Her name was Sara PICKHOLTZ. She is buried at the Alliance cemetery, in Pittsgrove, NJ. The Pittsgrove grovement informed me that all of their death records are missing from that period. Salem County can't help me since I don't know where she died. Likewise the State Archives office has not been of any help for the same reason. I know the last name in other records has been spelled with a T, D, R insteadof the P for Pickholtz and in some cases the "T" has been left out. Other variations of the name have been Pikholtz and Pichols. What I also know is her husband's name was Bernard Pickholtz and her maiden name was BERNSTEIN and they arrived in the USA in 1890. Also there was a scarlet fever out break durning this time period. I would like to know what town she lived in, where she died and what she died of. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you. Possibly the problem stems from Rootsweb's having both Boards and Lists by the same names. Or, then again, maybe I've simply missed something on either the Salem List or Board. 1. Did whomever copied info from Sarah's stone at Alliance not see any Pickholtz or Bernstein family members nearby? 2. What name (and was he/she a cemetery board member, or WHAT?) said burial and plot ownership records as recent as 1892 were missing? We need to start naming courthouse, historical society and other officials for information either given or denied/shrugged off. There is no "privacy issue" if someone is performing in a paid or appointed role. Also, as I learned while a newspaper reporter eons ago, asking for their name spelling and title may cause them to either double-check or refer you to a more reliable source. Surely Alliance has a small cemetery committee, not just one person, and I don't think I'm the only one who has ever heard one thing from the left hand, then another from the right! 3. Since I believe families have to be Jewish to buy lots in that cemetery, why not contact Synagogues in all directions (see Salem, Gloucester and Cumberland county yellow pages) to inquire about the two surnames? Surely there aren't more than a handful of such temples. 4. The Phila. Public Library looks up local obits for only one dollar, last I heard. Luckily, you have her exact death date, so you can at least determine if she died in or near Philadelphia, instead of S. Jersey. ---------------------------- ((clip from original post)) My great grandmother died on Jan. 1, 1892. Her name was Sara PICKHOLTZ.
