    3. Anyone who is a member or is familiar with the SHS --- do they have an email address? I just noticed that one of the trustees is June DOBSON, but no way to contact her or the SHS is provided. I think she is the same Mrs Dobson who was my 1st and then 7th grade teacher at Morris Plains Boro School. Howzat for a blast from the past? If anyone knows her, please pass on that one of her former students (also known as "little men") still thinks she's the greatest! Thanks Rich in NH

    1. RE: [NJSUSSEX-L] Researching ancestors while the snow piles up
    2. Rick Lane
    3. We just returned from NE PA and Sussex County. Yes, they have snow, and yes I did tramp through it. The day after Christmas I took my family, including my wife who believes she was held hostage and went hiking through the woods to the Van Campen cemetary. It was a wonderful trip except for my 5 year old saying she was cold and my 21 month old refusing to walk in knee deep (for her) snow. It was a great walk though as my 10 year old lead the way. This was likely our last family Christmas vacation to NJ and PA for sometime. We will be having another child this summer. I hope to go solo to NJ this spring or early summer and spend a week researching. If any of you would like to experience Sussex County, go soon! It is growing rapidly. The area behind our old home in Springdale has been developed. I never imagined it. We've gone up for the last 6 years and the last three seem to have reflected the most change. Don't get me wrong, it is still very beautiful, but is being developed rapidly, including NE PA. On a side note, a lady within the last 3 months contacted me regarding Van Atta and the Balesville Cemetary. I've lost your address, please reply. There are quite a few Van Atta's, including a Lizzie. Happy New Year too all. Side note to Nancy - I haven't been to the library lately. 3. Thank you Cathy for all the good work you have done. The Town of Minisink, Orange County, NY is right next door to Sussex County, NJ. Our Minisink Museum (built in 1992) now has a web page and email. Come visit us. When doing research, I was amazed at how many Sussex people got married here. We have the following on our web page: Census 1870 and 1880 (working on 1850 and 1860); Birth 1847, 1848, 1849 (working on 1881-1925), Marriage 1847, 1848, 1849 (working on 1881-1925), Death 1847, 1848, 1849 (working on 1881-1925). We will be adding family farmsteads, maps, photos and tax lists later on. Web Page - www.geocities.com/minisinkmuseum Email - minitown@warwick.net or minisinkmuseum@hotmail.com Carol Van Buren

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Thanks to Cathy
    2. Another thank you from sunny, dry but cold CA. Here in the Bay Area it may be 60 in the afternoon but it's freezing at night. And there is snow in them thar hills to the East a couple of hours away, if I I need an east coast winter fix. Cathy, first thanks for this most recent list of online possibilities and resources. As a long distance researcher I truly appreciate this kind of assistance. But more importantly I want to thank you for your time, energy, knowledge and generous spirit that makes the Sussex County list so useful and successful for the rest of us. We are all very fortunate to have you snowbound there in NJ. In my opinion you are a star "listowner." Too often we take folks like you for granted and do not give recognition where it is due; so from myself and I suspect many other list participants I send you a heartfelt thank you and a big hug{{{{ Cathy}}}}}. Do be sure to let us all know if there is anything we can do to help you during the coming months. Also, a heartfelt thank you is due to all the many other list participants, who by regularly sharing their Sussex County knowledge, family histories and other research activities and then generously responding to inquires from other folks like me. You all make this list useful, insightful and supportive to family historians and researchers and do contribute to the ideals of this exciting and interesting activity called genealogy that seems to have us all in its thrall. My resolution is that in the first year of the new millennium I will do one thing more a week to give back to others in the genealogy community from my knowledge or abilities, be it contributing research to a rootsweb list, answering a board query or participating more at the local genealogy society [even though as a first generation Californian I am not sure I have much of use, but even I can help by giving a few hours to getting our county census data online or early records]. Happy New Year, Century and Millennium to you all. Gail Van Wye

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Researching ancestors while the snow piles up
    2. Well, Bob...I don't see how folks like you ever get any genealogical research done when you live in a climate that keeps you outside all year long. We northern Midwesterners count on the days when it only makes sense to stay in with a pot of coffee and our list of brick walls. Here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin we finally got temps into the low 20's but had to take another dump of snow along with the "warm" weather. I quit paying any attention when we had 37" of the white stuff on the ground and we've had a lot more since then. The snowplow has piled up the end of my driveway and until I go shovel I can't get out anyway, so this is a good excuse to do research. Susan

