Quite a number of persons at once started for the scene and were horrified at the sight. Fifty feet from the crossing was the body of Mr. Hogan, where it was hurled by the locomotive. His head had come into contact with the end of a railroad tie, scattering his brains all over the ties and causing instant death. The horse was found on the opposite side of the track, about the same distance from the crossing, with its neck broken and otherwise injured. The covered wagon was completely wrecked and strung along the track for a considerable distance. Howard LITTLE, Justice of the Peace, who resides near the scene of the accident, with Justice of the Peace Israel L. HALLOCK, who had been sent down by prosecutor HUSTON, took charge of the remains and ordered an inquest to be held the same evening. After the remains had been viewed, Charles BLANCHARD , who resides on Sparta Avenue, and was standing near the crossing at the time the accident occurred, stated that he heard the whistle blow for the crossing, and at the same instant the train came around the curve of the road in sight. The man in the wagon was standing up and was urging his horse forward in his efforts to get across the track. As the front wheels of the wagon reached the first rail, the locomotive struck the horse and the wagon, hurling the horse to one side of the track, while Mr. HOGAN was thrown to the opposite side. The wagon was wrecked. Upon going to the side of the man he discovered it was Mr. HOGAN and that he was already dead. James MILLHAM, engineer of the train, said that when he first discovered the horse and wagon approaching the track, he realized that they could not get across, and commenced to blow his whistle, at the same time applying the air brakes. The distance was too short to stop the train, and the locomotive struck the horse and wagon and ran some distance before it was stopped. The trainman went to the man's side, and finding him already dead,Conductor BAGSHAW left his flagman in charge of the body and the train ran into the station, when the officials of the road and Prosecutor HUSTON were notified. With this evidence the jury returned a verdict in substance: "That Roger HOGAN came to his death on the 8th day of June, 1904, by being struck by a train on the Lackawanna railroad while attempting to cross the track at Drake's Pond crossing." The deceased was 65 years of age, and had been a resident of Newton since he came to this country about forty years ago, with the exception of two years, when he was employed on a large farm near Montclair. He had been twice married, and returned with his second wife from Montclair last April and occupied his house on South Madison street.Since his return he has been engaged in the tea and coffee business, making daily trips about the town and surrounding country. It was while returning from one of these trips last Wednesday evening that he met his death. Between five and six o'clock there had been a heavy shower, and the curtains of the wagon were down enclosing it with the exception of the front, thereby cutting off his view of the railroad track except as he drove directly to it. On June 5th, Mansfield township celebrated it's 250th Anniversary. As part of the celebration, they published a book on the history of the township. It is approximately 100 pages (8 1/2 X 11). Inserted is a proclamation from Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire, England. The book is loaded with photographs, maps, and diagrams... many of which have never been published before. It is available from the Mansfield Township, 100 Port Murray Road, Port Murray, NJ 07865. 908-689-6151. Publication price is $10.00 + $2.75 for shipping and handling. Best, Bob Smith Port Murray, NJ
Thank you so much, Kirsten. Whatever record searches you think would be most productive. For time frames & places: William Current was b. abt. 1740 in Northern Ireland. Came to America 1745-47, just a boy- probably 5-12 years old, orphaned enroute. What port might that have been in? Tradition says he came directly to NJ. But, might that have been a NY port? Taken in by Elisha Barton and wife as indentured servant immediately. Which Elisha Barton? (Must be one b. at least by 1720 to qualify as indenture-holder.) Where did this Barton family live? NY or NJ? What type of trade were they in? - linen mill industry? William willed an entire weaving/loom house, with tackling, to his children. Where did he learn this trade, if not during his indenture? Would there be a record of such an early indenture somewhere? Joseph Lemon buys land in Beaver Brook, Oxford Twp., Sussex Co. in 1772 - first record I have of him. Joseph Lemon's daughter Esther and William Current were already married prior to this date. (Guessing abt. 1765, based on their age and birth of their first child.) Where did they meet and marry? (A marriage record would be awesome!) Were Wm. & Esther with Joseph when he bought land in Sussex Co? First record of William Current is 1773 tax rolls, Oxford, Sussex co. Where-ever Joseph Lemon was prior to buying land in Oxford, William was certainly in the same place. Found Lemons by various spellings