I have available the messages and lookups that the Harlingen Reformed Church has sent to people over the years and I've been posting the info, The information was researched by the church secretary from the original books, the earliest of which are in the original Dutch but have been translated. I am NOT doing lookups because I don't have the books - just the secretary's files of answered letters. This is not meant to be a "positive" record - just a hint of where you might find the information you're seeking. If you find it useful - PLEASE let me know. It takes a lot of time to type all this!!! --------------71395D03B1896FA4B24000D7 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <NJHUNTER-L-request@rootsweb.com> Received: from bl-11.rootsweb.com ([204.212.38.27]) by webserver.ibs-inc.com (Post.Office MTA v3.1.2 release (PO205-101c) ID# 0-42569U100L2S100) with ESMTP id AAA330 for <Thistledew@BelleMeadInternet.com>; Tue, 21 Sep 1999 13:45:54 -0400 Received: (from slist@localhost) by bl-11.rootsweb.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA17646; Tue, 21 Sep 1999 10:41:15 -0700 (PDT) Resent-Date: Tue, 21 Sep 1999 10:41:15 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <37E7C223.3827F33E@BelleMeadInternet.com> Date: Tue, 21 Sep 1999 13:36:35 -0400 From: Sharon / Harry Colquhoun <Thistledew@BelleMeadInternet.com> X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Old-To: lmuessig <lmuessig@ptdprolog.net> Old-CC: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NJHUNTER] Harlingen Church: HAGAMAN References: <37E78C72.E57F46C1@BelleMeadInternet.com> <000f01bf044c$cf1eefc0$6911bacc@leda> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Resent-Message-ID: <DIjyXC.A.kTE.6M853@bl-11.rootsweb.com> To: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com Resent-From: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com X-Mailing-List: <NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com> archive/latest/1697 X-Loop: NJHUNTER-L@rootsweb.com Precedence: list Resent-Sender: NJHUNTER-L-request@rootsweb.com X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 Linda, from The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Vol. 15, No. 1, January 1940: The Harlingen Reformed Dutch Church was organized May 18, 1727 under the direction of Rev. Henricus Coens of Aquackanonck, and a small wooden building was erected by the congregation at present day Belle Mead, where the old cemetery established there is still in use. Rev. Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen at that time served the several outlying congregations of central New Jersey, and in 1729 Harlingen was added to his charge. This extended and partially unsettled circuit was something of a strain upon the reverend's energies, and only occasional services were held in the small, remote congregation of Harlingen. During the Coetus-Conferentie contraversy, which for a number of years rocked the Dutch church in America, a rift developed in the Harlingen congregation. In consequence, one group withdrew and erected its own building (1750-52) on the site of the present church. Upon the eventual reunion of the two parties, the old church was abandoned, and in due time demolished. In 1803 a new building took the place of the second one, which had become somewhat dilapidated. The present church structure was erected in 1851. Linda, the present church is on the left side of the road when you are headed north from Princeton on the way to Somerville. If you continue a couple of miles past the church, over the railroad and make the bend to the right (noticeable on any New Jersey map as a wild curve) the original site/cemetery are on the left. There was at least one HOF/BERKA baptism that was posted earlier. Sorry, but I don't have the time to do lookups nor do I have the books. They're locked in a fireproof safe! I also have the additional handicap of not being able to read the original Dutch...... sorry. I'm waiting for a sunny day so I can take a good picture of the church and the cemetery. When I have one I'll post a note and you can email me privately and I'll be glad to scan it to you. I did that with Solebury Friends Meeting in New Hope and it came out great.
