Patrice & All, West Jersey land records were filed in Burlington, East Jersey deeds were sent to Perth Amboy/Elizabethtown. Prior to 1753, the area was briefly part of Morris county, prior to that it was considered Hunterdon. Check early Dutch Reformed church records as they were the only organized group at the time, many of these records are in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly series. Early deacons traveled around their areas on horseback, visiting local areas of worship only every month or so. From Nancy Pascal's website http://www.gate.net/~pascalfl there is a link to Pat Berenger's transcription of early NJ marriages - this series and the complete NJ will abstracts series are available from 1630-1817 in a NJ State Archives series available at most major NJ genealogical libraries (Sussex main in Frankford, Morris Free in Morristown, etc.) Hope this helps, Cathy DiPietro --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to make any suggestions with regard to how to search for someone from Sandyston, Sussex County prior to 1753 and even when it was a part of West Jersey. Thanks for your time. Patrice Houck Schadt

A John Williams appears on tax lists for Hardyston in 1773, 1774, and 1780. Does anyone have more information on who this John Williams was? I am looking for the John Williams b. 1720 in Bristol, Old England, who married Lea Decker in 1742 (RDC Walpack). In 1750 he obtained a warrant for 50 acres in Upper Smithfield, PA (across the river). In 1753 he sold this land to his father in law Broer Decker. This is my last record for his residence. In 1755 his son Ezekiel was christened (RDC Walpack records). It is possible that when he sold his land in Upper Smithfield, he moved across the river to Sussex Co., but I could be wrong. In 1777, his son Ezekiel's Oath of Allegiance is in Northampton Co., PA, records. Ezekiel served in the revolution in a Northampton Co., PA, unit. About 1783, Ezekiel Williams married Lydia Westbrook. I have not found their marriage record in PA. I'm wondering if Ezekiel Williams married Lydia Westbrook in NJ -- her mother and step-father lived in Sandystone-Walpack Center area. Any help on Ezekiel's father John Williams would be appreciated. I would like to know if he moved to Sussex Co. after 1753 and if he is the same man on the 1773, 1774, and 1780 Hardyston tax lists. (A problem: John also had a son John Williams, Jr. who could be the man on the tax list as John Jr. was born in 1746.) Helen Graves
Widow Catherine Westbrook married Nicholas Emmens in 1765. When Nicholas Emmens wrote his will in May 1791, he referred to his wife as still living. He died within weeks. Does anyone have a death date for his widow Catherine (Westbrook) Emmens? Did she remain living on their farm with their son Daniel? Helen Graves in Calif.
Roz and All, From Snell's "History of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey" c. 1881 page 351 McAfee Valley The earliest purchaser at this point, so far as can be learned, was John Wilkins, who was for a long period possessor of a tract of which 2.40 acres was conveyed to Ebenezer Townsend in 1826. There still remained 7.71 acres, which was purchased by Samuel McAfee, who conducted a blacksmith and wagon shop, and was for a time the oracle of the neighborhood; from him the hamlet derived its name. Mr. McAfee sold to Robert Martin and wife, who conveyed to William Benjamin, from whom the property was transferred to Stephen Smith, who was for a brief time the owner, and later sold to William Simpson, who in turn conveyed to William Simpson Jr., the present (1881) owner. From other research I did, Mr. Samuel McAfee only lived in the area still called McAfee for approximately ten years. This is probably the same Samuel McAfee who was born 1792-1796 and married circa 1833 to Hannah Riggs according to the LDS IGI information. Ora C. SIMPSON was united in marriage, June 30, 1885 to Magdalena B. MABEE, a native o Warwick, Orange County, New York State, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (BODINE) MABEE, of that community. To this union was born son, Harold M., whose birth occurred at McAfee in 1886 Does anyone know if this Mabee is related to Mary E. Mabee, last wife of Abner B. Hamler (11 Nov 1843NJ - 02 Apr 1884Sussex Co., NJ)? Abner was a son of David and Amy (Drake) Hamler. David was born in 1809 & Amy was born in 1822. Abner was married twice. First he was married to Mary Jane Willoughby which was her married name; she was from NC and her Rebel husband had deserted her and their daughter Nancy. Abner married the deserted wife on his way back to New Jersey from fighting in the south in the Civil War. He also brought with him Mary Jane's daughter Nancy Willoughby who became Nancy Hamler in New Jersey. After 1870, Mary Jane Hamler died and Abner married Mary E. Mabee who collected his Civil War Pension when Abner died in 1884. David and Charles Hamler were Mary Jane and Abner's sons, with David becoming their only living son after Charles died in his teens. With Abner, Mary E. (Mabee) Hamler had a daughter, Leonora E. Hamler. When Abner and Mary Jane's locally well-known son David died in 1922, his obituary incorrectly called Mary E. Mabee his mother. The murderer has been caught. Supposedly, he wasn't going to kill the woman to begin with, for some reason the woman freaked out when he knocked on her back door, and whacked him over the head with the tv tray. In self defence the man hit her 2 times, realized what he did and ran out the front door. He was arrested Wednesday Night.
