    2. Marilyn Current
    3. Roz, Any chance your Lt. (fnu) Barton was the same as Lt. Col. Joseph Barton, of Sussex Co.: I was sent the following awhile back from Ernie Wirdel, a Current family researcher: From an article entitled " The Price of Loyalty" by Michael Boles published in the "Sussex County Almanack" produced by the Sussex County Historical Society. This article appeared in the WINTER 1998 issue: Fact: One of the most powerful weapons New Jersey had in fighting the British during the Revolutionary War was the passing of punitive laws that enabled the outright confiscation of property belonging to individuals loyal to the King. From the ALMANACK "The hardest hit were Oliver DeLancey and Joseph Barton. DeLancey, a member of a famous New York political family had been acquiring land in Sussex County for many years through Barton, his local agent" "These two men (DeLancey and Barton) ranked as two of the largest landowners, and both were high ranking officers in the British Army's Loyalist Corp. While DeLancey lost hundreds of acres, Barton's loss was more personal. On September 13, 1779 Barton's 500 acre farmstead in Papakating, near Newton was sold at auction." Later the British began to review claims for compensation by American Loyalists, including a number from Sussex County. Invariably these individuals were urged to migrate to Canada. In a contingent article that also appeared in the Almanack (Fall 2001), is an extraction from the January 12, 1778 issue of a New York City newspaper, "The New York Gazette and Weekly Journal". It quotes as follows: "Last Wednesday died of the Small pox, in her 48th year, Mrs. Barton, wife of Colonel Joseph Barton, of the 5th Battalion of the Loyalist New Jersey Corps; she had been driven with 7 small children from their estate in Sussex County where she had endured every sort of persecution from the rebels. She was stripped of her property whilst the Colonel was a prisoner of the rebels at Weathersfield in Connecticut. She was a valuable member of society, and her death is greatly regretted" Or, here are some other choices: Following is a list of all the Barton officers who served in the New Jersey Volunteers during the course of the American Revolution from 1776 to 1783. http://www.royalprovincial.com/military/musters/1njv/njvvacant1.htm The On-Line Institute for Advanced Loyalist Studies New Jersey Volunteers Roster of Officers 1776-1783 No. Name Battalion Rank & Date of Commission/Warrant 21. 1. RE: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed
    2. Marilyn Current
    3. Thank you very much, Cathy! So now, from this, I know the Lemons moved to Oxford in May, 1772. Do you happen to find any mention of William Current in the deed books? He was already married to the Lemon's daughter, Esther, and I believed they moved to Oxford at the same time, but have no proof. William may have forfeited his lands in Oxford sometime between 1783 and 1793, due to his Loyalist activities during the war. (In 1783 he was character witness for his neighbor, Peter Appleman's Loyalist claim, so must have been living at that time still, in Oxford. In 1793 his son Joseph was listed on a tax list in Newtown. Wm. Current wasn't mentioned, but I believe they were living in the same household, as Joseph didn't marry until 1800. Then, in 1796 the family moved together to Niagara Dist., Ont.) I would really like to find where his lands were, and in what year he bought them, and when he lost them. thank you so much for your help Marilyn Current -----Original Message----- From: Cathy & Vin DiPietro [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 3:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed Sussex County Deed Book E page 302 dated 14 Dec 1796 Elizabeth SWAYZE and Joshua SWAYZE, executors of the LWT (Last Will and Testament) of Isreal SWAYZE, dec'd, of Oxford to John & Michael LEMON of Fishing Creek Twp., Northumberland, PA Whereas Isreal SWAYZE by his bond datd 2 May 1772 bound himself to make deeds for lands in Oxford to the said Joseph LEMON and he deceased and left a LWT dated 19 Dec 1792 wherein he bequeathed to John & Michael LEMON equally between them the said lands. This deed is rather confusing (Notes of deed book abstractor Clyde W. Downing) Apparently there are three John BOWLSBYs. The