    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] More questions
    2. My Moore family came from Morristown NJ to Sussex County approximately at this same time....and I too cannot find a trace of them there.... My 3rd great grandfathers biography in the Andreas Book of Kansas states this, as well as the info on his brother John whom was born in Sussex Co., in 1825. What do you think happened that these people just don't show? Pam My WALTER family also migrated from Sussex Co. NJ first to Northampton Co. PA, then to Newton Twp., Luzern Co. PA. Henry apparently left NJ for PA about 1825 with his family. The curious part is that I can find no trace of him in NJ. Ken Walter

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Questions
    2. Would this include people who lived in PA already at the time getting land grants to move West to Kansas? Pam This is an easy one: about 1790 the federal government gave to the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary war grants of land in Pennsylvania, as well as options to buy more at a reduced price. Many members of my family moved there at this time, too. Judy

    3. THe LDS has on their site the birth of son John in 1785 to the above named couple. Numerous people have told me this couple did indeed have a son named John but no one has been able to give a date of birth or baptism. The source for this LDS submission is "Patron sheets, 1969-1991 Patron submitted forms ". I've seen a date as early as 1769 for this son. The 1785 date makes more sense & it would rule him out as a possible "suspect" in the "find-my-John contest. Since Margaret was the d/o Daniel Westfall & Samuel was the s/o Arien Cortright, I'm sure their sons Aaron & Daniel were the 2 oldest. There are no baptism records for these two sons, but naming patterns, baptismal witnesses & Samuel's will cofirm them. Daniel C. married Appolonia Westfall 10/27/1794, Aaron C. married Elizabeth Onstott 10/13/1805. The first child of Samuel & Margarets to appear in the baptismal records is on Nov 25, 1776 for Elizabeth. The next child of Samuel & Margaret's to appear in the baptismal records is for Lydia Nov 1, 1780. (Which I have to add is the same day that John Cortright, Samuel's brother, & Susanna Kittle had their son John baptised.). Later in the 1850 NJ census Lydias birthdate would be closer to 1775. We then have a huge gap, child Rheuben born Apr 23, 1790 & bap. Jul 25, 1790. Then another large gap, son Petrus born June 28, 1798 but whose baptism either did not occur or was not recorded until Oct 14, 1807. (Which again I have to add is the same day that my John Courtright & Mary Clark had their daughter Sara bap. who was born 8/16/1798). We know from Samuel's will of 1828 that he also had a daughter Ellen who married George Westfall. I don't know who he was or if they had children. I have no marriage record for them. The witnesses for his will were Sanford Clark, Nancy L. Van Deusen & JL Van Deusen. Who are they? I'm especially interested in Sanford Clark. He can't be the Sanford Clark who also left a will in 1827, naming father John, wife Sarah & children Nancy & Catherine. As always, any & all clues appreciated! I find that most of my families that left NJ for PA stayed very close and lived very near each other. They moved together (with cousins) to OH then on to IA. The family links were very strong and sib's named their children after each other (making things a bit confusing). However several distinctive names have helped a lot in tracing the families as they did finally begin to break off into different counties and states. 3. I have been searching for relatives of my ancestor Ephraim JONES who married in 1773 in Middlesex County to Phoebe HARNED (both of Woodbridge) There is a family tradition that Ephraim had a brother who was a loyalist and returned to England. I have not found any other information on Ephraim in New Jersey. The family moved to Northumberland County PA before 1778. I found a Lawrence Jones who filed papers with the Kings Treasury in England. He stated he was a merchant in Sussex County, New Jersey and provided intelligence to the British until he was caught and his property seized. He should have been in Sussex County 1771-1777. I looked on the Tax Lists on Nancy Pascal's webpage and found the only Jones names in 1773/4 a Lion Jones in Knowltown and Francis Jones in Newtown. I also found on Jan Reuther's page that Lion Jones was a merchant. Also in looking at some of the families in Knowlton, NJ in the tax lists some of the names: Insley, Drake, Harned are very common in Woodbridge NJ earlier. So perhaps Lawrence came from Woodbridge. If anyone could provide me any information on Lawrence or Lion Jones I would be most grateful. Sandy

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] History of Andover
    2. Some time in the early 1960's I saw a History of the town of Andover. Most likely it was written in conjunction with the centennial celebration. Does anyone have a copy of it. In Snell it refers to the 1st meeting of the town of Andover on April 1864. David Hedden was chosen Justice of the Peace. I would like to see if there are any references to David in that history. I believe he is my GGGgrandfather. He also had a son named David. But the son was only 18 in April, 1864 so I am inclined to believe that this referred to the Father. Any help would be appreciated. 3. I am new to the list and am researching the Berry family of New Jersey from the late 1700's into the late 1800's. I have gone back as far as Schooley Berry who married Mary Ann Little. They had 9 children one of whom was my ggrandfather. I think Schooley's father may have been Garret Berry who married Elizabeth Collard in Sussex County, NJ on May 17, 1815 but I am not quite sure. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Kathy
