    2. Fred Burton Samson
    3. A Will noted in Documents relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey for Ball, Mary, dated 17 November, 1747 lists sisters--Abigail Hencock, Rachel Samson, Sarah Tichener, Hannah Shingilton, and Elizabeth Day. I am working to separate the two and possibly three Ezekiel Sampsons (Samsons) that served in the Revolutionary War. It is possible that Rachel Samson listed in the the above (Mary Ball) Will may be part of one of the lines and the maiden name may be Tichener. Any information would be appreciated on Rachel Samson. 1. [NJSALEM] Burroughs, John of Trenton - Baker - Abbott of Bucks Co.
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Can someone on the list identify the "John Burroughs" mentioned in these wills? Abstractions of Bucks Co. PA Wills: 1. Book No. 2 Benjamin ABBOTT of Makefield, written 23 Dec 1746. Proved March 16, 1747. Executors: father in law John Burroughs of Trenton and brother in law Thomas Whitson of Suffolk Co., NY. No mention in the abstracted will of a wife. Anyone know who his wife was? If she was a daughter of John Burroughs of Trenton, who was she? Names these children (apparently all minors): -- James (the eldest), Benjamin, Edith Burroughs, Joseph, John, and Hannah Baker. Witness: Joseph Baker, Charles Bryan. 2. Book No. 3 Samuel BAKER of Upper Makefield, written 25 June 1758. Proved Sept 29, 1760. Wife Elizabeth. Balance among the children when of age. Children not named. Executors: brother Joseph Baker and brother in law John Burroughs. 3. Book No. 3 Rachel BAKER, widow, of Upper Makefield, written 1st month, 26th day 1760. Proved Feb 16, 1760. Mentions: son Henry, daughter Lydia Burroughs, granddaughter Hannah Burroughs. Executor: son in law John Burroughs. >From the above will, it appears that a John Burroughs married Lydia Baker and they had a daughter Hannah by 1760. I descend from John Burroughs of Trenton -- the John Burroughs who wrote a will in 1768 which named 9 children and 1 grandson. In his will, this John Burroughs of Trenton refers to a son John, a daughter MARY BAKER and a daughter Elizabeth ROSE (among others). There is no mention of Abbott grandchildren or a deceased daughter married to an Abbott. Can anyone identify the John Burroughs mentioned in the 1746 Abbott will and the 1758 and 1760 Baker wills? Helen Graves Descendant of John Burroughs of Trenton via his son Benjamin Burroughs b. June 1742 who married Mary Van Horn in 1763. Within a few years (c. 1765), Benjamin moved to Pittsgrove, Salem Co., where he lived on land his father purchased from Mahlon Kirkbride. At that time, or shortly thereafter, Benjamin's brother Isaac and his wife Patience, also moved onto John Burroughs' land in Salem Co.; both Benjamin and Isaac are named as sons in the 1768 will, and by his will, their father gave them his land in Salem Co. on which they had been living since c. 1765.

