This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have just written to Gordon Sutton, encouraging him to join this Board and respond. It was Gordon who informed me that at least one Sutton had assumed the name of Petersen (his wife's maiden name) and relocated west, into Pennsylvania. My Reuben was married by a Baptist preacher in 1766, but his sons were Methodists. Gordon wrote that Mary Abbott and her Sutton husband had several children, among them Elizabeth who married Daniel Parvin. I believe Parvins to be Baptist or Meth., also. Since Daniel was in politics, perhaps there is an obituary or biography that would shed light on religious faith and the extended families in general. An author I once noted only as "Harper" wrote that on April 10, 1778, Abdon Abitt, Jr. and James Sutton, Jr., "fugitives from the fort at Billings in Gloucester County, visited Thomas Coatsutten, who fed them and asked them to return to Bridgeport and recruit! others to the obediency of the king of Great Britain." There is much confusing info from these times, to say the least!