Northwestern New Jersey" by A. Van Doren Honeyman (1927) page 53: ORA C. SIMPSON - As county clerk of Sussex County, and now as justice of the peace for the town of Newton, New Jersey, Ora C. SIMPSON has rendered many years of invaluable service to his fellow-citizens, and is one of the most popular and well known men of this section. William SIMPSON, father of Newton's capable public official, was a native of Sussex County, where he was born in the 1832, son of William and Nancy (SMITH) SIMPSON, the latter having been a daughter of Nathan SMITH, and granddaughter of William SMITH, who married Caroline HAMILTON, a daughter of General Benjamin HAMILTON and a sister to Colonel Robert HAMILTON, who was a member of Congress from the Fourth District of New Jersey. William SMITH, who was an influential factor in the councils of the Democratic party, was a member of the State Legislature from the year 1856 until 1858 inclusive, was born in Sussex County and was a successful farmer of that locality. William SIMPSON operated a large general merchandising business from 1856 until April 11, 1890, the time of his demise, and was, as has since been his son, Ora C., most prominent in local political affairs, having been chosen to occupy every public office within the bestowal power of his fellows. He married Frances A. SMITH, a native of Sussex County, where she was born in the year 1833. Ora C. SIMPSON, son of William and Frances A. (SMITH) SIMPSON, was born in McAfee, Sussex County, New Jersey, on December 1, 1854. Until he had attained the age of fourteen years, the lad was a student in the schools of this district. Following completion of his education, he became associated with the merchandising establishment of which his father was proprietor, and served therein with the duties of clerk until he was in the twenty-first year of his age, at which time he acquired a financial interest in the business, which was thereafter conducted under the firm style of William Simpson & Son, dealers in general merchandise. Subsequent to the death of his father, Mr. SIMPSON continued to operate the business as an individual proprietor until 1892, in which year he accepted the proffered office of county clerk of Sussex County for a term of five years. So efficient was he in the discharge of his official duties that Mr. SIMPSON was re-elected, in 1897, to a second term, and afterward for one additional term, having occupied that important office, in all for a period of fifteen years until 1907. In 1921 the people of Newton having decided to secure the presence in office of a new justice of the peace, Mr. Simpson was requested to become a candidate for election therefor, which he accordingly was, and the voters of the community placed him in the office, to which he has continuoulsy been re-elected to the present time (1927). Mr. Simpson is widely recognized outside of his offical achievements, being the owner of much valuable property in Newton and vincinity, including his large residence, the aforementioned store, a hotel and business block at McAfee, also various other structures at Newton or elsewhere. Taking great pleasure in the social communication with his many friends, Mr. Simpson is a member of Harmony Lodge, No. 8, Free and Accepted Masons; Baldwin Chapter, No. 17, Royal Arch Masons; DeMolay Commandery, Knights Templar; Salaam Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Ora C. SIMPSON was united in marriage, June 30, 1885 to Magdalena B. MABEE, a native o Warwick, Orange County, New York State, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (BODINE) MABEE, of that community. To this union was born son, Harold M., whose birth occurred at McAfee in 1886. He was educated in the Newton public schools, Newton English and Classical School, Princeton and Lehigh Universities, studied law under the able preceptorship of the Hon. Theodore SIMONSON of Newton, and was admitted to practice at the bar of Sussex County in 1913. He has since been in active practice; the other child of Ora C. and Magdalena B. (MABEE) SIMPSON is a daughter, Elizabeth B., wife of Raymond B. HOTCHKISS, living in New York City. Mrs. SIMPSON is prominent in the affairs of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mr. SIMPSON maintains a hospitable residen at No. 15 Halsted Street, and his offices are situated at No. 116 Spring Street, Newton, New Jersey. I am sorry if you are getting this message as a duplicate I tried sending it earlier and it got kicked back to me so sending it again in case it did not go through. Hello All: Does anyone know when Ora Simpson served as County Clerk of Sussex County.??? Ora was a cousin and he lived in Newton. The 1900 Census mentions he was County Clerk so it would have to be around the turn of the last century. Looking to find when so i can look in the Sussex papers for info about him like election results or old political ads. If anyone knows when he died would be great too as i am going to Trenton on Friday to the State Archives and would like to get his death certificate. A place of burial would be of great help too. Thanks, JIM BOOTH