first was the grandfather of the grantor. The second was the son of the first and the father of the grantor. John the 1st left LWT dated 7 Dec 1799 in which he left to his grandsons John & James BOWLSBY who later divided the property. There was a Quit Claim Deed dated 1 Nov 1785 in which Samuel BOWLSBY and Elizabeth his wife and Thomas BOWLSBY and Sarah his wife quit claimed to said John and James BOWLSBY. It is probable that the second John BOWLSBY is deceased. The deed is signed by John & James BOWLSBY. Wit: Jacob SWEAZEY & George B. WARNE. On the same day, John BOWLSBY Jun. signed a receipt for the money. I think Samuel and Thomas BOWLSBY were brothers of the second John BOWLSBY, On 14 Feb 1801 John and Rachel BOWLSBY deposed to Judge Robert BEAVERS, (Rachel BOWLSBY was the daughter of Daniel SWAYZE (6), Barnabas (5), Samuel (4), Joseph (3), John (2), John (1). Daniel (6) had a son James (7) who was my ancestor and a daughter Anna who married Isreal DAWDY, son of James. Daniel's wife, Deborah, was pregnant with a child at the time Daniel wrote his LWT dated 9 Jan 1779, The unborn child at that time turned out to be Daniel (7) who later married Anna SWAYZE his first cousin. She was a daughter of Benjamin (6) son of Barnabas (5). John BOWLSBY and Rachel his wife later moved to Upper Canada. Israel DAWDY and Anna his wife did also. All of Benjamin (6) children also moved to Canada. Rachel BOWLSBY died before 23 Dec 1816 at Woodhouse, Upper Canada - Clyde W. Downing. 1. Oxford Loyalists> Newton > Newark?
    2. Marilyn Current
    3. I have been doing so much research that I've fallen behind on e-mails. Roz, did I answer your question? - UEL stands for United Empire Loyalist, which William Current was, as well as many of his Oxford, Sussex Co. neighbors. Here are examples from among his neighbors, about whom I have collected tidbits: (Notes from Ernie Wirdel): 1778 - From NJ Archives: Notice is given to all persons who have any claim, interest, or demand to, in or against the estate of (amomg others) JAMES MOODY ( Lt. In the American Volunteers regiment of British Empire Loyalists who led many raids against Rebel sympathizers in the Sussex Co. area of NJ) and WILLIAM CURRENT. The fact that JAMES MOODY and WILLIAM CURRENT were captured and indicted at approxamately the same time leads to the assumption that WILLIAM CURRENT served under the command of JAMES MOODY. It appears that WILLIAM CURRENT was pardoned under certain specified terms. It should also be noted that some of the individuals held in this instance were sentenced to be hanged in the square at Morristown. (Marilyn's NOTE: I wish I had the entire list of names. If anyone has that, would you send it to me?) 1780 - WILLIAM CURRENT joined a Loyalist British unit mustered in the area of present Sussex/Warren counties by ROBERT ELLISON, Esq (Loyalist) "The American Volunteers", Col. SAMUEL RYERSON, commanding. COL. SAMUEL RYERSON later settled in Port Ryerse in Canada. This is near where the Currents also came to roost. NOTE: a similiar regiment raised in nearby Orange Co., NY in August 1777, was named "The Orange Rangers", Col BAYARD COMLANDER, commanding. In August 1777, a JOHN Le MONT (JOHN LEMON ?) was listed as a Pvt in "BARCLAY's Company" of the Orange Rangers. NOTE: WILLIAM CURRENT served in a Tory unit that apparently conducted operations as a "Terrorist Type Unit". Question: Did the "Sons of Liberty", a similiar unit on the Rebel side possibly led by COL. ISAAC CARY (of North Church, Sussex Co., NJ) harrass the Current family in retaliation? This senario would allow for such activity to have taken place in 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1783. Further, it has been noted that such harrasments in fact did take place as late as the early 19th century -- especially as another war with Great Britain was on the horizon near 1812. (Marilyn's NOTE: Does anyone have info about ROBERT ELLISON, Esq. & those he mustered, and/or those under COL. SAMUEL RYERSON's command? I am lacking any documentation for these.) Here's another UEL neighbor: 1784 - Wm. Current still living in Oxford, Sussex (now Warren) Co., NJ: Book: American Migrations 1765-1799, by Peter Wilson Coldham, Surrey, Eng.; pub. by Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc.; 101 