I do not know if everyone knows that there is a new list or rather many new lists offering the potential for actual census lookups. There is a lookup list for each state of the union. New Jersey's is NJ-Census-Lookup-L@rootsweb.com to subscribe either click on the link below or send a message to NJ-Census-Lookup-L-request@rootsweb.com mailto:nj-census-Lookup-L-request@rootsweb.com in the message portion put one word: subscribe There are certain rules for the list and I am paraphrasing (I do not own the NJ list) so if the listowner of the NJ Census lookup list would like to correct my attempts at the rules, please feel free to do so. 1. in the subject put the census year/county/surname 1. if possible, try to to find out the page number from the Census index by going to Ancestry or on the CD's. (ancestry is running a free trial right now) To sign up for the free trial go to The information you would find there would be, for example: James Gardner, Bergen Co, NJ; page 076; Bergen Twp. Federal Population Schedule, NJ 1830 from the Federal Census index for 1840 it would be this: James Gardner, Hudson Co, NJ; page 203; Bergen Twp. Federal Population Schedule, NJ 1840 2. Ask for only one census year at a time and for one or two people at a time (please do not ask for "all" the Browns or Smiths) 3. remember that there is no one assigned to do lookups; if someone has access to census records or indexes, they will look it up for you provided they have the time. 4. All queries on census requests and replies should go to the list and not be sent in private email. 5. If no one has access to that particular census, then you will receive no answer, so don't get upset or write curt notes to the list wondering why your lookup has not been done. There is absolutely no charge for this service and I have no stake in this; I just would like to pass along the information just, in case, some of you don't know about it. Please consider joining the list and offering lookups; even if it is just to check a county and year for a person to find if they are there and to give them the page from the index. -- Diane Ward Sives
My great-grandmother, Margaret Bradbury, b. 1854 was given the middle name of BROSS. I was never able to learn where that name came from, but recently I found out that there were members of the Bross family in Sussex Co. Does anyone out there have access to the 1840 or 1850 census of Sussex Co.? If so, I'd like a lookup, especially in the Sparta area, to see whether the Bradbury family lived near a Bross family. Margaret Bradbury's father was an itinerant preacher, Rev. John Bradbury. There are no Bross names anywhere in Margaret's family tree. Many thanks for anyone who can help in any way. John Losey, son of John (Jan) Losey and Jane (Jannetje) Brouwer, born about 1723 m Hannah Holbard on 16 Aug 1749 in First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ. Seversmith lists 15 children baptised at First Presbyterian Church, Morristown. I was wondering if anyone had comments on this. John, his father John and his father's brother William all had children baptised there during the same years. John the father lists his children in his will so they are correct. The problem is the 15 children of John the son. William also had a son John (Jan) baptised 1727, are some of these children his? Did William's son stay in NY? Did he die young? Did John, son of John, really have 15 children? John b 1723 had a son John b 1766, possibly the one who m Sarah, communicants of same church 1 Nov 1796. Thats not possible because John b 1766 was listed as dying July 1788, same month and year as his brother? Abner b 1770. So there must be another John which leads me back to William's son John, who must have had a son John, or was it William's grandson who died? Not likely since John Jr. named a daughter Phebe, the name of William's wife. any help appreciated, Sharon Rhodes

Many folks have contacted me asking if there is more info contained in the list. Yes!!! There is acres, value, horses, cattle, mills, slaves etc. I plan on getting the entire document on line at the Vernon Historical Society site at vernonweb.com [this site is currently inactive, tho vernonweb is active with local news] I will try to get this done before Christmas because I know how exciting [and difficult] it is to find new info. Hi Sheryl & Sussex & Warren folks, My great grandfather was Peter Lanterman who married Lucy Jane Potter (1841-1911). Her parents were Elias Potter (1800- ) and Sarah Givens (1799-1858). My father remembers Lucy Jane fondly, although he was only 18 when she died. I have a tin-type picture of Lucy. I haven't been able to find Elias' parents, Help! Hello All.........I'm new to your list and hoping to find some ancestors in Sussex County. I searching for William ULYSSES, and wife Ruth KERN. They lived in New Jersey when their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth was born during 1851. Sarah married William Charles Ritter about 1870.
The thing I'd like most for Christmas is: To find the parents of Ellen(Eleanor) HOOVER b 1830 NJ, d 1890 Johnsonburg, Warren Co., NJ. Married Joseph L. HUFF and lived in Stillwater, Sussex Co., NJ. Ellen's death certificate indicates her father was Jacob HOOVER b in USA. In a bio, Ellen's mother is reported to have lived to be 105 yrs, dying in Stanhope. Trying to find proof that Ellen's mother was same person as Elizabeth SICKLES, w/o Jacob, who died at the age of 104 in Stanhope. Nancy Pascal pascalfl@gate.net