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Miss Margaret Cox of Newton, Sussex County, NJ
    2. Carol Ann Hilton
    3. In reviewing notes from a cousin, I found information about correspondence between someone (it's not clear exactly who) in my branch of the Rorick family and Miss Margaret Cox. It includes her relationship to the family as follows: 1. Gasper Rorick, Jr., b. 1748; d. 1843, m. Betsey ________. 2. Betsey Rorick, dau. Gasper, Jr. and Betsey m. David Carr. 3. Mary Carr, dau. David and Betsey (Rorick) Carr m. James DeWitt. 4. Margaret DeWitt, dau. James and Mary (Carr) DeWitt m. Lewis J. Cox. 5. Martin J. Cox, son of Lewis and Margaret (DeWitt) Cox married Nellie Fotens. 6. Margaret Cox, b. July 28, 1905 Newton, Sussex Co., N.J. This cousin also quotes an unnamed Sussex County newspaper from May 14, 1936: The Chinkchewunska Chapter of D.A.R. will unveil three makers on Saturday, May 15, 1936 on graves of Revolutionary Soldiers in Papakating Cemetery on the Hamburg Road. Gosper Rorick Jr. of the N.J. Troops will be one of the soldiers so honored and at the Rorick grave Miss Margaret Cox of Newton, a descendant, will read the biography. Anson DeWitt of Sussex will unveil the marker. Does any of this genealogy fit into anyone else's family tree? I know that Gasper, Jr. had a daughter named Elizabeth, who married Martin Search. This seems to be a different daughter and her family. I'm a descendant of Gasper, Jr.'s brother, Michael Rorick. My branch of the family refers to him as Gasper Jr. as Gasper and Michael's father was also named Gasper. Carol Ann Hilton http://www.geocities.com/carolann_hilton/Rorick.html

    3. As we approach the New Year, one of my resolutions is to find answers to the following questions. If anyone can help me keep my resolution, I'll do what I c.an to help you keep yours if I can share information. Hannah Rorick m. 18 Aug 1814 to John Middaugh. He died in 1835 and his will mentions minor children, but does not list names. What were the names of the children? Susan Rorick b. 1808 married Lewis Moore. Her brother Mark Rorick b. 1822 married Anne Elizabeth Moore. Who were Lewis and Anne's parents and are they related? (Mark and Anne are my g-g-g-grandparents). I have sketchy information on Susan and Lewis's children and slightly better information on Mark and Anne's if it helps anybody. Finally, I have a copy of a speech titled "The Rorick Family in America" by Horton C. Rorick, given at a Rorick family reunion in Michigan in 1940 that draws on speeches given by previous Roricks from the 1870s on. He states that Jacob Rorick and Elizabeth Wilson, who married in Sussex County in 1800 had 14 children: six daughters and eight sons. I've identified six daughters (Lavina, Hannah, Susan, Lucy, Harriet, and Elizabeth) but only seven sons (Samuel, William, Estell, a Mark who died young, John, Cosper, and the Mark who was my g-g-g-grandfather). Who was the eight son? Any assistance would be appreciated. Carol Ann http://www.geocities.com/carolann_hilton/Rorick.html

    3. List, I am researching the Rice's from Bucks Co., PA and am back to an Edward Rice who is first mentioned in the Co. in 1742, when he married Elizabeth Wilson. I noticed some of his children move to N.J. after they married, and am wondering if there might be an earlier connection in N.J. for my Edward Rice. I believe Edward left N.Ireland in 1736, but I have no info on him between that date and his marriage in 1742. I wonder if he had connections in N.J. before he finally settled in PA. Would you have any info on the Rice family that could shed light on my question? Thanks, Bob Rice from Lancaster Co., PA

    3. Hi, Folks... I've added lists of Baptisms, communicants and confirmations, some deaths and marriages from this church in Greenwich, Warren County, to my web site. Marilyn Souders sent me a copy of the transcripts from the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. While I was typing it, Albert Hosbach sent me ANOTHER transcript of these records...and in looking them over, I discovered that there were numerous discrepancies between the two. Therefore, when I finished typing and proofreading, I went back and compared what I had against the second transcript and noted the differences in brackets...and in italics...and in red. (Blame it on my special ed. background...I want to be perfectly clear, I guess!) You can see these lists beginning at http://raub-and-more.com/straw/strawbap1.html.
