The twin's parents were Horatio and Elizabeth. I have been trying to figure out who Horatio's (Sr.) parents were. I have a lot of information on the early Firths, including someone named Stubbins, who was also a doctor. But I can't connect that group to my father's family. I'm hoping Horatio's parents will provide me with that connection . How are you related to Horatio? I would love to get a copy of that letter. Hi, Just wanted to add a little to the discussion, from my own research. One of my John Nixons of Woodstown, Salem county, lost his place to Sherriff sale when the lender (Isaiah Shinn) died, and the heirs then called in the debt in full. In this case, the heirs bought the place at the sherriff sale, then sold it back to Nixon at a higher price, and a higher rate of interest, which I believe varied over time, but was set by law. This sort of mortgage loan seems prevelant through the mid 1700 and 1800s, (judging by the mortgage books I have seen in the Salem County Courthouse) before banks, and many people gave personal mortgages or let out money to make money, which you can sometimes see directed by order in wills. One other scenario I have seen a few times, are heirs pressing the executor or administrator, to pay them their due of an estate, and hence forcing the matter in court, when matters didn't proceed in a timely manner. One was Isaac Richman in 1822 and the other was Henry Graham, in 1830 and 1833. In both cases, it was because of debt. I have learned that there was a depression during this time period, and lots of people really struggled. I found both of mine in land records. I have learned that the grantor (seller) is not my grandfather, but the sheriff. Even though it was my grandfather's land being sold. So, I have learned to go to the deed index and look at the Sheriff's sales in the Grantor Index. Mary E. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Harris/Sheppard Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/oRB.2ACI/630 Message Board Post: My husband is descended from Oliver and Amy Sheppard Harris who were married in Cumberland Co., NJ by Rev. Henry Smalley. Oliver was born in 1777 in Cumberland Co., NJ and Amy was born 15 FEB 1780. (Amy was a daughter of Joel Sheppard, born 17 SEP 1748.) The couple migrated to New Market Township, Highland Co., OH, date unknown. We have a copy of a diary written in 1800 - 1804 by a 'brother' of Oliver, but whose name is unknown. The author was a teacher and lived sometimes with the Rev. Henry Smalley family as well as with others when he was teaching school in the areas of Bowentown, Shiloh and Bridgeton, Cumberland Co., NJ. He later did at least his initial training in preparation for becomming a minister with Henry Smalley also. On Aug 6, 1802, he notes that he was 20 years of age and, subsequently, on 6 Aug 1803 he noted himself as having become 21 years old, making his date of birth 06 Aug 1882. Another relevant date would be 03 April 1802, the date of his baptism when Joel Harris, Oliver Harris and Wm. Steeing were baptised in addition to our 'mystery boy'. The church appears to be Cohansey Baptist. In the diary, the author mentions his sister Sally (Sarah) who was married to Mark Bowen (03 Apr 1798). He tells of the marriage of his brother, Oliver, and Amy on 20 June 1803. Others mentioned as siblings were: 1) Polly, noted on 26 March 1803, (my sister Polly indentured unto uncle Johnson Reeves), 2) Hosea who died 19 March 1802 (described as 'a blooming youth' but a little past 16 years of age) - making him born @ 1786, 3) Charles (no information noted other than that the author and Charles lived together when there was an outbreak of measles in Dec 1802). It is my understanding that the father of Oliver was Robert who married Mary Bereman ('uncle Eli Bereman', 'uncle Joel Bereman', 'aunt Sally Bereman' are mentioned). Mary's death occurred 1 Sep 1799 in Cumberland Co., NJ, Father: John Bereman, Mother: Sarah Fithian Bateman (The mother of the author of the diary was noted as having been deceased 'one year' as of '01 Sep 1800', which would concur with Mary B. H.'s death above) Robert apparently was married a second time, however we have not located the name of a wife other than Mary. 'Lemuel Reeves', son of above (uncle) Johnson Reeves and Zerviah Reeves is mentioned as is 'Uncle Joel Harris' Does anyone have access to any information which would help to identify the name of the author of the diary? Or might you have a suggestion as to where this might be located? Also is there a means of substantiating the information regarding Polly, Hosea and Charles? Thank you.

Hi Deb, Jeremiah "Jerry" Richer, b. Jan. 26, 1858, Upper Pittsgrove, Salem Co, d. March 18, 1899 after 6 wks. of Acute Abdominal pain (ruptured appendix?), son of Ananias and Mary Hughes Richer. His mother died in childbirth on Jan. 26, 1858. He married into my LACY line -- Rachel "Annie" Lacy, 1858-1893 (died of Typhoid Fever) -- m. March 3, 1881, Harrisonville ME Church (Glou. Co.), by Rev. Daniel Harris. They had 2 children -- Laura and Harmon. Both Jerry and Annie Lacy Richer are buried with their daughter Laura in Friendship Methodist Cemetery, Monroeville, Salem Co. (close to Gloucester Co.) with many Hutchinson relatives. This info was confirmed by Lacy records, birth/death certs., cemetery records, tombstones, marriage records in County Historic Libraries, and census sheets from 1850 onward. If you look a little further you can verify much of the Richer/Austin info. by checking out some of the available data in Camden, Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland Co. HS Libraries. It has taken me 3 years to put some of this together! After Harmon lost his mother, father, and sister he moved to Camden in 1900 and lived w/ my grgrandparents (his grandparents), William "French" and Sarah Mood LACY, and then in 1910 he worked on his cousin's farm, Frank E. Austin who married Sarah J. Hutchinson (linked also to LACYs). If I can help you with more confirmed dates let me know. Are you related to any of the Richer descendants who live in Toms River, NJ?
