    3. I recently discovered a set of 1873 magazines from Somerset County called "Our Home". It had a biographical article about the Rev. Gabriel Ludlow (23 Apr 1797-19 Feb 1878), who was pastor of the Nashanic Reformed Dutch Church. The article a lot about his career but didn't give much family information. I was interested because he had performed the marriage ceremony of one of my Rappleyea connections in 1822. I found from another source that Rev. Ludlow was married to Susan Rapalje (16 Aug 1798-25 Feb 1863). Does anyone know who her parents were or where she fits into the Rapalje family tree? 3. To Debbie, Just read your posting on the Warren County History. Does it by any chance mention Levi Coon, Margaret Compton or Sarah Coon their daughter? Also is there any reference to a John Turner who married Sarah Coon. Levi and Margaret are both buried in Mt.Bethel Cem. Apparently all the Coons, Comptons and Turners lived in that area but the churches don't have any records - neither do the courthouse, libraries, etc. Levi b1750 m 1778 d 1826. Margaret b 1760, d 1844, Sarah b 1785. Don't know what dates your book covers but would surely appreciate a lookup if these dates are in your book. Thank you. Cleona

    1. Charity Smith Bird Coddington
    2. Hi--I have the booklet, Villages at the Crossroads, History of Warren Twp. 1806-1976. In it there is reference to Isaiah Coddington and his family on page 24: Teh Coddington family in Warren was descended from Isaac who was born about 1720 in Woodbridge. He married Sarah Giddes and tehy had John, Benjamin, Archibald, and Abby. John settled on a 122 acre farm on the corner of Liberty Corner and Mt. Horeb Roads and left teh property to his sons George W., Reuben, John, and Bartholemew when he died in 1844. Reuben it is said built the present house in 1873 which is now owned by the Eagans. Next door on the farm owned by Lester and Lora Coddington lived Archibald "Corrington" or Coddington, son of Isaac, who was born in 1756 and served as a private in the militia. When he died his sons Ben and William stayed on to farm the 100 acre property. The place came to Lester and Lora from their father John Wesley Coddington who bought it from his uncle William A. John Wesley's father was Isaiah Coddington (a son of Archibald) who acquired patches of property on both sides of Mt. Horeb Rd. and built the house recently owned by John and Barbara Evans. The house is one room deep and two rooms wide and some of the beams appear to be from another structure: one is even charred. Isaiah was a blacksmith and his brother Archibald, Jr. learned this trade from him before buying the Green Valley Mill in 1861 in Watchung. Their brother David, born Nov 30, 1797 at Mt. Horeb, was 'converted while praying alone in a barn: at age twenty and became an enthusiastic Methodist and licensed exhorter. Teh Methodists were and active group in the Mt. Horeb area and it is daid the first class met in a house a mile southeast of Martinsville as early as 1770. By 1820 services were being held in teh homes of John Smith, David Ruckman, Rachel Adams and Benjamin Coddington. That same year REv. Bartholomew Weed organized a class of eight persons who met in Ben Coddington's home 1 1/2 miles east of the present church. The only references to John Smith are that he was a corporal in the Continental Army. Born 1745 and died 1837. Burial info below. As for your Coons and Van Tuyls I have only a little. Pg 26 There is a cemetery next to the Mt. Horeb church and a small one behind the Tunnison house (now Cramer's) where Archibald Corrington, his wife Mary, Isaac Van Tuyl, John Smith and Abraham Van Tuyl are buried. One last bit to add to your confusion!!! Continental Army pg Isreal Coon was a Private in Lee's Legion, Corporal same Jan 15, 1779. Married Sarah Sutton. Born 1758, died 1837. Maybe the Catherine Van Tuyl was a second wife??? Hope you find this helpful Debbie in California

    2. Robert Foran
    3. I would be grateful for any info on Charity Smith Bird b 18 May 1809 in Mt. Horeb, Warren Twp. She married Isaiah Coddington on 08 May 1831 also in Mt. Horeb. There chidlren were: Manning, Harriet, Isaiah, John Wesley and Enoch. One problem I have is that all of the pedigrees I have seen for her give her maiden name as BIRD. And yet the Rev. Herbert G. Coddington in his "Records of One Line of the Descendants of John Coddington of Woodbridge, N.J." (1907) states that Isaiah Coddington married "Mrs. Charity Bird (formerly Smith)." Has anyone tried to find a Charity SMITH married to a BIRD and then to a CODDINGTON? For those with the BIRD>SMITH>CODDINGTON version, have you found the mysterious Mr. Smith? For the latter version I have: Charity Smith Bird b1809 Parents: John Bird b ?? & Charity Coon b1788 in Piscataway, NJ Parents of John Bird: Unknown Parent of Charity Coon: a nice assortment: 1)Azariah Coon b1750 & Catherine Van Tuyl b abt 1760 (From the Maxine Lines compilation, Peter Coon2 family pages) or 2)Benjamin Coon b ?? & Catherine Van Tuyl ("Descendants of Isaac Van Tuyl, Sr. and Mary McCarter" by Mary Ellenor Stafford Bowman) or 3) Israel Coon b ?? & Catherine Van Tuyl (from Lora Codington, gr granddaughter of Charity Bird)

    1. Rappleyea and Covenhoven ancestors
    2. Mary Hobein
    3. I am new to this list but subscribe to several NJ locality and surname lists. About the farthest back I have gotten in tracing this branch of my family is the marriage of Richard Rappleyea (Rapalje) to Ellsie (Alice, Aeltsie) Covenhoven (Conover, Couwenhoven), both of Somerset County on 24 May 1795 by Rev. Barclay. NJ militia census of 1793 shows a Richard Rappleyea, age 21, in Somerset County. The 1830 census shows Ellsie Rappleyea as head of household in Franklin Twp.,Somerset Co. I believe that Richard had died earlier that year. I believe they had children Mary Ann (b. 1803 m. 1822 to Nicholas Lefferts), possibly a daughter Mathilda, and a son Richard R. (born ca. 1815), from whom I am descended. Richard R. married Cornelia Anderson (.b.ca. 1820) This family was probably Reformed Dutch in religion, but that is just a guess. Any suggestions on cemeteries, churches, or other places to contact for more information, books or microfilms to request from libraries, is appreciated. I live near Chicago so I cannot visit the places in person.
