    3. I'm finally figured out at least one link in my brick wall. The link between Abraham WESTFALL (1755-1829) to the Kittle/Westfall family of Randolph Co., (W)VA. & the COURTRIGHTs & CLARKS of Sussex Co., NJ. What I haven't proven yet is how my John Courtright fits in here. I believe he was either the s/o John Cortright & Susanna KITTLE. bap. 11/1/1780 or the s/o Samuel COURTRIGHT & Margaret WESTFALL . 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Obit. of Oscar DUNN, part two
    2. >From Sussex Independent, Friday December 16, 1898: "' Here are points that will indicate his mode of procedure and some of the facts that possibly account for his success. He never had but two notes in a bank in his life; never had a law suit in his life; did everything about his farm well and attended strictly to farming as a business; made all the money he ever made in farming and investing his money in farms and land; brought his farms up to a good state of cultivation by thorough working, liming and fertilizing; making every little thing on the farm count; doing many little things on a farm that most people do not consider worth the doing. Mr. Dunn let all his farms on the sharing system, and never had any trouble to secure good tenants. Some of the tenants have been on his farms for 21 years. All his bargains are on verbal agreements. He never had a written contact of any kind with his tenants.' All that was said in the above sketch of our friend was true until the time of his death, except that he had purchased several farms during his last years. Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife, a most estimable woman and one son, Thomas Jefferson Dunn. The funeral was held on Monday morning, and was very largely attended. The funeral was in charge of the pastors of the Unionville and Deckertown Baptist churches. Interment in the family plot at Unionville."

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Obit. - Oscar DUNN, part one
    2. >From Sussex Independent, Deckertown, NJ, Friday, December 16, 1898: "DEATH OF OSCAR DUNN He was Probably the Most Progressive Farmer in the County. Died Suddenly at his home at Quarryville Last Thursday evening after a brief Illness--His successful career as a Farmer and Citizen." (Photo of the late Oscar Dunn) "Oscar Dunn, probably the best known and most successful farmer in Sussex county, died suddenly at his home, near the village of Quarryville, about halfway between Deckertown and Unionville, at 8 o'clock on Thursday night of last week. His death was very unexpected both to his family and friends. On Saturday previous he attended the meeting of the County Board of Agriculture, in the Wallkill Assembly Rooms, over the INDEPENDENT office, and was in his usual good spirits, apparently as well as ever. On Sunday morning following he took the milk to the station, but on his return complained that he did not feel well. On Sunday evening a physician was sent for. He complained of pains all through him and of some stomach ailment. He kept in doors and his ailments succumbed apparently to remedies administered. He was dressed and about the house. About 8 o'clock he and his wife started up stairs to retire. He seemed in good cheer and joked with his wife. In about three minutes after retiring, he dropped off as if in sleep, never uttring a word. The following exact sketch of Mr. Dunn appered with portrait, in the INDEPENDNT of January 26, 1894. 'The ancestors of the Dunns, of Wantage, came originally from Bergen county, and settled in the neighborhood where Mr. Dunn now resides. The father of Oscar was Daniel Dunn, and at the time of his death owned the homestead where Oscar now lives. The latter was left his father's farm with the understanding that he pay the other heirs, three in number, an equal share in money to that he received, so that he estimates that his father gave him as his share in the estate just $1,000. But he did not receive this until long after he started in life on his own account. He earned his first money while working on a farm by the month. Mr. Dunn was 75 years old on his last birthday, which was on the 25th of April last. (This would have made the deceased 80 years of age last April.) He was married to Sarah Louise Elston, daughter of the late John Elston of Wantage township, in 1842, who is still his helpmate and enjoys good health. He commenced farming for himself near where he lives, on the homestead, on the first of April 1844. On starting out he made several resolutions to guide him in his future business course, which may be summarized briefly and are as follows: To make a study of farming in every detail, and know the business as thoroughly as it was in his power to acquire knowledge; to look after small details; practicing reasonable economy in all things; never buying anything he had no use for because it was cheap, pay cash for all purchases, and be temperate in all things. As a result of adhering to these foundation principles, he was enabled as time rolled on to first purchase the Asa Doty farm; next the Jesse V. Myers farm; next the farm of Benjamin DeWitt; next the Big Spring farm of Mrs. Rutherford; next the Alanson Dunn farm; then two farms at Pleasant Valley, and 350 acres of land in different parts of the county and is looking for another farm that will suit his fancy. In the meantime he has erected buildings and outbuildings upon these farms at a cost in many instances of as much as some of the Sussex farms would bring if put under the hammer today. It is a noted fact that when you see a farm owned by Oscar Dunn it is in a good state of cultivation. The buildings are all good and well painted, the fences good and the whole surroundings indicate prosperity.... To be continued.....

The rest have been posted at other times. Can someone post this email on the Sussex list. Linda can you post your family. Just guessing but the deeds listed here name the Old Place of Maurice Mourison. Maurice Mourison was supposedly the first person to purchase property in Morris County in 1702. That property history states was closer to the Montville/Caldwell Township line. This is just another thought about the old deeds and property descriptions. At times his property was described as being in Jefferson but his great grandson, Peter Courter, property is definately in Montville. 1719 Joseph Kirkbride of Bucks County, Pa and John Job of Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ sold 1250 acres of land to John Koarta. The lands were west of Pompton Plains eastward to the Bog Valley. This land adjoined the 1,000 acre tract on which present day Boonton lies. "Alex Fowler's book on Morris County houses, describes the tract as running from present day Montville toward present-day Lake Valhalla and east from there toward Changebridge Rd." This land was purchased by Kirkbride and Job from the West Jersey Proprietors in 1715. Here are the two new deeds: Deed Book N4, p 303 8 May 1848 Maurice Mowrison of Hardyston, Sussex, NJ to John Davenport of Jefferson, Morris, NJ for $64.26 land in Jefferson adjoining lands of Silas Allington and others beginning at rock which rock is the most SW corner of said lot being likewise the beginning conrer of tract of land containing 36 86/100 acres conveyed to Maurice and Aaron Mourison by Jacob Mourison by deed dated 30 June 1829 which tract the law described in the indenture is a part and running S87E3c90l N14E6c60l N32.30 W12c42l S8.45E16c to beginning containing 5 acres and 42/100 acres. 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] West Point Pleasant Cemetery

