Author: DoloresLangley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.salem/1851/mb.ashx Message Board Post: What a show! Were these all in one album, or stacked in a box? Andrea, wouldn't you agree that "Phebe Ott" could play the witch in the Wizard of Oz? Also, I'd LOVE to know more about the unnamed lady at the middle top of page 2, who dared to smile in a time that everyone (even wedding couples) looked dead-serious when posing for the photographer! I have let Malcolm Schalick Sharp know about the Schalicks included. Since these all seem to be Salem or Cumberland County people, I'll be amazed if he doesn't know them. Stepping up on my soapbox, may I suggest that the many question marks over your salvaged photos be a reminder to us all, to -- right now -- write NAMES and YEARS on back of photos (not just next to them, in an album that might fall apart!) Use a dark pencil, as ballpoint pen will leave an impression, and other inks could seep through or expand. Write only along the edges, in case it eventually seeps through to the front anyway, and be sure to check spellings and dates with others. Keep loose photos (or albums) in a lidded box in a dark, dry place, since ALL light (not just sunlight) fades photos. Use acid-free paper in between layers of photos. Never use plastic "sleeves," as these trap moisture, which then becomes god-awful, black mildew. Most importantly, make professional copies (not photocopies)for your safe deposit box. If you don't have a diggy-camera that can hanle close-ups, I suggest that it would be a wise investment to spend at a photo store. (Don't leave your photos there, but instead ask when they plan to process them, and stay with your photos). If you want to frame and display originals in your home or office, then invest in light-filtering glass. Even then, display them AWAY FROM direct sunlight or frequent artificial light, and make sure you have that professional copy made first. We need MORE photos of S. Jersey people, folks! Rootsweb allows attachments, but this Flickr site appears to be better yet, as they can stay there a while (right, Andrea?) They don't need to be unidentified, and/or "in search of the right home," but could just be for purposes of sharing your ancestor photos with someone who is either interested now, or may be in the future. Nice going! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
