Hi: I'm new to the list. I am looking for the surnames LAFLER, COULE and DARCH in Hillsborough township. Court Coule died in 1755 leaving a will. He owned land in both Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. He had daughters: Ann who married Michael Miers and Margaret who married Peter Laffnard. Court's wife was Coartrout?. There may have been other children but they were not mentioned in the will. Court was a yeoman. His son in law Peter Laffnard was an executor of the will and signed it as Peter Lafler. Peter Lafler died in Hillsborough township in 1786. He left no will -Letter of Administration and there was an inventory. He had sons: Jacob, Peter, Coonrod and possibly John. Coonrod married Agnes DARCH in 1759. He was in the American Revolution. He had a large family. They moved to northeastern Pennsylvania and then into Ontario County, NY. Some of the family moved to Yates and Steuben Counties. Laflers to this day live in that area. Believe that is son Jacob went to the Cleveland area and had son, Issac who married Diantha Thorpe. Also believe that John Lafler married Mary Tilton and stayed in Somerset Co. My great-grandfather, Harvey Lafler was the son of Isaac Lafler. He was born in Cleveland and died in Hancock County, IL 1870. His brother and two sisters moved to Michigan. Another sister moved to IL and later to Nebraska. I'm looking for these names - LAFLER, COULE and DARCH in Somerset County. Can anyone help me? Lafler may be spelled Laffler, Lefler, Leflar, Leffler, etc. Coule is probably Kuhl and may now be Cool. Thanks. Annie Lloyd Los Angeles
Joseph and family were early settlers in Perry Co., Ohio and its county seat of Somerset. Thinking that there might be a connection and knowing that there were early Petty members in your county, I thought I would send a query your way. I can find no link to this man's parentage. They lived in Sussex/Warren County area prior to their move to Ohio in 1808. Sons were John, Moses, Jacob, Joseph, and Aaron. Daughters were Margaret, Mary Ann, Sarah, Susannah and Elizabeth. Did he have any roots in Somerset Co.? I suspect a link with the Long Island group of Pettys because of rarer Christian names for children and grandchildren, i.e. Ralph, Lucas, Moses. .Did any of the L. I.group pass through there? Any leads appreciated. Marjory A. Austen MAPPAusten@aol.com
I have had no success posting to Somerset. Not your fault. But they are there. It is published by EGLE in Pennsylvania Genealogies... Still, I was leafing through the book, put out by The Welcome Society, "Passengers and Ships" by Shepphard. In the Chapter, Early Shipping to the Jersey Shore of the Delware, it mentions two James NEVILLs. I am having a hard time making it out, but, apparently, aboard the GRIFFIN, arrived james Nevill. There was also a ship the WILLING MIND with a James Nevill. These appear to have arrived in the mid to late 1670's... The former is known to have been going to NJ, the latter, not known to have intended to go there, but apparently could have. If you know of any Nevill(e)'s in Somerset or surrounding areas, please contact me at vsummers@nrao.edu as I am going to unsubscribe to add to NAME mailling lists for a new approach... Thanks, Vincent E. Summers (Born Camden County)

She married Cornelius Vermeule on Feb 14, 1781 and between them, they had ten children. The only one I've managed to discover was Judith Middagh Vermeule. Her father, Cornelius was born June 30, 1757 and that's about all I have been able to find out. Good Luck! William Smalley Cadmus diamondsharp@cheshire.net

I know that Neville's were in Somerset. But I also know my AYRES were Pennsylvania AYRES. Further, most all NJ Ayres are not connected to my line. But it is a small chance that my Ayres line *did* find one member at least temporarily in NJ. Anyone have anything on this? Dr. William Henry EGLE's PENNSYLVANIA GENEALOGIES says, of my Hiram AYRES of PA, "Hiram Ayres m., secondly, January 12, 1865, in Holmesburg, Phladelphia county, ELIZABETH NEVILLE, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Neville, of Somerset county, New Jersey, who survived her husband, and d. May 2, 1873; buried in the old Pennepack church cemetery, near Bustleton." Thank you, Vincent E. Summers Seeking AYRES and NEVILLE in Somerset Co., NJ
I have hit a brick wall with my great-grandfather, Charles REED. I know he was born in 1814 in New Jersey, possibly Allentown. I have been unable to connect him to any parents or siblings. In the 1830 Census, I found a Charles REED in Somerset County, Warren Township with a family of 12 people, one of whom is in the 15-20 years old age group, which would be right for my Charles. Can anyone help me with suggestions on finding out more about the Charles listed in the Census? All help is greatly appreciated. Robert L. Reed The Woodlands, TX

David French Jr. was the son of David French Sr., (Rev War Soldier) and Sarah Wilcox. Who was David French Sr.'s father. Some say it was Robert and some say it was a John. Does anybody know for sure? Sure would appreciate information you would share with me. Please contact me at: rclaw@mc.net By the way, all those related directly to David French Jr. & Margaret Noe, and those related to their son Phineas Mundy French and his 2nd wife Sarah Lees, I have photographs of these two couples. To all; I am researching the VAN DUYN family of Somerset County. Denys Van Duyn, second son of the immigrant Gerret Cornelisse Van Duyn, settled The Raritan in the early 1700s along with many others from New Utrecht and environs. Many descendant branches of his family participated in the western migration to Pennsylvania, New York State, Ohio and beyond. Some descendants still live in Somerset County and surrounding areas. Many of the old Dutch families who migrated to central Jersey from New York are connected to this Van Duyn family including ... Anderson Buys Coesat Dumont Emans Fulkerson Low Montfort Noortstrant Polhemus Rapalje Roberson Sebring Smock Staats Stoothoff Stryker Tunison Van Cleef Viele Vanderbilt Van Nest Wyckoff Williamson I am interested in filling in gaps in my compilation of cousins from central Jersey. If you wish to exchange data, please write. Dick Van Duyne

Jacob Fulkerson Howdy, All, I'm looking for information on the life, spouse and children of Jacob FULKERSON, who was baptized 29 Jul 1739 at the Raritan DRC in Somerset Co. He was the son of Joseph FULKERSON and Aeltje RAPALJE.