    3. Dear Sussex Co Friends~ I have a question I was hoping someone in Sussex Co will be able to answer or any one else for that matter. Where is West Point Pleasant Cemetery? Does it exist in Sussex Co NJ? I have a reference to Abstract Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, I am looking at. I am looking for the burial of my 5th Great grandfather, John Chamberlain b.abt 1759 who was said to have been present at the Battle of Brandywine(according to my records?). I have no Regiment to go on so I do not know if the three John Chamberlain's listed as buried in NJ were him or not at all. He married Elizabeth Canaan/Cannon/Kinnan: There is reference in this Abstract to a cemetery called West Point Pleasant, where two John Chamberlain's are buried. I did a Geological search of Pleasant point and found these two: Point Pleasant New Jersey Ocean County 40:04:59 N 074:04:07 W 16 08742 US Point Pleasant New Jersey Sussex County 40:55:22 N 074:39:29 W 920 US Which Cemetery is West Point Pleasant in then? What I do know is that this John Chamberlain's son, John Chamberlain Jr. shows up in Newton Sussex Co NJ by 1808 where he married Mary Little(in Sussex Co Records). He was also in the Sussex Co 1st Regiment, 1st Battalion, of Sussex Co in the War of 1812 . John was a Sergeant in the NJ Co commanded by William Dunn. He was drafted in the NJ militia at Walpack, Sussex Co, NJ on the 6th day of September 1814 for the term of three months and was discharged in Jersey City, NJ on the sixth Day of December in 1814. He was honorable discharged at Sandy Hook , NJ.(so I have 2 references of his discharge?).I have his widow Mary's declaration of Widows war Pension so I know this was my John Chamberlain Jr, and they later migrated to Rock Co WI, and John is buried near where I live in Walworth WI. What I don't know is which John Chamberlain was his father, the Revolutionary soldier and which state he was in when he enlisted in the Army.. I know it was the Patriots side.As he reportedly was captured at Brandywine. The World Chamberlain Society did not think my John was a member of the NJ Chamberlain's since I had my John b. 1759 ran away from Yale College to join the Military. I think at that time his family "may Have resided" in Amenia Dutchess Co NY. But somehow this John b. 1759 made his way to NJ during or after the war...My Chamberlain was a Teacher after the war, but his son John who was the soldier in 1812 was 1st Blacksmith of Hampton township in Sussex Co. Can someone help? Penny Kresl e-mail: kresl@elknet.net Penny's Genealogy: http://www.elknet.net/kresl/Penny/penny.html Delavan, WI.USA

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] STRANGE CASE OF APPENDICITIS
    2. Sussex Independent, Sept. 25, 1903: "From our Sparta Correspondent:" "A strange case of appendicitis occurred recently in this vicinity. A child of twelve years had a violent attack, and a day was appointed for an operation. For some reason the surgeon found it impossible to fill the appointment on the day set. The child grew worse and suffered intensely. In the meantime the appendix sloughed off from the colon, or intestine, was forced up into it, and passed off in one of the passages from the bowels. At last accounts the child was free from pain and was doing well, with every prospect of recovering."

For some time he had been connected with a company constructing telephone lines, leaving Monday and returning Saturday evening. Last Sunday morning, as Mrs. Lozier entered the hallway, she saw Mr. Young sitting in a chair, his head and shoulders inclined forward and wedged into a corner. By his side was his satchel. The coroner's decision was he died from strangulation. The deceased was about forty years of age and was a whole-souled, hard-working man. 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Obit. - Charles GRIGGS
    2. Sussex Independent, Nov. 10, 1905: "Expired Suddenly at His Farm Near Newton, Thursday Morning" "Was ill but a short time--his death a great shock to his many friends" "Charles Griggs, a well known and highly esteemed young farmer living near Newton, died of heart disease at his home near Newton this (Thursday) morning. The announcement was a great shock to his many firends throughout the county, from the fact that he was apparently in good health Wednesday, having called on a number of friends and relatives in Newton that day. He had worked about the farm during the day and was taken violently ill at 11 o'clock that night. Dr. Hood, of Newton, was immediately summoned, and every effort known to medical science was brought to bear in his case. He was in his forty-fifth year. The deceased was one of the most successful young farmers of Hampton township, and was widely and favorably known. He was prominently connected, being a grandson of the late Daniel Griggs and a nephew of ex-Governor John W. Griggs. His father was the late Henry J. Griggs, who lived on the farm where Charles died. Mr. Griggs had always followed the vocation of a farmer and had been successful. He is survived by a wife and four children, his wife being Margaret, daughter of Clinton Vass, of Tranquility, to whom he was married twelve years ago. He is also survived by one brother, Harry, of the Paterson National Bank, and one sister, Lillian E., wife of James Roof, of Newton. He recently purchased the Strader farm, which adjoins the one he occupied. Funeral services will be held at the Newton Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock."
