Greetings NJSussex researchers, Sussex Independent newspaper dated Friday 22 Nov 1918 Mrs. Daniel Bailey Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Bailey, wife of Captain Daniel Bailey, died at her home at Glenwood last Thursday of ailments incident to old age. Mrs. Bailey had been in poor health for some time and for the past two wee4ks was confined to her bed. Mrs. Bailey was born April 1, 1841, at Paterson, the daughter of Peter J. and Delia Ryerson Brown. Mrs. Bailey grew up on a neighboring farm to that which her husband had always lived, the farms settled by their respective great grandfathers. They were boy and girl sweethearts and their marriage was the termination of a romance. Before their marriage, while Captain Bailey lay seriously wounded on the fields of Virginia, the captain's mother and sweetheart made the perilous trip to the scene of the war where Daniel Bailey lay wounded in battle. The captain's widowed mother and Miss Brown, his intended, went in reponse to a telegram, which said that he had been given up by surgeons. Through the aid of friends in Washington they were able to reach the front. The two women took possession of an abandoned house, made up substitutes for furniture from Uncle Sam's barrels, boxes, and coffee sacks, found a native who had saved a cow and was glad to exchange milk for some Quartermaster's stores, and through many weeks they nursed Mr. Bailey back to life. February 25, 1863, the young couple were married and in the winter of 1864-5 Mrs Bailey was with her husband in Kentucky, the regiment being in garrison and having good quarters. It was here that news of Grant's final victory at Appomattox came to them. They were unable to reach home until September, 1865, and the homestead in Glenwood has been their residence ever since. Mrs. Bailey has long been a member of the Glenwood Baptist Church and the many acts of charity and good deeds performed during her long and useful life would fill a volume. She leaves surviving her, besides her husband, one son, Matthew G. Bailey, of Glenwood, and two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Reed, of Washingtonville, NY and Mrs. J. J. Van Order, of Caldwell. Funeral services were held at the home Thurs. afternoon at 1:30 and were conducted by Rev. James Bristow, of Warwick. Burial was in the family plot in the Glenwood Cemetery. Hope that was as interesting to you as it was to me. Happy Hunting, Cathy DiPietro listowner NJSussex-L