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD, p. 378 New Jersey - APPLEMAN, PETER of Oxford, Sussex Co. Memorial by attorney, London, 1784 "Because of his loyalty in joining the army in 1776, he has been reduced to Distress Claim for a farm near Delaware River. Supporting affidavits 1783 by WILLIAM LOUDER and WILLIAM CURRENT, former, near neighbours." (Note: PETER APPLEMAN was on the May 1787 list of those in Sussex Co., NJ whose property was confiscated for joining the King's Army.) June 1793 - Wm. CURRENT prob. living in Newton, Sussex Co., NJ. WILLIAM CURRENT not listed in the NJ tax list, but his son, JOSEPH CURRENT, was listed in New Town, Sussex Co.: Ancestry.com Database: NJ Census, 1772-1890 1793 - CURRENT, JOSEPH, Sussex Co., NJ, New Town, June Tax List, NJ Tax Lists Index 1772-1822 NJS1b883206 Anthony Whelan's notes: The rolls called for free white men between ages 18-45. *JOSEPH son of Wm., SR., would be just 18 in 1793, so could be same. (Marilyn's NOTE: William would have been over 45 in age in 1793, so that must be why he wasn't listed. Joseph was not married yet, and later migrated with his parents to Ontario, so he was probably still living in the same household with them in 1793. From this, I gather that WILLIAM was also probably living in Newton in 1793.) (Was WILLIAM CURRENT prevented from returning to Oxford, due to his Loyalist activites?): Sept. 1796 - Wm. CURRENT family relocates to Canada: Did he live in Newark when this document was signed? (LOYALIST DOCUMENTS transcriptions for Wm CURRENT):: This certifies that we the subscribers were well acquainted with the bearer of this WILLIAM CURRENT before and during the late Rebellion and that he behaved himself as a honest man and a good neighbor and a good British Subject and that he joined a core mustered by ROBT. ELLISON Esq. about 1780[?] in consequence of which he was taken prisoner and fined in seventy pound CY [currency] Newark 22th September DAVID J. KAMP 1796 JACOB LEMON ROBERT CAMP (Marilyn's NOTE: So, David Kamp, Jacob Lemon and Robert Camp had all been Oxford residents during the years of the conflict?, and were also Loyalists. Were they all living in Newark in 1796 when they signed this document?) In 1839 WILLIAM CURRENT died in Crowland, Niagara Dist., Can. His will was witnessed by a STEPHEN SKINNER and a SAMUEL GLOVER. I believe I've seen the GLOVER name in New Jersey. A STEPHEN SKINNER was on the May 1787 list of those of Hunterdon Co., NJ whose property was confiscated for joining the King's Army. Many relocated together to Niagara Dist, Can. If anyone has records of other neighbors of William Current in the Oxford area during the years of the Revolution, especially those who were of Loyalists sympathines, and have knowledge of where they went to from Sussex Co., I would really appreciate hearing from you.. 3. Roz, GenealogyCDs.com <http:\\www.GenealogyCDs.com> has a CD called "Military Records of the New Jersey Volunteers" that contains a digitized book called "Register of the commissioned officers and privates of the New Jersey Volunteers, in the service of the United States," no author given, but published by J.H. Lyon, 1863 in Jersey City, 584 pgs. Is this the book you are referring to? The same CD has William Stryker's "The New Jersey volunteers (Loyalists) in the Revolutionary War" (Trenton, N.J.: Naar, Day & Naar, 1887). The same company has what looks to be a wonderful CD about Sussex Co. history, including a digitized copy of Snell's history and a digitized index to Snell's history. I have no connection to this company, but they appear to be reputable. Their CD's are also available on eBay. Susan M. 3. STRYKKER's "Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War" lists these individuals 2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Capt Maxwell's Company: Capt John MAXWELL, Commander (apparently served in Sussex County militia as a Lieutenant, if I'm reading Strykker's info correctly) Lt Robert MAXWELL Pvt Andrew BELLOS (BELLIS) Pvt Richard CURREN 2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Staff: Lt. BARTON (fnu) served on the staff of the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon Could anyone help to answer these questions: 1. Is this the same John MAXWELL whose name is in the Sussex Co. Deed Books as having deposed witnesses James BISHOP & Robt ALLISON on 28 February 1797. This was with regard to the December 1796 transfer of land from the heirs of Isaac SWAYZE of Oxford to the heirs of Joseph LEMON, also of Oxford. This land was located near the Beaver Brook, presumably in the vicinity of Swayzes Mills. 