Hello All, I just came across a nice map of the state of New Jersey from "historic" times. It's up on my website if anyone is interested. I believe all of the old towns are represented. http://www.midatlanticarchives.com Alan RESEARCHING: Buckingham, Gilpin, Eastburn, Jeanes, Nowland, Wade, Creswell, Vansant and related families -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I also went to the site Cindy sent -- very fun and informative. Thank you Cindy. I'm feeling a bit guilty about not being "on topic" so I'll probably not post anything more here on the list. :))) Great side-step tho -- enjoyed it -- Terri

Quoting Cyndi Brown <lv2beasahm@comcast.net>: "John Jacob Astor IV married Miss Madeleine Talmage Force at 9:55 am on 10 September 1911. ((clip)) The baby boy was, of course, John Jacob Astor V. He was born on 14 August 1912. -------------------- Actually, even though he was the son of IV, the baby's numeral was VI. The V had already been used by the English Astors, who were also direct heirs of John Jacob Astor I. For that matter, JJ the 2nd, who was either mentally retarded or mentally ill, was not the father of JJ the 3rd. They apparently went by "first come, first named." I did go to the website Cyndi named; thanks. Interesting how Madeleine gave her age as 20 to reporters the day of the wedding, when even by the time of the Titanic disaster she was only 18 and 9 mos. I wish that website, or my book, had a photo of JJ IV's first, lavish wedding with Ava. That would have to be the PINNACLE of American Astor events, I would think. And, that took place in Phila., so we're NEAR the interest of the Salem List (laughing). ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
The Grantee Index in the County Clerk's Office should have it. If records are not maintained that far back, they are on microfilm in the New Jersey Archives in Trenton. I have found many deeds there from the late 1600s, including ones from John Fenwick to my ancestors. Now, (assuming my masterpiece is unretrievable), I hate to write something twice, but will summarize. I own a 1966 book on the Astors that details their Titanic tragedy, as part of the multigenerational story of the family in America. John Jacob Astor IV had finally divorced Ava, his cold wife, then at age 47 married the 18-year-old Madeleine. Public reaction was so negative that the couple left for a multi-month tour of Egypt and England. Then they booked onto the Titanic to get back to the States, since Madeleine was expecting. The author does not give their wedding date, nor baby's birth date, but generally gives the impression there was sufficient space in between. Oddly, though, the baby got only a $3 million trust fund through Dad's will, while $67 million went to the 19-year-old son. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NJSALEM-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Joe, Keep meaning to write you. I am so sorry. On Pierpont, was there a tie in to the DuPont's? Just curious. Thank you Cindy and Char!!! Glad to get my facts straightend out. Very interesting story about JP Morgan!! I'm also interested in the Titanic story as a great deal of my maternal line live in Nova Scotia -- where so many of the deceased ended up. Have yet to visit that cemetery there, but definitely will on my next visit. Interesting little "side step" we just took -- Thanks y'all --- Terri
That's John Jacob Astor IV who got his young wife, Madeleine Talmadge Force, on a lifeboat. :) Though pregnant, they were going for their honeymoon. I'm too much of a Titanic buff. :) Cyndi Young-Brown -----Original Message----- From: njsalem-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:njsalem-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Terri Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2007 10:04 AM To: njsalem@rootsweb.com Subject: [NJSALEM] rescued photos/Pierpont I think Andrea got it right with JP Morgan. Terri .... I think 'ol JP Morgan is the one you mentioned from the Titanic. ... at least I am pretty sure that's what the movie said !!!!! "D Mill
Wtg Cindi The funny thing is I'm a Morgan decendant and also a big JP Morgan buff. He did however own a large portion of the company that owned the ship. He also recovered all his art work that was going to be shipped the USA. He pulled it off the ship when it was found that there were a lot of con men on the ship ready to get him cornered on the titanic and badger him to invest with them. That is the main reason he didn't go and that is what saved him. He was too busy setting up his latest mistress in France with a new apartment and so the time was not good to leave. No JP did not take the trip on the Titanic. However he was schedule to take it and canceled at the last min. J P's mother was Juliet Pierpont (18161884)) of Boston Mass. Pierpont was the name he preferred to be called as a young man. JP lived out his later life in Rome. and died on March 31, 1913 at the age of 76.