Many thanks to a couple of you who looked up the possible Fullington-Hamler marriage in Howard Case's "Sussex County Marriages." Though it wasn't there, my gratitude is endless. Kathleen
I am hoping to find anyone with an interest in researching the family of Jacob Myers of Walpack. I have done quite a bit of work on this family, but have been less than successfull in identifying Jacob's mother, and the parentage of his wife, Sarah Cortright. I am hoping that someone else with a like interest may have a clue that may jump start my research on this family. Thank you for your time. Patrice Houck Schadt
I am really pulling at straws here but is anyone aware of a A. H. Fullington who was head-of-household in 1840 Census, living at that time in Hinesburgh, Chittenden Co., VT? I am hoping that he is related to the (--?--) Fullington whose wife Jehila/Gehila (Hamler) Fullington, b. 1830, was listed in the Sussex Co., NJ Census living with her father William H. Hamler in Frankford twp., Sussex Co. in 1850. She had her son, the under-one year old Aaron W. Fullington, living with her in her father's house. (I am going on the surmise that Aaron W. Fullington was named for his Grandfather, from the "A." in "A.H. Fullington.") I am trying to find out who Jehila's "Fullington" husband was. Was he deceased by Census of 1850? Or if he was alive, who and where was he? What was his name? Does anyone have access to Howard Case's "Sussex County New Jersey Marriages"? (It's a Reference book at the library.) Is the Hamler-Fullington marriage listed in there? Would appreciate any help. Kathleen [email protected]

Hello Fellow Sussex Researchers: Just found about and subscribed to this list. Look forward to exchanging info with all of you researching the families of Sussex County, N. J. I have extensive roots in the county with most of my relations living in and around Hamburg-Hardyston-Vernon areas. My surname Booth in Sussex goes back to my great great great grandfather Enos R. Booth who apparently had Connecticut ties who moved in to Sussex before 1838, he married Phoebe Welch daughter of Conrad Welch and Mary "Polly" Simpson in June of 1838 in Hamburg Baptist Church. He died around 1855 and am having a very terrible time find anything about him. He is listed in the 1850 Census and his wife is listed alone in the 1855 NJ Census and she is listed as "widow" in 1860. I think Enos died sometime around 1854-1855. Could be buried in Hamburg Baptist Cemetery either in an unmarked grave or in the far back over the hill which is not maintained and is too overgrown to access. I then descend from Enos' son George Seymour Booth who married Abbie Delia Haight in 1877. They had a total of 13 children in which 10 lived to adulthood. If anyone is interested in this line further i can send further info. If anyone knows anything about this family or has come across an Enos Booth in their research in Sussex please let me know. Been actively working the past couple of days on my Simpson roots which i just made a breakthrough on. As mentioned above Conrad Welch married Mary Polly Simpson. She was the daughter of Joseph Simpson who was the grandson of Henry Simson who came to the McAfee Valley from Basking Ridge. Just found this info out while researching at the Sussex Historical Society Friday. Been spending the weekend learning all i can through the census records and other online research. Didnt realize how prominent the family was. Many of my Simpsons served in office as did other distant cousins through that line. Most notable Ora Simpson who served as County Clerk (years of service unknown) and Smith Simpson was Town Clerk of Vernon. He apparently also owned the old National Hotel on Orchard Street in Hamburg Boro. Definitely would be interested in connecting with those of you researching the Simpsons.