    1. [NJSALEM] Alliance, NJ area
    2. I am the person who posted the message about the Alliance, NJ area. First, did I miss something????? What is the problem with Rootsweb having both Boards and List by the same name? Now to the questions you raised. 1. Bluma Bernstein came to the USA in 1890 with her two sons, one who is my grandfather. Along with this family, her sister Sara and her husband Bernard Pickholtz and their children came. No other relatives of either family were in the USA at that time. I searched the cemetery grounds and found no Bernsteins or Pickholtzs other than Sara. Besides Sara, I was hoping to find the grave of Bluma's other son David, who was 11 months old on his arrival in the USA. I have found no other data on him, as of this day. 2. I spoke to the contact person for Alliance who happens to be on the board as per the cemetery web page. She could give me the grave location, which I already had, but informed me if there was a death certificate, it was long gone. This was true of most of the early burial records. Pittsgrove township's record department informed me that ALL records from about 1885- 1895 were missing. The suggested I try Salem county. Salem county said it was great I had a date, but I needed to know the town. Since Sara's death, towns have changed their names, disappeared, merge, and eve become parts of other counties. All I know is where she is buried. The county said to check with the State Archives office. This office gave me the following info-- no alphabetical index exist to NJ death for the 1890's. You must search for the year, then look for a major city closet to where she died, in the county, then for all possible variations of spelling for the person being searched. This ! they we re not about to do. 3. Yes the family is Jewish. I have tried contacting a few synagogues in the area, but for the most part they are new. Where records from 1890 are today is a mystery. Even the cemetery people when questioned on this very point, could not tell me. 4. As I already stated, at that time, there would have been no connection to Phila. But to set the record straight, death records were checked for 1890- 1900 and none were found. The first Phila. mention of Pickholtz (it is an incorrect spelling) is found in the city directories for my great grandfather in 1894. I know it is him because of the address. By 1900 the spelling and the address match. Next the 1900 Phila US census list him as married to Bluma (Bernstein). I hope this helps you and or anyone else who might want to help or give advise to me. Steve Pickholtz Tabernacle, NJ

    3. Steve, There are only two sections to the death certificates at the NJ archives - Salem City and then the rest of salem county. They're indexed alphabetically by fiscal year - June to July, and then alphabetically. It might take you all of 10 minutes to go thru the 1889-1890 and then the 1890-1891 index. It shouldn't be too hard to look for Pickholtz or any variation :) -andrea On 6/15/07, nj55turtle@comcast.net <nj55turtle@comcast.net> wrote: > I am the person who posted the message about the Alliance, NJ area. > > First, did I miss something????? 3. Dear Dolores Alliance Cemetery is a Jewish Cemetery. It is located on Gershal Avenue. All early & present day Jewish people are buried there. There is another Old Jewish cemetery on Landis Avenue & Rt 55 that was used I do not remember it's name so I will look at the entrance gate this weekend when I drive by.They may be buried there there is only one caretaker of that cemetery. Alliance has either one or 2 persons taking care of it. They still bury there. That cemetery is also right near my house I also drive by there. The Synagogue is on Almond Rd.I can see it from my house. They do not have a phone there. Bernstein is a well known name in Vineland,NJ(a doctor), Pickholtz I have never heard of.They may have lived in Vineland & buried in Alliance Cemetery which is the only Jewish Cemetery. It may take me a week or two as I am busy this weekend, to take a walk to Alliance Cemetery. I will look for your two surnames to see if I find any info for you. Do you have any dates on them? 1. Re: [NJSALEM] Alliance, NJ area-- 1890--1882
    2. Possibly the problem stems from Rootsweb's having both Boards and Lists by the same names. Or, then again, maybe I've simply missed something on either the Salem List or Board. 1. Did whomever copied info from Sarah's stone at Alliance not see any Pickholtz or Bernstein family members nearby? 2. What name (and was he/she a cemetery board member, or WHAT?) said burial and plot ownership records as recent as 1892 were missing? We need to start naming courthouse, historical society and other officials for information either given or denied/shrugged off. There is no "privacy issue" if someone is performing in a paid or appointed role. Also, as I learned while a newspaper reporter eons ago, asking for their name spelling and title may cause them to either double-check or refer you to a more reliable source. Surely Alliance has a small cemetery committee, not just one person, and I don't think I'm the only one who has ever heard one thing from the left hand, then another from the right! 3. Since I believe families have to be Jewish to buy lots in that cemetery, why not contact Synagogues in all directions (see Salem, Gloucester and Cumberland county yellow pages) to inquire about the two surnames? Surely there aren't more than a handful of such temples. 4. The Phila. Public Library looks up local obits for only one dollar, last I heard. Luckily, you have her exact death date, so you can at least determine if she died in or near Philadelphia, instead of S. Jersey. ---------------------------- ((clip from original post)) My great grandmother died on Jan. 1, 1892. Her name was Sara PICKHOLTZ. She is buried at the Alliance cemetery, in Pittsgrove, NJ. > The Pittsgrove grovement informed me that all of their death records are > missing from that period.
