    1. Marriage of Abraham HARRIS and Sarah E. GARDNER, 1869
    2. I need the exact date of the marriage of Abraham HARRIS (son of James and Eveline HARRIS) and Sarah E. GARDNER (daughter of Harriet CRABTREE and Charles GARDNER). The record I have from Trenton is ink smeared but the year of 1869 is legible--I just don't know the month or the day. It took place in Newton, Sussex Co., NJ. Any help here would be appreciated. Perhaps a newspaper article of the marriage? Thank you. Mona in Richmond, IN

James Hance was elected elder about 181; JOHN LANCE was a member of session in 1826 and John LINDABERRY in 1827. If anyone knows any more on who the LANCE people were I would be very helpful. I think I do but i need more poof to pin them down. Laurence

    1. John Wortman 1778
    2. Charlene Talbot
    3. On 19 August 1778 the Council of Safety of the State of New Jersey charged John Woortman (Wortman) with high treason, but I don't know which county he came from. There were about 5 men named John Wortman in New Jersey at that time. "My" John Wortman was charged with being the head of a party of Tories who had agreed to waylay and capture a party of men and carry them to Col. Butler and the Indians. That seems like a long way to take prisoners unless they went by boat. Bergen County, Sussex or Hunterdon seem the most likely. I've looked various places but have found nothing. Does anyone have any ideas? Charlene in Oregon

    3. From "Old Sussex County Families" by Stickney. "Among the Huguenots who exiled themselves to America in 1660, were members of a family called Pettit. They originally settled near Newtown, LI. About 1742, six brothers; Jonathan, Amos, John Nathaniel, Isaac and Charles came to Sussex County, NJ. Jonathan Pettit settled in Hardwick; Amos in Brighton; John in Newton; Nathaniel in Newton; and Isaac and Charles in Newton. Isaac and Charles during the Revolutionary War were Royalist and moved to Canada." There are several pages of information. I do believe that the Sussex County Historical Society sells this book. 1. Wiltgus/Willgus Family; Jane Todd Wilgus Decker (1789-1851)
    2. Seek information about the life and ancestry of my great-great-grandmother Jane Todd Wilgus (1789-1851). In about 1822, she married Isaac Decker (1785/86-1836). By this marriage, she had six children, born between 1823 and 1832. Isaac Decker was previously married (in 1809 in Sussex County) to Hannah McCollum (1790-1820), and there were four children by that marriage, born between 1811 and 1819. Isaac and Hannah Decker and the first two of their children moved to Island Creek Township, Jefferson County, OH, where two more children were born and where Hannah died in 1820. The use of the name "Jane Todd Wilgus" implies that she may have had a marriage before her marriage to Isaac Decker. It is possible that this woman named Jane was born in Sussex County, NJ, Orange County, NY or Pike County, PA, near where Isaac Decker may have been born and/or raised, and it is possible that Isaac Decker returned to NJ, NY or PA to marry her. It is also possible that this woman named Jane was living in Jefferson, Harrison, or Guernsey County, OH when Isaac Decker met and married her. Recent research at the Harrison County Courthouse in Cadiz, OH lists two marriages of persons with names of interest to this query: Aug 5, 1831: James Todd and Mary Smith married. Nov. 15, 1827: George Todd and Jane Williamson married. Does anyone have information about this Jane Todd Wilgus or members of any Todd or Wilgus/Willgus family that might be related to her? The stories appear in their original form, although some have been edited for length. 100 YEARS AGO July 14, 1904 SPARTA Henry RICHARDS has painted the tenant house occupied by Amos BONKER near the depot. James B. TITMAN, who has been confined to the house by a long illness, is again able to be out, we are pleased to note. Malta, Samuel KAY's cat, whose abiding place is at the depot, is the mother of five kittens which are being admired by many people. Mrs. James BAYLES has added a large porch on two sides of her house near Mahola, and has named the place Fair View cottage. Thelda FOLK, the little daughter of Mrs. Bell FOLK, who has been an invalid a long time, has improved enough to walk about the village. Southerland MILLER, who has taken the position of organist at the Presbyterian Church for several summers, is at the Everett House for a short vacation. The steamer Alametcong now makes three trips between Woodport and Hopatcong station, thus people leaving Sparta at six o'clock in the morning can reach New York at nine o'clock. Sparta is short on borders at least one half this summer. It is believed the deficiency is caused by the attraction of the St. Louis Exposition. This time last year every hotel in the village was full. George WILLIAMS , who has been right-hand man for Dr. ANDRES for several years, has gone in business for himself. George runs a hack from the depot, and delivers goods for the National express company. ANDOVER G.Greer YOUNG is not spending part of his vacation with his father, Lewis S. YOUNG, who is superintendent of a large farm situated near the city of Boston. John R. SEELY, who for several years was the efficient station agent at the L & H depot, has secured a like position with a railroad company at Pen Argyl., Pa. He has not fully decided as to the time of the removal of his family to the place of his new field of labor. A pleasant party of about thirty friends and neighbors were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. G.S. JACOBSON on the spacious lawn of their country residence Tedmont, on the evening of July 4th . A select display of fireworks were witnessed, together with the ascension of some fine balloons. Before separating, the company grouped themselves about the porch with Mr. JACOBSON, who is an accomplished pianist, at the piano, rendered some national airs. All agreed to having spent a very pleasant evening. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson are entertaining friends from New York City and elsewhere. 2. An ancestor of mine, Abraham Harris was a Methodist Clergyman in Asbury, Warren Co., NJ, 1880 census. He was married to Sarah Gardner possibly of Sussex Co. (Sarah was daughter of Harriet CRABTREE of Sussex County and Charles GARDNER.) In the 1900 census, Abraham HARRIS is listed as "clergyman" in New Providence, Union Co., NJ. He died before 1910. What Methodist Church might have been active in New Providence in 1900? Is it still active? Address? Abraham may have died here and buried in New Providence? Abraham's widow, Sarah is listed in 1910 and 1920 censuses, residing in Dover, Morris Co., NJ. They had one daughter, Harriet ("Hattie") who married a HUNTER and they were divorced after the birth of three children. 1. Re: [NJSUSSEX-L] re: railroad ceremony
    2. Interesting about the "train wreck" re-enactment. Reading through the Sussex Register and Sussex Independent newspapers from the late 1800's, I had recently been noting all the "railroad accidents" that seemed part of the 1800's New Jerseyian's life. I recently was sent a portion of a front-page news article regarding an inquest that my family was involved with in Sussex County because of "train travel." In January of 1880 my G-Aunt Elmira Hamler was called to the witness stand because her toddler had been placed in the care of the older children and, when the toddler walked off, he was struck dead by a Sussex County train. I must say that, though by today's standards she might have been taken to jail for being "delinquent" in the care of her child (she was visiting a neighbor), the newspaper story about the inquest showed only great sympathy for her as a mother, never a shred of blame for her child-care capabilities. My Dad's older half-sibling who he had never met, was also mentioned in a news story because the small child had wandered off from the mother's care and drowned in a Sussex County river, near some falls. Even my Uncle, who I never met because he died 2 years before I was born, met his death in 1948 when he tried to outrun the night train as was his habit when he drove to his job on an Indian reservation in Morris County. Lots of tragedies with this advancement in travel technology. Kathleen Hamler Purchase Phoenix, AZ. [email protected]
