Note: Several years ago newspapers changed their policy of printing obituraries for free, and adopted a fee base for these writeups. Because they often cost a family $200 or more for each newspaper, some obituaries never make the newspaper. Your family obituaries may be in the Elmer Times, Elmer NJ or the Today's Sunbeam, Salem, NJ or both. The Salem Co. Historical Society has both these publications on microfilm for viewing. Are there any type of tax records or militia records for Salem Co. between 1760 and 1770? Thanks. Eleanor
Are there any records from the Lutheran churches in Friesburg or Cohensey which mention schoolmasters? Have any books on the history of either of these churches ever been published? Thanks. Eleanor
I have been told that the Lutheran Church in Salem Co. and the German Church in Cumberland Co. did some things together. Do the ORIGINAL records for either of these churches still exist? If so, where can they be found? I know that someone has translated the original records from the Salem Co. chruch, but where did they find them to transcrible? Thanks. Eleanor

Does anyone have ANY information on RACHEL EMERSON who married EZRA FIRTH in Salem,NJ on Feb. 4, 1813? I believe she is my ggg grandmother. She possibly may have died in the mid 1820's. I would appreciate any help and/or suggestions on how to find her. Thank you, Linda (Firth) Layton
My Gentry's are from Salem, Cumberland, & Gloucester Co's, NJ. And, so far, are NOT related to the southern families,(NC,SC,VA etc)or any other Gentry line. I've tried for years to connect to the 1909 book without luck. William & Thomas Gentry of NJ were mentioned, but not connected. I (at this time) think that my (NJ) Gentry's are German not English (also told Scottish???). I read that William (below)had brothers Moses, Ebenezer, 2 others & some sisters. I haven't found anything out about Moses, Ebenezer or the other siblings so I check all leads. As of 11/20/02, Moses Gentry, of Cumberland Co., NJ, Letters of administration granted by Joseph Moore, Surrogate, on 6 Dec 1854, to William Gentry. There is also mention of a Moses Gentry serving in the war of 1812. WILLIAM GENTRY & MARGARET HECTOR were married in Salem Co., NJ, 8 Dec 1803. I have found Nathaniel Harris Padget in the 1850 and 1860 census in Lancaster Co Pa and it states their birthplace is New Jersey. I only know of three children that belong to Phoebe and Nathaniel. Naomi, Joseph and Daniel either R or B can not make it out. The B if it is B may be for Bennett. Nathaniel also tells the census taker his parents were born in New Jersey. This is another of my struggling lines.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/oRB.2ACI/668 Message Board Post: I have been looking for the parents of Catherine HOLTON, who married Henry WEISS 17 Dec 1846. (Thanks to all who replied to me previous query). I believe I may have found them and would like to know if anyone can verity this or send me back to square one, if necessary. I believe her parents were John HOLTON and Sarah BIDDLE. Sarah's mother was Catharina PETERSON (married name). My reasoning is... I found mention of the will of Catharina PETERSON, dated 26 Jan 1856. She mentions several children and grandchildren. She leaves proceeds of her estate to the children of her deceased daugter, Sarah HOLTON. In addition, she specifially excludes her grandaugther Catharine WEISS. She also leaves part of the estate to, among others, a son, Abel BIDDLE. To me, this indicates that Catharina was married at least once before she married Mr. PETERSON, and that Sarah's name maiden name was probably BIDDLE. I did find a marriage record for Sarah BIDDLE and John HOLTON, 10 Oct 1818, which would be an appropriate time for Catherine HOLTON"s parents. I than did a search of the marriages for Catherine BIDDLE and found her married to Abraham PETERSON 22 Jan 1831. The only Catherine I could find married to a BIDDLE was a Catherine FLANAGAN married to a William BIDDLE 6 Jan 1803, but for this to me Catherina PETERSON, Sarah could not have been much more than 15 when she married John HOLTON. I do have more names from the will, but don't if they are children or grandchildren of Catharina Peterson. If anyone can connect to any of these people, or would like more info...please email me at sea_dragon99 at yahoo dot com or reply here. Thanks for reading this. Kim

He was very active in the Brooklyn Academy of Medicine. There are other Firth doctors who are also there at the same time. I'm trying to find out how they connect. Perhaps one of them is his father. Did you ever send for Horatio's death certificate? I think his parents' names may be on it --if Elizabeth knew who they were. Let me know if you have a death certificate. If not, I'll send for one. Also did you ever obtain a marriage certificate or record from Salem? If not, I'll look into that, too. Thanks. Linda Layton
