If the name was hard to read, the word (unreadable) will be placed next to it and our best guess at what was recorded is given. I am trying to get information on a marriage between Richard Garsed Johnson and Caroline Miller. The wedding was in Salem, November 6, 1872. I am particularly interested in information about the parents of the bride and groom. Did Salem issue marriage licenses at this time? Thanks, Gary Johnson Richmond, VA

The 1800 Census for Cumberland County is in a bound book. I found it at the Library of Congress and I'm sure several places in NJ must have copies. In the meantime, I copied the entire book - it's not that long, so if someone wants to give me a name, I'll look for it. I just checked www.familysearch.org - Library - Family History Library Catalog. I did a Place search for Cumberland New Jersey. Under Census - Indexes I see the 1800 Census for Cumberland County, New Jersey. It is only and index to the heads of household, but it is still great! Here is a list of obituaries taken from local papers by my grandmother and great-grandmother that I found in an old wooden box I call the "obituary box". They appear to have been taken mostly from the Gloucester City News and Woodbury Daily Times, but some are from whatever paper served Elmer at the turn of the last century. Most are relatives from the Daisey, Wilson and Hughes families. Some are friends and neighbors, and one or two are not at all familiar to me. Women are listed with married name first. The year is given where known. If any of these folks are of interest to you, I can scan the obit and send it to you. Janet T. Smith Gloucester City, NJ [email protected] Cullen, Walter C, ? FYI: Before the blight in the oyster beds there were 500 watermen in the Delaware Bay. That's why the towns Bivalve and Shellpile were so named. I have read that there are now only three watermen. Harriet
When I was doing some research on Maryland's Eastern Shore (Actually just outside the 3 counties that is Delaware) I learned about a reference to "Waterman" as a occupation. It seems that that is what those who go out in boats to catch fish, or to clam, or Oyster gathering are called. Maybe "The Water" means something like that. warmly, Ric ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2003 4:03 AM Subject: Another strange meaning : On one of my GGGGrandparents documents, It lists : Following The Water as his occupation. : Anyone have a clue to that one? : Lora : : : ============================== : To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: : http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 : :