in Orange Co., NY, as well as most areas covered by early Burlington Co., NJ. Any type of earlier records would be awesome! Marilyn, Re. Definitely am interested! I am anxious to locate Joseph Lemon prior to his purchase of land in Beaver Brook, Oxford Twp., Sussex (now Warren) Co. in May 1772. What are the dates of the quitclaims you mention in Morris Co? Joseph had a son named John Lemon, b. Dec. 1750. I am interested in finding more about Sherriff Isaac Hull. His grandson was Major John Hull b. 17 Oct 1788 and died 17 April 1851. I would like to find out if Major John Hull was the same person as lived with Olive Maines in the 1850 census. I believe Olive Maines maiden name was Hull. There is a record of Peter Maines marrying Olly Hull in Sussex County. Thank you for your help. Patrice Houck Schadt
Hello Looking for info on Peter Couse, died in Deckertown, NJ abt 7/1/1887, he was 60. Spent most of his life in Fredericksburg, VA - came from PA in 1840s & was preparing to return there when he was arrested (5/1862), by the Confederacy. Was planning to join or had already joined the Union. He was used in hostage negotiations for some Fredericksburg civilians that were being held in the Old Capitol Prison, in DC. Does anyone have any additional info on him? Thanks in advance Patti

Cathy, I left out a step of the process of Wm. Current's "limbo years", following the revolution. As I said, he was prob. in Newton in 1793. In Sept. 1796 he may have been in Newark, where he got a signed affidavit from 3 former Sussex Co. neighbors of his character and Loyalist activites, in order to apply for Crown lands in Upper Can. Was Newark a last hold-out for Loyalists? Why would they be congregating there when they couldn't return to their former homes? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Current's father-in-law, Joseph Lemon, had purchased such a large tract of land in Oxford Twp., maybe William Current just lived on his land with his family? William seems to have been 'in limbo' after the war was over, prior to Joseph Lemon's death in 1792, and may have even been prevented from returning to the county due to extreme anti-loyalist sentiments. In those circumstances, there was no use in Joseph Lemon bequething any of his land to his daughter, Esther, and her husband, William. I found Esther and William's 18=year-old son, Joseph Current, in New Town in 1793. His father was probably living there, too, though perhaps unofficially. Maybe I need to do more research in Newton. Sorry, Cathy DiPietro -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Current [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 6:36 PM To: Cathy & Vin DiPietro; [email protected] Subject: RE: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed Thank you very much, Cathy! So now, from this, I know the Lemons moved to Oxford in May, 1772. Do you happen to find any mention of William Current in the deed books? He was already married to the Lemon's daughter, Esther, and I believed they moved to Oxford at the same time, but have no proof. William may have forfeited his lands in Oxford sometime between 1783 and 1793, due to his Loyalist activities during the war. (In 1783 he was character witness for his neighbor, Peter Appleman's Loyalist claim, so must have been living at that time still, in Oxford. In 1793 his son Joseph was listed on a tax list in Newtown. Wm. Current wasn't mentioned, but I believe they were living in the same household, as Joseph didn't marry until 1800. Then, in 1796 the family moved together to Niagara Dist., Ont.) I would really like to find where his lands were, and in what year he bought them, and when he lost them. thank you so much for your help Marilyn Current -----Original Message----- From: Cathy & Vin DiPietro [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 3:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed Sussex County Deed Book E page 302 dated 14 Dec 1796 Elizabeth SWAYZE and Joshua SWAYZE, executors of the LWT (Last Will and Testament) of Isreal SWAYZE, dec'd, of Oxford to John & Michael LEMON of Fishing Creek Twp., Northumberland, PA Whereas Isreal SWAYZE by his bond datd 2 May 1772 bound himself to make deeds for lands in Oxford to the said Joseph LEMON and he deceased and left a LWT dated 19 Dec 1792 wherein he bequeathed to John & Michael LEMON equally between them the said lands. Hello, I'm looking for anyone who is famliar with the Kays family line from Newton NJ, i.e. anyone related or anyone who has the trees mapped out. More specifically, I'm looking for information on someone: ETHELDA JANE KAYS, b. January 16, 1916, Newton,(Sussex County),New Jersey; m. JOSEPH SCHWETZ, November 28, 1935, Frankford,New Jersey. Just to clarify, she is the daughter of John Kays and Dorcas Bonker. I am trying to find out if Ethelda is alive or deceased, and if she is deceased, what was the date of her death and burial location? I also have other questions, however this is my main priority. If anyone can provide any clues or information it would be most appreciated. Thank you very much, Brian Schwetz --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo!
