    1. List of 78 people killed in 1755
    2. Helen Graves
    3. In a section of her book "That Ancient Trail", Amelia Stickney Decker includes information on incidents, such as Indian raids, which occurred during the French-Indian War. One of her references is: "A List of Persons killed in the latter part of December 1755, numbered 78 in the Pennsylvania Minisink, among them one Gilbert Van Camp and family. (N.J.A., V. 19, 569)." I am assuming that her source for the "List of 78 Killed in Dec 1755" was New Jersey Archives, Vol.. 19, pg 569. Am I correct? Is there anyone on the list who can help me locate this list of 78 person killed in Dec 1755 in the Pennsylvania Minisink? She also states: "In December 1755, the country above Easton for 50 miles was mostly evacuated, excepting the neighborhood of the Depui five families." It is likely that the Pennsylvania Minisink settlers fled across the river to Sussex Co. and found shelter in the various forts and fortified houses of relatives and friends. I would like to find out the names of the 78 persons who were killed. Helen Graves

    3. Does anyone have a copy of this book: "Abstracts of Bucks Co., PA, Land Records 1711-1749" ? If so, would you check the index for the surname DENMARK and SWARTWOUT or derivations in spelling like Swarthoot, Swarthout, etc? I am researching Swartwout and other Minisink families who settled early in Upper Smithfield , from Stroudsberg to Milford prior to the creation of Northampton Co. in 1752. Helen Graves

    1. Remember to Visit Ft. Wayne
    2. HI Friends!! Just a friendly reminder to searchers in the midwest. The Allen County Public Library is a MUST DO trip when researching. The collections at the ACPL are second only to the holdings of the genealogy library in Utah. Located currently in downtown Fort Wayne Indiana the genealogy section of the library takes both wings of the third floor. A friendly staff is there to point you in the direction that you are looking for. Remember they are NOT there to search for you just assisting where items are located. Besides you know, YOU want to find great grandmother Bessie, not some one else. There are hotels with in walking distance as well as a parking garage close by. There are sports teams, cultural events, and other local museums to let you clear your mind and gather thoughts in the evening. Fort Wayne is in the Northeast portion of the state of Indiana and easily accessed from the interstate system via I-69. I just spent my lunch hour there on Friday and searched the 1895 & 1905 State Census of New Jersey and filled some much needed time frames to narrow down looking for a death date for a great grandfather on my tree. No,.. I am not a plant, and I'm not getting paid for this, just as there are always new searchers coming aboard the good ship genealogy-search, that any extra info for search places and tips is in the words of "Martha" "It's a good thing". Visit the librarys web site for info and a look at the holdings available to search. Hope you find that missing data Respectfully Keith W Brown Indianapolis IN http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/r/o/Keith-W-Brown

    2. Helen Graves
    3. A Daniel Decker purchased land in Sussex Co. near the Delaware River and about 1756 started operating a ferry at a big bend in the river according to a mention in a history book, but which Daniel Decker started the ferry was not identified. I want to be sure I have identified the correct Daniel Decker, as there were several living at this time period. Was this the Daniel Decker who married Blandina Vredenburgh in 1756? Anyone on the list researching Daniel Decker and Blandina Vredenburgh who have a copy of his deed or who may know more specifically where his land was located? Many thanks, Helen Graves

    1. James CRABTREE
    2. I need a bit of help and hope that someone can help me. James H. CRABTREE (1824-1879), son of William CRABTREE and Elizabeth McCONNELL, married Matilda Jane ("Jennie") COOPER, 1871 in Passaic Co., NJ. Some records give their place of marriage as Morris Co., NJ. There were four children (1900 census records) but only two children living: Eugene CRABTREE (1873-1944) and Irene CRABTREE (1877--?) Both James and Matilda are buried in Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery, West Milford Twp., Passaic, NJ. But in 1879, James died in Roxbury, Morris, NJ. The 1900 and 1910 census records record Matilda's residence as Jefferson Twp., Morris Co., NJ. A death notice in the NJHerald and Sussex Democrat, Thurs., June 6, 1873, p. 2: notes that Eddie H. CRABTREE, son of James Crabtree, died, aged 4 months and 10 days in Snufftown, NJ. Date of death was May twenty something. The person who sent this info stated that the date of death was illegible. According to this notice, Eddie H. was born Jan. 1873. Eugene CRABTREE (Noted above) was born 13 January 1873. Perhaps Eddie and Eugene were twins? Can anyone prove this fact--and that Eddie was indeed, the son of James H and Matilda CRABTREE? Does anyone have information as to the date of "Jennie's" death and place of death? Her parentage? Irene CRABTREE (b. 1877) married William S. SMITH about 1902. Can anyone add any information to this couple? Any information would be most welcome. Thank you. Mona, Richmond, IN

