I am the person who posted the message about the Alliance, NJ area. First, did I miss something????? What is the problem with Rootsweb having both Boards and List by the same name? Now to the questions you raised. 1. Bluma Bernstein came to the USA in 1890 with her two sons, one who is my grandfather. Along with this family, her sister Sara and her husband Bernard Pickholtz and their children came. No other relatives of either family were in the USA at that time. I searched the cemetery grounds and found no Bernsteins or Pickholtzs other than Sara. Besides Sara, I was hoping to find the grave of Bluma's other son David, who was 11 months old on his arrival in the USA. I have found no other data on him, as of this day. 2. I spoke to the contact person for Alliance who happens to be on the board as per the cemetery web page. She could give me the grave location, which I already had, but informed me if there was a death certificate, it was long gone. This was true of most of the early burial records. Pittsgrove township's record department informed me that ALL records from about 1885- 1895 were missing. The suggested I try Salem county. Salem county said it was great I had a date, but I needed to know the town. Since Sara's death, towns have changed their names, disappeared, merge, and eve become parts of other counties. All I know is where she is buried. The county said to check with the State Archives office. This office gave me the following info-- no alphabetical index exist to NJ death for the 1890's. You must search for the year, then look for a major city closet to where she died, in the county, then for all possible variations of spelling for the person being searched. This ! they we re not about to do. 3. Yes the family is Jewish. I have tried contacting a few synagogues in the area, but for the most part they are new. Where records from 1890 are today is a mystery. Even the cemetery people when questioned on this very point, could not tell me. 4. As I already stated, at that time, there would have been no connection to Phila. But to set the record straight, death records were checked for 1890- 1900 and none were found. The first Phila. mention of Pickholtz (it is an incorrect spelling) is found in the city directories for my great grandfather in 1894. I know it is him because of the address. By 1900 the spelling and the address match. Next the 1900 Phila US census list him as married to Bluma (Bernstein). I hope this helps you and or anyone else who might want to help or give advise to me. Steve Pickholtz Tabernacle, NJ
