I had a Samuel Smith who lived in Salem Maine in early 1700's. There were also Pile/Pyles in the area, along with Higgins, Teal, Davis, Wright, and others. Could it be that the Smiths traveled down to Jersey, to Salem County, and named the town after the state the left? As in "Mainestown." Anyway, I was looking for a John DAvis from PilesGrove NJ, county unknown. I had wondered if it was a corruption of PinesGrove. This John Davis had connection with VA at later time.
