    3. The New Jersey He (rald) continuing Sussex Register Newton, N.J. Thursday December 14, 1950 Out of the past This was the office of the New jersey Herald as it appeared around 1895. At that time the Herald occupied the upper side of what is now the post office building on Main Street. It was then the Dennis Library building and the post office and the Herald shared the first floor, thelibrary was on the second floor and there was an auditorium on the third floor. Seated at the desk in the foreground is Jacob L/ Bunnell, who was editor and publisher of the paper. With Thomas G. Bunnell he bought th epaper in1888, and in 1892 he became editor and publisher. Standing in the rear is Henry C. Bonnell, who acted as plant foreman at that time and also did some writing on the side. The bookkeeper at the typewriter is Bessie Clark. The Herald was a tenant in the Dennis Library building from 1873 to 1922, then because the Post Office needed more room, the Herald picked up all it's machinery and moved to the Lovely building on Spring Street at the foot of High Street. This is the Store now occupied by Wallace's Jewelry shop. In 1925 , the Herald's new home on High Street opposite Park Place was completed and the paper moved into the building which it now occupies. The present offices of the Herald bear no resmblance to the cramped quarters occupoed more than n century ago, and the plant itself has increased in size and equipment many fold. Bunnell remained as head of the paper until he died in 1932.

    2. Nancy O. Heydt
    3. Hi Carol and all, Thank you for all the work you're doing on the Sussex Marriages! I don't know too much about Sussex co, so forgive me if this is a stupid question: what kind of quarries are in Quarryville? Are they slate quarries? I'm on the lookout for Cornish families and there were a lot of them in the Slate Belt of PA and I believe there were some in Sussex. I'm looking in the marriages for Cornish names but haven't seen any yet. Cornish names are especially those that start with "By TRE-, ROS-, POL-, LAN-, CAR- and PEN, Ye shall know most Cornishmen." Tre is definitely the biggest and outside of these prefixes there are lots of other Cornish names (mostly from the Cornish language). Tremaine, Trelease, Trembath, Trengove, Trelawny, Trevithick and on and on and on. "Tre" is the village or homestead. Roscarrow, Rosewarne, Roskelly, Rosevear Polmear, Pollard, Polglase, Polkinghorne Landry, Lanfear, Lanyon, Lansallos Carthew, Carkeet, Carbis, Carlyon Penhallow, Penrose, Pendragon (as in Arthur), Penglaze, Penhale, Penhaglion, Penberth, etc. But also names like Rowe, Udy, Jewell, Hoskin, Hocking, Sawle, Pascoe, Truran, Vivian, Bonython, Jago, Nance, Nancarrow and more. If you have or know of any names like that in Sussex, please let me know. I have a database of almost 3,200 names of Cornish in NJ. 172 of them are in Sussex County. They were in slate quarries and zinc mines that I know of. I'd be happy to share any information I have and very happy to get more. 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] RUDE family
    2. Catherine Di Pietro
    3. Howdy Folks, In last Sunday's New Jersey Herald, the Jennie Sweetman History Column was about a woman in Hamburg, NJ - Ella "Cookie" RUDE SMITH - who is researching the RUDE family. Ella has the genealogy done by her aunt, Ethel Coon, done for the occassion of Ethel's parents' 50th anniversary - John and Anna HOPPER RUDE. Also mentioned in the article is Mona Rood of Texas who has compiled a 820-page book on the Rood Genealogy. That family history goes back to Thomas Rood/Lerude born circa 1602 in England. Cookie's aunt believed her Rude family of Sussex county originated in France while a Rude family of Franklin was of Italian descent. She also notes that the family skeleton stems from the immigrant, Thomas Rood(e). He was believed to be the first person hung in Norwich, CT after being convicted of incest with his daughter, Sarah. Ms. Smith continues that her ancestor, Noah Rude, migrated to Morris county from Connecticut. She longs to fill in more of the blanks in her research. Cookie Smith would love to hear from others working on this family, the article concludes. You can contact her at (973) 827-1875 or Cookie12@aiov.com I've contacted Cookie both for permission to post this and as verification of her email address. She is eager to hear from other RUDE researchers. Happy Hunting, Cathy DiPietro vdpcom@warwick.net listowner: NJSussex

    1. Re: [NJSUSSEX-L] WILSON, WESTBROOK
    2. Hello Friends, I saw the recent post to the Sussex County Mailing List regarding Andrew Wilson, his daughter Mary Wilson and her husband, Richard Westbrook.. [my ancestors] The Genealogy Magazine of New Jersey copied inscriptions from the Clove Cemetery in Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ, on 19 Oct, 1929. The records are published in Gen. Mag. of NJ. Vol IV No. 2 Out. 1930, whole No. 22, pg. 47- 50. The following is what was published: Westbrook, Richard, d. March, 1807, aged 82 years, 9 months & 12 days. I would like to correct an error that was made in this publication. I had returned to the Clove Cemetery many times to find Richard Westbrook's tombstone, because I found it highly improbable Andrew Wilson would have named a 78 year old son-in-law as one of the executors of his estate. [Richard would have turned 82 in 1806. (1806 82 = 1724). Andrew Wilson made his will in 1802. (1802 1724 = 78)] Persistence did pay off; and I finally found Richard Westbrook's tombstone. He is interred next to his daughter, Naomi and son in law, Bowdewine Decker. On initial inspection, the inscription on Richard's tombstone appeared to be totally worn away, but with some extensive and very careful removal of the many layers of lichen, the following inscription was revealed: Richard Westbrook Who Departed This Life Died March 1807 62 years 9 months and 12 days. The 6 in his age at death is very clearly a 6 and not an 8. It is very unlikely that an error was made during the initial transcription. Suspect the error was made when the inscriptions were typed for publication. [ I took photographs.] [Personally copied the dates and age of death on Richard Westbrook tombstone -- 5/17/98. ] Harold I.
