    1. REED/SKILLMAN
    2. I am new to the list and am hoping someone may have some information that will help me break down the brick wall I have encountered. I am trying to find the parents of my great-grandparents, Charles REED and Maria Ann SKILLMAN. He was born February 26, 1814, in NJ somewhere, possibly Allentown. She was born March 23, 1821, in New Jersey, location unknown. They were married January 16, 1840, in the Neshanic Dutch Reformed Church by Reverend Gabriel Ludlow. They moved their family to Oconee, Illinois, in 1857, where they lived and raised 11 children, and both died in 1883. Does any of this strike a chord? Robert L. 3. Hi Robyn, I'll just give you all the Bairds and the Coddingtons! All of these are from Somerset County Historical Society, Volume 1, 1912. 1. 1800 & 1810 NJ census
    2. If anyone has access to the 1800 and/or 1810 NJ census I would greatly appreciate a lookup. Trying to find more on the Joseph Smith, Somerset County, Bedminster Twp. who lis listed in them. The only early info I have on my gggrandfather Joseph W. Smith is that he was born about 1788 in Somerset County. He later moved to Seneca County and married Rosannah Covert. I believe he may be one of the founders of the Reformed Church in Interlaken. Just trying to find where he came from. Would love to hear from anyone who has a connection to this gentleman. 3. I just added a photo of the above church to my webpage. It joins the following: Rocky Hill D.R.C. Griggstown D.R.C., Millstone D.R.C. and Six Mile D.R.C., Rather than offer to scan and send as I usually do - just look at the page and see them all. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hscc Look at the page called "Historic Churches of Somerset County". There is a photo of Harlingen Church on the page called "Somerset County - Where we live". I hope to add Blawenburg and Clover Hill as soon as the foliage is more visible and will make a prettier picture! Sharon

    1. the Landing
    2. Mary Hobein
    3. An article in the Somerset County Historical quarterly quoted the journal of Betsey Van Liew of Middlebush as saying that "Richard Rappleyea of the Landing died on March 29, 1829." Richard's widow, Elsie Rappleyea is enumerated on the 1830 census in Franklin Twp. in Somerset County. Can anyone tell me where "the Landing" is or where Richard and Elsie are likely to be buried? They belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church. Some of their children, but not all, were baptised in New Brunswick. Does the church at 6 Mile Run have a burial ground? If yes, are tombstone inscriptions available somewhere? 1. Stewart, Covert, Kuykendall, Coshun
    2. Hi Everyone-- I am hoping that someone on this list knows something about James STEWART, particularly who his parents were. He was b. 1727-1737 in Greenwich, NJ and died 1822 in Ontario. His wife was probably Mary Jemima Taylor, probably born in Elizabeth Twp. Essex Co., NJ. She was probably the dau. of Joseph Taylor and Eleanor COVERT. Charles Stewart lived in the same area of New Jersey and probably immigrated from Scotland. Charles was the father of Archibald Stewart of Sussex/Warren County. One possibility is that Charles Stewart was the father of James. James Stewart's children were Susannah (b. abt 1753), Joseph (b. abt 1755), James (b. abt 1756), Taylor, Benjamin (b. abt 1759), John, and Enoch (b. abt 1773). He may have also had a son named Charles. It appears that James Stewart, Sr. moved around some, and probably lived in Minisink, Orange Co., NY about 1775. His son, James Stewart, Jr. m. Keziah KUYKENDALL abt 1776 in Deer Park, Orange Co., NY. She was dau. of Martin Kuykendall and Catherine Kool. Also in the mix was Enoch Stewart who could be James' nephew or grandson. Enoch married Jannite Covert in 1793. She was born 6/6/1773 in Hillsborough, Somerset Co., NJ and died 8/10/1855 in Seneca Co., NY. Her parents were: Burgen Covert Sr. (born 10/3/1733 in Hillsborough, Somerset Co., NJ, died 11/20/1807 in Ovid, Seneca Co., NY) and Phoebe Fammetje Coshun/Coshan; born 1740 in Raritan, Somerset, NJ, daughter of Joshua Coshun & Anne Hegeman. Jannite Covert's brother, Joseph Covert, m. Rhoda Stewart. Was Rhoda Stewart a sister of Enoch Stewart. I'd like to correspond with anyone who connects with any of these people. 1. HELP FOR OBITUARY LOOKUP
    2. Hello. I need some help here. Would someone out there be willing to do an obituary lookup at the Somerville Messenger-Gazette newspaper office? It is located on Veterans Memorial Dr., off of E. Main St., Somerville. I contacted them and they informed me that the Obits. are on microfilm and the copying is free. I will gladly pay for gas, expenses, etc. Also, I have exact death dates, so it shouldn't take that long. I would do it myself, but I live 2,000 mi. away. So, if someone is interested, please contact me off list. Thank you, Paul

    1. Will/ Probate search
    2. Hi list members. I have a question. How do I go about getting a copy of a will filed in NJ for someone who died in Somerville in 1877? The Will was also filed in 1877. I believe I got the extract from a LDS FHC book of recorded Wills of NJ. (1838-1877) The entry was listed under Somerset Co. and went: HAZELTON, John 4930R, Inv. 1877. Who do I call or write to? Thanks, Paul

    1. Help finding a county for ancestors
    2. Greetings all! I have a dilemma that I will hopefully get some responses to. I am trying to find the county that my ancestors came from. One is BRIGGS, the other HAZELTON/HAZLETON. I have their death certificates from NJ, USA, I have US Federal census records for several years, etc. But every document simply has "Born in Ireland." Nothing more specific than that. I know Maria BRIGGS was born approx. 1836 in N. Ireland, her husband John HAZELTON/HAZLETON was born in N. Ireland in 1835. His father was Thomas Hazelton. I don't know his mother. On Maria Hazelton's (nee Briggs) death CERT it states her father as "Briggs," her mother as "Unknown."(big help...) Family has it that they married in 1872, but the state of NJ has no record of it. Maria lived in Somerset Co., NJ, USA for at least 35 years prior to her death, basically at the same address. She is buried in Somerville, NJ, (d. 1906) as is her husband, John (d. 1877). According to the Census, Maria left Ireland in 1857. Does anyone have any sources to suggest as to find the county they were from? I've had lookups in Griffith's and Tithe. Is that the only way to search for them? (suppose they're not on it...) Would there be some document, like a deed, mortgage, etc. that might have the county they were from? Would an obituary have any more info.? (if I could find one) Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you, Paul

    2. Wendy Freborg
    3. Bob, Since you are "formerly of Somerville," perhaps this description will jog your memory. The New Cemetery is the one on S. Bridge Street as you leave Somerville. When I lived in Somerville, if someone said "The Cemetery," this is the one they meant (especially if they were Protestant). It's the place where the Memorial Day parade ends. It is "New" only in contrast to the "Old Cemetery" across the road. The New Cemetery must date to the turn of the century as I have a burial listed in the Old Cemetery in 1882 and all burials after 1910 are in the New Cemetery. I hope this helps.
