My great-great grandfather was born in Salem County in 1831 and served in company K of the 24th New Jersey Volunteers. Adam and his wife, Harriet, had the following childfren: John D. Jess [b. 1857]; Samuel Jess [b.1858]; Mary Jess [b. abt. 1862?]; Adam Jess [1867-1931]; Louisa Jess [1870-1927]; George Jess [b. abt. 1864?]; Levi Jess [1874-1927]; and Jenny or Virginia Jess [b. 1878, died ???]. Jenny or Virginia is my maternal great-grandmother. ADAM JESS is the brother of DAVID JESS. Their line, I know, extends to Zachariah Jess and Rachel Lippincott. According to phone records, there are currently several Adam Jesses who live in the Glouchester-Salem County area.

Adam and David were both privates in Company K. per Accessible Archives David is listed under "Names of voters at an election held in the township of Pilesgrove in the county of Salem, on the 3d day of November, in the year of on Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-six, for a Member of Congress, Member of the General Assembly, Sheriff, and three Coroners: Adam is listed under: Acton Post, No. 33, G.A.R.- Acton Post, No. 33, Grand Army of the Republic, was instituted Nov. 8, 1879, with charter members as follows: Samuel is listed as a private under April 14, 1778, the militia of the State was formed into two brigades, and Jan. 8, 1781, into three. During the war companies of artillery and troops of horse were organized in different localities. Stryker says,- "The good service performed by the militia of this State is fully recorded in history.
