Hi Robin, I'm in the process of transcribing this cemetery information for one of the one line cemetery sites, but it may take a few days. The witting in the book is VERY tiny for these old eyes!!! In re-reading the article I found this notation that may interest you. Two hundred and 212 inscriptions are recorded, probably twice as many, or half a thousand, lie buried there. I'm sure that somewhere you will be able to find the "missing burials" on you trip back "home'. Susan
What is the Fox entry? Thanks, Cindy
Hi, I hope they have the info I have been searching for on my 4th great grandfather Lorenzo D. (sometime "C") Keen b. abt. 1812 I think Barbara McCormick told me there are more people in the Sharptown ME Church cemetery than headstones. I hope that is what she was trying to tell me. If not---sorry Barbara. I have been searching for him for over 20 years and have only found a few things and his OBIT which did not mention where he was buried. The Lorenzo D. Keen that is in the cemetery is the others Lorenzo's grandchild. I hope my trip back home in a few months will be fruitful. " This list is believed to contain every name on headstones and monuments in Pilesgrove Methodist Meeting -house yard at the date of this record made in 1900. The date of death, which is approximately the date of interment followed by the age, is given whenever it appears on the memorials. It is impossible now to ascertain when theh yard was first used for burial purposes. Our historian informs us that Pilesgrove meeting-house, now standing, was built in 1795, by Joel Abbott. A picture of the old meeting house appeared in the 1904 edition of the Almanac and Year Book ( issued by the National Bank of Woodstown for 1904) It has since been torn down. The earliest inscriptions are those over the graves of three children of the Rev john Vanneman, who wwere buried in Oct and Nov of 1799. Issac herbert was buried on jan 1880; Margaret Fields in 1800 and Thomas Sparks in 1801" Some more information that you might find interesting follows. " The Society of Methodist, now worrshippin at Sharptown was orginated when Methodism was first introduced in Salem Co. The first regular preaching place of which we have any account was the house of William Clark. The house was built of brick and still stands, about a mile from Sharptown, on the road leading to Swedesboro. Now the farm of John Grispin and the old house was demolished a few years ago and replaced with a more modern structure. here the infant society continued to meet for years, and here the Word of God was preached by the first Methodist ministers in NJ. Here Abbott and his earnest associates in the ministry proclaimed salvation to the perishing souls. " "In the year 1795, it was resolved to build a house of God. A location was fixed upon, where now stand the old Pilesgrove meeting-house. The idea of building a church in the village was not at that time entertained on account of the extreme wickedness of the place. The house was built of wood, thirty five feet in length and thirty feet in width with a gallery in one end and was, at that time of the erection, considered a very commodious building. The old house still stand there, with recent repairs upon it, and is only used on funeral occassions." I'm sure that Woodstown would have additional material on this area, and it's growth. Susan
Is that list in the book complete? I heard the original church caught on fire. Someone who worked at the Salem County Historical Society told me that but I do not remember who. Also, Woodstown has a Historical society (not a big one). Has anyone been their and what papers, files etc do they carry? Is the first name of the latter definitely "Haryd," or would you care to re-check that, before busy people donate their time to make searches for you, and give up? If you post more details about the above Smiths, and any related family names from Southern NJ, and still no reader of this List can help, I suggest you contact both the Salem County Historical Society and/or the Salem Sunbeam newspapers, and pay for a copy from their obits. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

Keen (b. 1812-14) and a Mary (Daugherty or Dougherty) Keen or any Keen's at all. Or a Aaron H. I have some information on a John M Lounsbury, died Jan 1, 1817 age 25. This information came from the small 32 page book I bought from the GCHS, "Sharptown, Salem County NJ," by Frank H Stewart, President Gloucester Co HS, reprinted from the Salem Standard Jerseyman, 1931-1932. There are 3 pages with information concerning the "History of Old Pilesgrove Meeting House", as well as a listing of those buried in that area, The Names of Those Who Sleep in Old Pilesgrove Meeting House Graveyard, Near Sharptown,Salem County NJ. There is no index, but I'd be happy to do look ups for that Cemetery.
