I read somewhere that Naturalization Documents for certains years for Somerset County were kept in a regional INS office in NYC is that correct? If not, for those naturalized between 1900 and 1910, where do I write and how much is it per person? Thanks for your help, Maureen
There was a children's home on Westervelt Ave in North Plainfield, NJ in the 1930s. Does anyone know what the address was? Alice
Nancy, Rev John Boggs was minister at the church from 1815 to Feb 5, 1828. Rev. K. Rodgers was pastor from 1830-1874. I don't know what the present church status is. LDS has a film for marriage records of Somerset County for that time period. Film 1023875 I think is the correct one if you can get to a family history center. <<<Regarding death certificates, are you aware that when you send for a copy, they block out the cause of death now? Several states are now doing this because of AIDS and the desire for privacy. Of course they didn't have AIDS 50 years ago. It's frustrating to deal with government logic. Pat>>> This is completely incorrect, Pat. True, many states now ARE deleting the "Cause of Death". Unfortunately, there IS a legitamate reason for this recent need to block the "Cause of Death" on government documents released to the public. It seems that insurance companies are using present medical knowledge of how disease and certain health conditions ( ie. heart disease) may be heretitary, and combining that with govt. statistical records to justify either denying some people health insurance, or charging them huge premiums ( hey - you're "high risk"...see, your great grandfather died of a heart attack as did your great great grandfather!). I don't know if this was ever put into practice, but the idea was seriously under consideration by insurance companies not long ago - and many State governments reacted swiftly to do somehting to protect their citizens. Unfortunately, the mega-greed of insurance companies was combatted with a method that denies many of us geneological information! So goes life in our society, I suppose. One slight bit of good news...I understand that in the staes that have enacted these "blackouts", you can STILL get the "Cause of Death" if you 1: press the issue, AND 2: are a "direct decendant" of the individual in question AND 3: can PROVE your direct connection to the individual in question (unfortunately, great uncle, second cousin, "he was the brother of my great granddad" are NOT considered "direct" decendant). Also, if you know where the person is buried, you may find the cause of death in cemetary records. I've done this in New Jersey, where it seems the "black out" applies only to official government records, and not to cemetary records ( though, given the level of greed by "some", I suspect this blackout will sooner or later be extended to these records as well)
Greetings, A family legend claims that my 'orphaned' GG grandmother Ella Hummer (1864-1925) of Hunterdon County, NJ was the daughter of an Elizabeth Lewis and the granddaughter of a Jacob Lewis. While searching for matches for Jacob, I discovered a Jacob Lewis (b1814) who was married to Eliza Bellis in 1833 in Somerset County, NJ. Jacob was the son of an Isaac Lewis and Fanny Gertrude Kline. I'm interested in learning more about this Jacob, especially his children. I'd also like to find out if there were any other Jacob Lewises in Hunterdon or Somerset Counties during the early 19th century. Regards, Rick Novak

List Members, Thanks to all who gave me the name and address of where to write and/or call for the Vital Records that I needed. It was certainly appreciated. Birde mailto:Birde@bigfoot.com
Alice, Thanks for the info (unsettling as it may be, in some ways, to some of us!) ?... Do you know how NJ Archives will handle requests already sent by others at the $4.00 rate? I believe I have sent 8 requests of late, 6 of them some time ago, 2 last week, & they (NJ Archives) have not contacted me as of yet. I also requested 2 copies, should they be found & sent $2.00 per copy. Any information you can give at this time would be most helpful. I also don't remember seeing any prior notification for this increase, but I may have been working from pages printed out (I am not sure when). My experience was in Somerville Vital Records. Didn't get anywhere. Was given a form to fill out and told to send it to Trenton. Did better than that, went to the Trenton Archives and made my own photocopies. Much better research information..... Indexes, books, wills, death info, marriage and birth.... highly recommended. Rob
Hello List Members, I am new to your list and have a very simple question. I am trying to locate who/where to contact to get a copy of a birth certificate for a person that was born in Raritan,N.J. in 1900. Could someone point me in the right direction. I know that it should be the clerk of court but I cannot seem to locate that. One last thing, when researching a person born in Somerville,N.J. would I use the same contact source for a birth record from there? Thanks alot Birde mailto:Birde@bigfoot.com

NJ marriage licenses show that Simon Anderson married Mary Van Houghlin in Somerset County NJ on Oct 11, 1781. I have seen these variations on Mary's name: Van Aglen, Van Hengler, Van Anglen. Simon's will and baptismal records show that their children were: Mattje (Martha?), George, Cornelius, Sarah, and Dinah. I believe that Simon was probably the son of George and Mettie Anderson baptised on Janurary 1, 1757 in New Brunswick. Can anyone confirm this? Also, Somerset County marriages show the following: George Anderson and Polly Hill, May 29, 1802 George Anderson and Violetta Ten Eyck, November, 1816 Cornelius Anderson and Sophia Field, april 1, 1819. Does anyone know if any of these bridegrooms was a son of Simon and Mary Anderson?