2. Was Robert MAXWELL related to his company commander, John? 3. Was Richard CURREN's name mispelled? Was he actually a CURRENT? 4. What was Lt. BARTON's first name? Does anyone know if STRYKKER's book comes in digital format? It lists soldier's names in alphabetical order, but I would love to be able to query his data by military unit level (the book does this for officers, but not enlisted men.) Thanks! 3. Roz, I did some research on line, and it looks like maybe I need to be doing my research for William Current in Warren Co., now, instead of Sussex Co? (Oxford, where he lived, is in the part of Sussex Co. which became Warren County, right?) But, the Beaver Brook area that Joseph Lemon lived in, is that now in Warren County, or Morris County? Or are these different Beaver Brooks? These are what I found: "Where to Fish in New Jersey Morris County: ...Beaver Brook..." "Beaver Brook Wildlife Management Area Upper Sarepta Road, Sarepta, White Township, Warren County, NJ" In the deeds, can you tell me what "LWT" means? I would certainly like to know more about the Christina Limmin, and Johan Peter Kemple. (I wonder if that is a variation of Kimble - a common name in Sussex Co.) This gives me a lead of where to look further for the Lemon family before Sussex/Warren Counties. I do know that William Current was married to Esther Lemon before moving to Oxford, so did they come from New York? Where in New York is Germantown? is that in Orange Co? February 04, 1913 in Platte Co., MO -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Current [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2004 6:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MinVal] 2 Elisha BARTON's, h/o Mary's GRIFFIN & DISBROW, NJ Hello, Hoping for help in unravelling a family mystery. Bet. 1745-1747 our ancestor, WILLIAM CURRENT, landed in NJ, an orphan, (maybe 5-7 years old?)the rest of his family having died of ship's fever. An ELISHA BARTON took him in, (possibly as an indentured servant?) The next record we have of William is in Oxford, Sussex Co., as an adult. When he lived with the Bartons he was probably in another part of New Jersey. I really need to identify who this Elisha Barton was, in order to piece together the real facts about William's early years. The problem is, there were many Elisha Bartons in NJ, NY, and PA in this time period. I need HELP in figuring out which is the correct one. One of William Current's eldest children, Charity Current, married THOMAS CAMPBELL SEXTON from Hunterdon Co., NJ on May 10, 1787, in Sussex Co. Recently I located Sexton family records which give Charity's birth as February 18, 1769, Hopewell, Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co. So maybe William lived in Hunterdon Co. before moving to Sussex Co? Giving further support to this, I have located an Elisha Barton who lived in Hunterdon Co. in the same time period: Capt. Elisha Barton was b. 5 Oct 1729 in Amwell, Hunterdon, NJ, d. 31 Mar 1823 same place, m.abt 1755 to JEMIMA VAN KIRK b. 20 Feb 1735/1736 in Hopewell Twp., Hunterdon Co.. But, I'm afraid this Elisha would have been slightly too young to have taken in an indentured servant in 1747, and definitely too young in 1745. There is conflicting information about who this Capt. Elisha Barton's parents were. The only source I have seen who has attempted to assign a father to Elisha, gives him as Noah Barton, (citing no real evidence), b. 1668 in CT, d. aft. 1737, Cranberry, Middlesex Co., NJ, m. bef. 1710 NY to Mary unknown. Even descendants of Capt. Elisha have had reason to doubt this connection, partially based on the age difference. I just came across some more information which I believe sounds more plausible. But, without proof, it is nothing but theory. This new information appears to place 2 consecutive Elisha Bartons immediately prior to Capt. Elisha Barton, making him Elisha Barton, III. Elisha Barton, II, would be the correct age to be the benefactor of William Current. What do you think of this? Anything anyone can add, or detract, from this?: from Lorne Shunk's Family Tree: (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~shunkfamilytree/FamilyTree/fam0766 6.htm) Elisha BARTON, (SR.) (s/o Roger Barton & Mary Lounsberry) b. bet.1662-1668, d. bef. 1717 at Burlington Co., NJ, m.1 to _?