    1. HOUGH and Breaking Brick Walls
    2. Cathy & Vin DiPietro
    3. Marilyn, Be very liberal and imaginative with early spellings of Hough. For example, there are two marriages listed in Howard Case's "Sussex County, New Jersey Marriages" which might be yours: 05 Feb 1820 - Houk, David to Mary Ferguson 01 Apr 1801 - Houck, William (of Knowlton) to Terry Perbasco If you can find a copy, Kenn Stryker-Rodda's INDEX for the GMNJ is also a valuable resource. I've found several surprising surname variations in his index leading to important breakthroughs. Consider the country of origin - perhaps your HOUGH is formerly Dutch? Try checking Houghating (Hogaling, Hogdeling, Houghtaling, Hooghteeling, etc.) or perhaps even VanDerHough in case the name was shortened. Did an important "missing link" document for your line get misfiled under Nough because of a clerk's hideous handwriting? Have you traced neighbors with more consistently spelled surnames who intermarried with your ancestors? Sometimes they can lead back to breakthrough. Try adding the feminine ending "-in" to the last name when checking indexes. Creativity counts when facing research brick walls. Best of luck to you on your search, Cathy DiPietro

    1. John HOUGH, et al
    2. Hello Kathleen, thanks for the tips, I appreciate them. I agree that John Hough may have been a Palentine. I have handwritten histories of the family written by my grandfather in 1898 but unfortunately none of it prior to 1800 seems to be true. Hopefully some day soon I'll be able to do some serious research. Thanks again, Marilyn In a message dated 2/16/2005 10:05:13 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: An early NJ source that has been helpful to me has been an article in the Genealogical Society of New Jersey's magazine, vol. 33, Jan/April, Numbers 1/2, **1958** article:"The Janeway Account Books 1735-1746" by Kenn Stryer-Rodda. The Janeway Account Books are for a businessman whose last name was Janeway whose book of accounts from the mid-1700's still exist. The account books were for the locals of Somerset County, NJ but if your family was "old New Jersey" (as mine is) you might find that your Sussex County family began in Somerset County, only a couple counties away. Sorry, but I don't do Look-Ups from this magazine first of all, because all I have is a copy of the Janeway Account books article, and then because it is laid out in such a way that there is a primary name and then there are other names that connected with the primary name which are not alphabetized. You can simply write Dorothy Stratford c/o the Genealogical Society of New Jersey-- or simply the Genealogical Society of New Jersey-- and ask for a copy of the article (at least that's what I did. Be sure to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope). I'd try Dorothy first; I noticed that the GSNJ does not list the Janeway article in it's available back-issues. The mailing address for the Genealogical Society of New Jersey is PO Box 1476, Trenton, NJ 08607-1476. Dorothy is the corresponding secretary for the Society. Also, if your ancestor was a Palatine-- which I suspect "John Hough" might be--this book is helpful, "More Palatine Families: Some Immigrants to the Middle Colonies 1717-1776 and their European Origins plus New Discoveries on German Families Who arrives in Colonial New York in 1710" (two books which sometimes can be found as one book) by Henry Z. Jones, Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists, Universal City, CA 1991. If you have a library card, you can get it through Inter-Library loan. At least my library was able to get it for me for three weeks. Also you can get a free copy of the genealogical catalogue of books from Heritage Books and Willowbend Books. Check them online at _http://www.heritagebooks.com/_ (http://www.heritagebooks.com/) Hope this was helpful. I know how frustrating doing research in the early 1800's and 1700's can be! Anna married first George RHODES (1797-1842), son of Charles RHODES, Jr. and Catherine WINTERMUTE, in Sussex Co. and then they moved to Corning, Steuben Co., NY where their last three children were born. After George's death (he is buried in Old Presbyterian Cemetery, Corning, NY), Anna married Henry L. GOODSELL in 1869 and who died about 1879. Someone has noted from a published genealogy that Anna died Jan. 1881. Can anyone help me prove when she died and where she is buried?
