Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/oRB.2ACI/286.292 Message Board Post: Gordon, I was looking in Salem for DAVIS, DIAMINT/DIMINT/DEMINT, HAND, SMITH. of early CAPE MAY, NJ (1700) What I saw was your mention of DAVIS & VAN METER. which are connected to my VA family of HAMPSHIRE/HARDY CO 1780. Though my gr gr gr gr grandfather was John Davis, b NJ, there was also a James Davis mentioned in VA at same time. As for the Van Meter, they also were in the area too. They all came to early VA, possibly ORANGE CO, which became AUGUSTA CO, which became HAMPSHIRE CO, which became HARDY CO. There were also DAVIS in MONOGOHALIA CO, & SPOTSYLVANIA CO. My John DAVIS was a spy in the Rev.War, and received pension for it, as did his brothers, in VA. Turns out he was a double-spy, and was a true TORY. He was sentenced to hang for treason, but escaped. He was involved in the CLAYPOOL/CLAYPOLE REBELLION in HAMPSHIRE CO VA ca 1780, along with VAN METERS. Seems they all lived at one time in PENDLETON & ROCKINGHAM co's, possibly at Big Caves, a hide-out for Tories. I know John was Welch, but not sure how far back his family immigrated. There were alot of DAVIS before 1700, as were the other families.