_ Contine, (d/o Isaac Contine), at New Rochelle, Westchester Co., NY; m2 to MARY GRIFFIN. CHILDREN by 1st marriage: 1) Thomas BARTON, b. at Westchester Co., NY, d. Hunterdon Co., NJ, m. Hannah Clark; and2) _?_ Barton, (whom I believe was Elisha Barton, Jr.), d. NJ Put this together with a bit of information picked up from Michael S. Disbrow's Family Tree (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/5853/hendis/hendis.html): BENJAMIN DISBROW (son of Henry I), b. abt. 1672, poss. on Long Island, NY, d. 10 Dec. 1733 Matawan, Monmouth Co., NJ, m. MARY GRIFFIN, Children: 1)John Disbrow, b. 1702; 2)Benjamin Disbrow, Jr., b. abt. 1707; d. 17 Mar. 1735 Matawan, Monmouth Co., NJ; m. Margaret _; no children, 3)Anne Disbrow, b. 1710; d. 1733, 4) Griffin Disbrow, b. 1712, 5) MARY DISBROW, m. Elisha Barton (This would be Elisha Barton, Jr., Mary Disbrow's step-brother, son of her mother, Mary Griffin's second spouse, Elisha Barton,Sr.) This Elisha Barton, Jr., and wife Mary Disbrow, then, are probably the parents of Capt. Elisha Barton (III) of Hunterdon Co., NJ, as well as being the Elisha Barton who took William Current into their home when he landed, orphaned, on NJ soil. So, tell me, am I crazy?!!! Is there anything anyone can add, to support this, or to point me in another direction for the real Elisha Barton who took in William Current? thanks so much for any and all help, yea or nay. 1. Re: [NJSUSSEX-L] Postcards of Franklin, NJ
    2. I have some post cards similar to this of other locations. I saw someone buy one from my tiny little home town on eBay for over $125. I couldn't stand it,so I emailed the buyer and asked why someone would pay so much for such a post card. I thought perhaps she was from there also. She said many times, local businesses or residents would have travelling photographers take pictures and put them on post cards. Usually there were only 3-5 prints made of the particular picture. Most of the ones I have look like handwriting but are part of the print describing the picture. Light or dark wording depending on the background. The back side is usually a poor quality stock, and have a very faded printing of where to put the stamp and a line between the address area and message area--although not all have that.

    3. I have been searching for an Everett family and have not been able to connect them in PA and thought they maybe from NJ. In 1850 I found a Jacob b. 1793 & Barbara1792 Everett their is Henry b. 1821, Elizabeth 1828, Dian b. 1832, Barbara Ann 5, Seda Emma 2m. I am assuming the children Barbara Ann & Seda Emma are children of Henry & Elizabeth. I have also found that Jacob & Barbara had children Daniel 1814, Nicolaus 1816 and their is not proof but I also think John b. 1823.Does this family connect with the other Everett family I have seen posted here Thanks Lily New book cemetery book http://my.lulu.com/flowerchild

    1. Postcards of Franklin, NJ
    2. Shirley Harlow
    3. I have come across five old black and white postcards of Franklin, NJ. They look almost like photos that were printed on postcard stock, not professional postcards. Three have captions in faded purple ink that look like they were hand stamped onto the photos. 1.) Scene of river and woods, no caption (May not even be Franklin, but looks like the others.) 2.) Different river/woods scene. Caption: Walkill River, Franklin, NJ 3.) Three men in suits, one appears quite older than the other two, outside what I assume to be a mine entrance. Caption: Taylor (or Tayler ?) Mine, Franklin, NJ 4.) Scene of stream and woods, man in suit sitting on fallen tree, no caption. 5.) Wide-angle view of buildings, one building in background alone on a hill. Caption: Crow's Nest, Franklin, NJ. Would anyone have any information about this type of card or the subject matter? As far as I know, my ancestors were in the southern part of Sussex Co. and I have no ties to Franklin (though visited the mineral dump many years ago when in Girl Scouts!) Shirley in Ohio, but from NJ
