If any of you have relatives who moved to Michigan in the mid 1800s, the Library of Michigan has almost all of the 1870 census for Michigan online at http://envoy.libraryofmichigan.org/1870_census/. They add additional pages regularly and the goal is to have the entire census up. 1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Beardsley - Sutton - Michigan Census
    2. J. Kelsey Jones asked questions and Carol responded regarding the Beardsley - Sutton connection as it relates to the 1870 Michigan Census; however, I can specifically answer the question regarding the Beardsley connection. See the end of this message for more details. In a message dated 1/25/2001 1:01:49 AM Pacific Standard Time, NJSUSSEX-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << X-Message: #6 Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 20:49:46 -0500 From: "Carol Ann Hilton" <carol.ann.hilton@erols.com> To: NJSUSSEX-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NJSUSSEX-L] Sussex County Folk in the 1870 Michigan Census J. Kelsey Jones asked ... > Curious as to which Ayers, Beardslees and Moores... I'd found in the 1870 Michigan Census. I'm researching the descendants of Gaspar Rorick (whose sons, Michael and Gaspar settled in Sussex County), so all of these descend in some way from him. Joseph AYERS or AYRES (born abt. 1812 in Sussex County) who married Hannah SUTTON (born 12 Aug 1832 in Sussex County, d/o Michael Rorick Sutton and Elizabeth Forrester) is in the household of his father-in-law (Michael Rorick Sutton), with his wife and two children, Joseph S. Ayers (14 in the census) and Augusta L. Ayers (11 in the census). His occupation is boot/shoemaker (as is his father in law). They are in Macomb County. Also, I forgot to mention in my first message that there are other Sussex County Suttons in Michigan in 1870. Susan Rorick married Lewis MOORE (1807-1853). He was born and died in Sussex County and is buried in the North Church cemetery (thank you, Nancy Pascal!). His widow emigrated to Lenawee County (joining three brothers and two sisters, their families, and the children of two brothers and their wives and one neice who all died in Sussex County leaving under-age children who were then sent to the families in Lenawee County). She remarried to a widower named Moses Vail, and she is found in 1870 with him as Susan Vail. The children of her first marriage (all last name Moore) included John A. (born about 1828), Josie (born about 1830), Jacob B. (abt. 1832), Mary R. (abt. 1834), and A.L. "Losey" Moore (abt. 1835). The sons are in the 1870 census in Lenawee County. I believe the two older sons are with their wives and children. A.L. is with his mother and stepfather. And, if anyone knows who Lewis Moore's parents were, I'd be much obliged. Finally, two daughters of Lewis Sutton and Elizabeth Losey married BEARDSLEEs. The husbands were both born in NJ, per the census, and I suspect they came from Sussex County. The wives were born there. Abigail Sutton (1829-1919) married Ebenezer Beardslee (1820-1914). They had Anna (abt. 1852), Charlotte (abt. 1853), Arabella (abt. 1855), Samuel (abt. 1856), Flora (abt. 1858), Ruth Ann (abt. 1860), Mary Ellen (abt. 1862), Lucy (abt. 1864), Carrie W. (abt. 1867), and Augusta (abt. 1874). They and the children who were alive in 1870 are listed in Independence Township, Oakland County. Susan Sutton (born 2 May 1836) married Charles Beardslee (abt. 1837). They are also in Oakland County with Ada C. (abt. 1858), Anna Eliza (abt. 1860), Rowland (abt. 1862), Charles F. (abt. 1866), and Freddie (abt. 1869). I would also like to know the parents of Charles and Ebenezer Beardslee. Was this a case of brothers marrying sisters? Hope this is helpful. Carol Ann ____________________ >> Okay, here is the connection: Ebenezer and Charles were indeed brothers. There were actually 11 children in the family. Ebenezer has a middle name of Tuttle. Their parents are Thomas and Rachel (Tuttle) Beardsley. These lines are in the Beardsley Genealogy by Nellie Judson Beardsley Holt and Charles Eleazer Holt published in 1951. If you wish more definitive information, please contact me off list as the Beardsley family was originally from England, via Connecticut and some did migrate to New Jersey and finally to Michigan. Ebenezer Tuttle Beardsley married Abigail Marie Losey Sutton and Charles married Susan Sutton. The unfortunate thing is the wives do not list who their parents are so I can't definitively state that they were sisters, however, based on the fact that Susan was born in 1836 and Abigail was born in 1829, it is more than likely they are as the Beardsley's have had a tendancy to intermarry, even within the Beardsley surname itself as well. Plus, it looks like Carol has tied the two sisters together pretty conclusively with the "Losey" name as the mother listed above and the one daughter having that as a middle name. Anyway, I can take you back to William Beardsley, the gentlemen who decided to migrate from England to America and started the whole Beardsley clan here in America--at least the ones that settled in Connecticut, that is. Can't speak for any who might have come over and settled elsewhere <g>. Besides the children listed in the census record for Charles and Susan (Sutton), there are a few more, for a total of 9 children. Ebenezer had 10 children himself. One of the 10 can be brought down some more as one line continues beyond this point. I am a Beardsley descendant myself and Ebenezer Tuttle is my 1st cousin 5x removed with "Col" Charles Beardsley as the common ancestor; however, William Beardsley is my 9th great grandfather. Which line are you from, Charles or Ebenezer? Look forward to hearing from you. Christie Trapp Christietrapp@aol.com

My ancestors Ezra DeGarmo and Peter DeGarmo were among those who moved from Sussex County, NJ to Tyre, NY during the 1790's. They moved with Stephen Crane, who was likewise from Sussex County. The father of Ezra and Peter, Paul DeGarmo (1737-1820) left Sussex County, NJ around 1800 and moved westward to Randolph County, VA (now WV). If you haven't done so you may also want to check Randolph County, VA for missing relatives as there were several families who left Sussex County, NJ and went there around 1800. Bill DeGarmo

    3. Many NJ families moved to Upstate NY after the Rev. War. It was still frontier land and some got military bounty land. Many Rev War vets from NJ, had been through the area with Sullivan on his march through the area against the Iroquois and saw the rich farm land. Others followed neighbors, friends, family looking for better opportunities. There are instances where neighborhoods in that area of NY were filled with the same surnames you find in NJ. My own family came from Sussex County, NJ and I have found it fascinating to see the make up of the NJ neighborhoods and how they will almost mirror neighborhoods that were established in the Finger Lakes. I have very old photo's of people that were related to me. I am sure most are from the 1800's. Do you know of a web-site in Minnesota that listed photographer's business names from 1800 to 1900. Would like to know when business were sold & to whom. Looking for info leading to possible information on who these people are. ==== NJ Mailing List ==== Guidelines of the List: No Flaming, Arguing, Poems, Religious messages, Political Messages, Computer Software messages or Y2K messages, Virus Messages, Test Messages, Chain Letters, SPAM, Advertising other lists, or Roll Calls. ============================== Search over 900 million names at Ancestry.com! http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist1.asp

    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Decker/Elston/Clark
    2. Hi all, I have seen Deckers, Elstons and Clarks discussed, and I wonder if anyone knows of George R. Decker, b. Dec 1880 possibly NY, and later lived in or near Vernon in Sussec Co. He was a dairy farmer. Does anyone know which John Elston had a farm near Vernon in the late 1800's . Does anyone of a Laura B. Clark who resided in that same area in the early to mid 1900's? Were there many mills in the area? Thanks for any help, Marla
