Hi Barbara, Thank you for responding. I was in hopes that Debbie Dilks would have some new information on John Moore. I have all the information you have. I haven't been able to find a marriage record for John and Ann Mattson (parents Isreal Mattson and Mary Pedrick). I haven't been able to find out where John came from or who his parents were. Virginia Moore sent me this information quite a while back. I just looked over it again after reading your message: Notes from Virginia MOORE 08/07/2003 Source: Thomas Cushing, M.D. and Charles E. Sheppard, Esq. History of the Counties of Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland, NJ (Philadelphia: Everts & Peck, 1883), pgs. 301-302. "Villages and Hamlets. Swedesboro, the principal town of Woolwich township, was one of the earliest settlements in Co. of Gloucestere. It was, as its name implies, settled by the Swedes, probably about the year 1838, Battentown, which was formerly a separate town, is now a continuation of Swedesboro. The town is at the head of sloop navigation on Raccoon Creek, about twelve miles, by the tortuous course of that creek, from the DE River. There are now but three people living here who were residents of the town in 1810, and only 14 who were here in 1830. According to the memory of John Pierson, who was then a boy, the following houses stood in Battentown and Swedesboro in 1810. ...Follows a list house by house up and down the street... Next was a small hatter's shop, owned by Richard Tittermary. John Moore's house stands on the old site of this shop. ... Next came the memorable old stone building known as the Swedesboro Hotel. In 1810 it was called the George Washington Hotel; and over its sign swung a life-size figure of the "Father of his Country," painted by distinguished artist of Philadelphia, at a large expense. This house was taken down and rebuilt by George Ford, the present owner and keeper. In a cavity in one of the walls of this house the driedremains of a turkey were found. The bird had evidently been "walled in" when the house was erected probably by rteason of some ancient Swedish superstition....The large framed house now owned and occupied by Isaac S. Stratton was then the property of Robert Tittlmary. Some additions have been made to the rear of this building. Then came Trinity Church, the front of which has not been changed. Since Ann, her children, Mathias Mattson Moore, John Moore, and Mary Moore were baptised in the Trinity Episcopal Church in Swedesboro and the home of John Moore was on the Kings Highway in Swedesboro, would I be wrong in thinking John is buried in that cemetery? Are there any records of who is buried in that cemetery? I wish I had thought of this before I made my last trip back there!! Hi Em...... I just got back from the Swedesboro area......spent a week of roaming through cemeteries and court houses. I do tombstone transcribing in Salem/Gloucester/Cumberland Counties and was at Trinity on Thursday. I haven't come across John Moore and his family. He could be buried at Trinity Cemetery that surrounds the church......most of those tombstones are unreadable. I have just been transcribing the ones at Trinity #2 (abt. 2 blocks from the church). The 1876 Atlas shows W. H. Hannold (the town's undertaker) living next to the Hotel. John Moore's grandson, Ezekiel is buried at Lake Park in Swedesboro. Ezekiel's son, Jacob Justice Moore is buried in Mullica Hill Baptist Cemetery. His son, John, is buried at Eglington.........so they run the gamut. I wish I could be more help to you. However, if I come across something, I'll be sure to let you know.
