In 1940 the DAR's national project was to read all the stones in all cemeteries in the US. Possibly there is a copy of that at the Historical Society in Salem? My local genealogy society realized in mid-1970 that there was a huge gap of burials in our county since 1940 and took on the project to again read all the cemeteries to update the records. We then were able to publish them (I ran a printing press at the college where I work) and we made 8 volumes in the process. Our society sold them for about $7-8.00 each which brought in the funding for future volumes. Not only has it been self-sufficient as far as cost, but it has provided much need information to people across the country who need the information but can't come to Lancaster County Nebraska to hunt up the records and comb the cemeteries. we have one cemetery in Lincoln which is owned by the city that has some 47,000 burials - yeah, that isn't a typo - and some 5-600 are buried there every year. We were allowed to copy their rolladex files and made 2 volumes out of that cemetery. Can you imagine how out of date it is now, about 30 yrs later? Copies of our ceemtery volumes were not only given to the State Historical Society and local libraries, but 2 copies to Salt Lake and the National Archives. Other state libraries around the country have purchased them from us as well as, individuals. Perhaps this is a project your local genealogy and historical society could undertake together? Good luck and thanks for whatever information you have been supplying for those of us who can't come to Salem Co to hunt our illusive ancestors. The Friends Ground cemetery is located at the Salem Oak in Salem, NJ. From other research, I know that there are hand written books at the Salem Co. Historical Society on nearly every cemetery in the county. If I remember correctly, this was a project conducted around 1902 to list every headstone or grave. Also, I was just researching the FIRTH name for someone and reviewed "The Genealogy of the FIRTH Family of Salem Co., NJ" by Arnold Harris HORD, 1931, Vickery Family. Also reviewed a file the H.S. has on the FIRTH's, ViCKERY's & HORD'S. The FIRTH's had a connection with John Fenwick who arrived at the place he called Salem--"peace," in June 1975. He came on the ship "Griffin," bringing with him his children, relatives, settlers and sevants. The FIRTH lineage was as follows: Edward FIRTH, of England. He had a son John. John FIRTH, of Salam, NJ married Sarah Boyer in 1709 and had a son Edward b: 1710. John's second marriage in 1715 was to Sarah Thompson STUBBINS (b: 1687) and they had a son John (married Margaret Tabor SPARKS). In 1722 Sarah STUBBINS FIRTH married Edward VICKERY. John FIRTH (b: 1718) married Judith VICKERY. Their children were: Ezra b: 1745; Sarah b: 1747; Elizabeth b: 1751; John b: 1754; Henry b: 1756; John b: 1757. Ezra FIRTH (1745-1779) married in 1768 to Elizabeth CARPENTER (1751-1779). Their children were: Preston Carpenter b: 1769; John b: 1771; Samuel b: 1775 & Thomas b: 1776. Hope this helps someone. If you don't find what you want at Salem County Historical Society, check with Gloucester. Neither the church nor Salem Co. had the burial record for Pittsgrove Presbyterian Cemetery, but I found it at Gloucester. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 15, 2003 8:45 AM Subject: Quaker Buring Ground > The Friends Ground cemetery is located at the Salem Oak in Salem, NJ. The Friends Meeting House in Salem next door to the cemetery has a burial list; but for quite a few first years, they did not put names on the headstones. I think I also saw one at the Salem Historical Society. Hi .... My great-grandfather, James MacFarland, had a house/general store/ post office/stock farm on Main Street in Monroeville in the last third of the nineteenth century that, I believe, still stands today in Monroeville. The house, recently renovated, which seems to be fairly well-known in the area, was either built by James or his son, Randolph. A book of NJ biographies published in 1900 mentions in James' bio that his beautiful home and fine farm stood opposite the railroad station on Main Street but another article in a local newspaper in 1969 says that someone had told the reporter that the MacFarland mansion was built by Randolph MacFarland, James' son, in the early 1900s. A woman who owned the house in the1960s believes that the house was built about 1870 and that would have meant James built it. Does anyone know anything about the house and its history or about James MacFarland or his son, William, my grandfather? This summer I intend to come up and visit the Salem County Historical Society but first wanted to see if there was anyone here who lived in that area and knew anything about the house's history. Thank you! .... Bill

Hi, The site mentioned below in Joan's email contains a for-pay vital records lookup component for New Jersey (Charles Updike lives near Trenton) which I tried last week. I sent him $30 through Paypal for five 19th century vital record searches and one will and inventory and received back as email attachments a week later a seven page Will and Inventory, one Index Register of Death, one Return of Birth, and one Marriage Return (two requests could not be found). For me it was a fast, inexpensive way to get records stored in Trenton as I am in Miami. I have ordered from the state before but they took more than 3 months to deliver. ....
