    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] ORG/ORA & HOCKENBURY
    2. Butch & Sher
    3. I have just found information on a MARY ORG/ORA who was the wife of a FREDERICK GUNDERMAN of Newton. They had a daughter, MARY, who married WILLIAM T. HOCKENBURY of Newton , June 11, 1842. MARY and WILLIAM moved to Michigan by 1860. I believe MARY HOCKENBURY also had brothers ED A., DANIEL, and a JOHN who married ELIZA DECKER and became a Baptist minister in Michigan after the Civil War. Has anyone out there been researching either of these names? Thanks, Sheryl GUNDERMAN Robinson

    3. Trying to establish a relationship between a Jonas DAVIS/DAVIDS in 1809 First moon Twp., Beaver Co., PA to the early DAVIDS family of Sussex Co., NJ. This Jonas sold land in 1809 to Zachariah FIGLEY. Zachariah was born 1761 to Jacob Figley & Beletje Davids & died 1853 in Beaver Co., PA. Beletje did have a brother named Jonas born in 1745, however I don't know if this is the same man. Beletje & Jonas' parents were Salomon Davids, Jr & Lea D. Decker. Lea married 2nd in 1757 to Jan Van Vliet. I've only found 2 children for them. Anyone researching that family? Back to the Davis family....Has anyone traced them out of NJ to PA/OH? My John COURTRIGHT who also came to PA from Sussex Co., NJ at the same time, had a daughter-in-law named Ann Elizabeth DAVIS. She was the d/o a Joseph Davis. She married Milo COURTRIGHT 1847 in Jefferson Co., OH. She was born 1827 in the same Co. in Steubenville. This town in on the Ohio River. Milo & Ann moved to CA during the gold rush. Any help w/ this family appreciated. Cindy Cindy Torres Owens cindyo@va.prestige.net http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html

    2. Joan & Wayne Wilton
    3. This is somewhat off the subject of twins and triplets/multiple baptisms and I just wanted to mention it as a sidebar. In the early days when travelling ministers might only complete his circuit once or twice a year, practacalities of the day sometimes dictated that engaged couples set up housekeeping before the marriage ceremony. When the minister arrived, there would be a 'group' wedding ceremony where several couples would officially tie the knot. Baptisms/Christenings would also be done. Joan Wilton

    3. I think baptisms were a community affair. Similar to family members bathing on the same day with one tub of water. Some questions to consider include... Did the church practice sprinkling or immersion? Were baptisms performed outside? Would the service be scheduled according to weather? farm work? flood levels? Would the service be delayed because of communicable illness in the community? What size area did the reverend serve? I searched for information on baptism history but couldn't find anything, maybe someone knows a source that could help. I only received this email for some reason have missed the rest of the conversation. Could someone forward other messages? Sharon Rhodes

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Multiple births or multiple baptism?
    2. Cindy Owens
    3. Thanks to all who responded. What great stories! However it brought up another question. We know not all multiple baptisms were of twins, triplets, etc. It's hard to tell when the birthdates are not listed. What is particularly puzzling to me is when a couple has 2 children bpatized just several months apart. I doubt they were twins or they would have been baptized together, but then you can't rule it out. Pat suggested this "They were all single children but the parents for whatever reason did not get around to getting them baptized as infants. It could have been because they were waiting for a traveling preacher or maybe waiting until the sponsers could all be there." This is a crucial theory in my hunt for John Courtright. It seems that family groups would all show up abt the same time to have their children baptized. Now it's possible that all the women gave birth at the same time, but not likely . So it seems to me that folks would wait for certian family members to all be together & then they'd all go to the church together for the baptisms. Sometimes they followed the naming patterns but sometimes that went out the window, seems to have depended more on who was the sponsor. And then we have the numerous baptisms w/ no sponsors listed. Does this mean there were no sponsors or were they just not listed? If a family group showed up I suppose they could all sponsor each other & maybe the Minister didn't feel the need to list them all? As most of you know I'm trying to make a case for John Cortright & Sussana Kittle's son Johannes bap. Nov. 1, 1780 to be my John , who would have been 3-5 years old. Anyone have any thoughts on all this? Thanks, Cindy

    3. Thank you Carol & Margaret. I thought that Jan was his grandfather or father but wasn't sure. I also noted that Jacob Van Etten & Antjen Westbrook were sponsors for the bap. of Antje Jan 14, 1753, the d/o Anthony VA & Annatje Decker. I'm still trying to sort out all these tangled connections. Still haven't found hard proof that my John Cortright is part of all this. Spent all afternoon looking at 3 rolls of microfilmed Sussex Co land deeds, only to find nothing of use in my search. I suspect that my John was the s/o either John Cortright & Susanna Kittle or his brother Samuel Cortright & Margaret Westfall. Cindy
