I am trying to locate my great grandfather Thomas Joynes Smedley. His first two children were born 1858 and 1860 in Alloway, New Jersey, but I haven't been able to find any trace of them in the 1860 census so was wondering if I could find them in church records. I know he did a lot of business with the Quakers so am wondering if there wasn't an LDS church there maybe he went to the Quaker meetings. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My second cousin, Ray Sutton, gave me this same information about a Sutton assuming the Peterson name. My paternal grandmother was Minnie Elizabeth Sutton Harris, born 14 Feb 1910 and married Howard David Harris in 1928. Her great, great grandfather is supposed to be James Abbot Sutton who was born 1776 in Salem County, NJ. Connie

I have just written to Gordon Sutton, encouraging him to join this Board and respond. It was Gordon who informed me that at least one Sutton had assumed the name of Petersen (his wife's maiden name) and relocated west, into Pennsylvania. My Reuben was married by a Baptist preacher in 1766, but his sons were Methodists. Gordon wrote that Mary Abbott and her Sutton husband had several children, among them Elizabeth who married Daniel Parvin. I believe Parvins to be Baptist or Meth., also. Since Daniel was in politics, perhaps there is an obituary or biography that would shed light on religious faith and the extended families in general. An author I once noted only as "Harper" wrote that on April 10, 1778, Abdon Abitt, Jr. and James Sutton, Jr., "fugitives from the fort at Billings in Gloucester County, visited Thomas Coatsutten, who fed them and asked them to return to Bridgeport and recruit! others to the obediency of the king of Great Britain." There is much confusing info from these times, to say the least!
Couldn't find anything on this Catherine in Salem County, but I wonder if this one in the Monroe and Washington Twp Gloucester/Camden County might be the one. (1850 and 1860 census records included) There were Davis along the border of Salem & Gloucester, so she may have met Daniel through a relative in Salem County. Was her mom Sarah? ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Robin Stinson" <robinpaulstinson@msn.com> Reply-To: njsalem@rootsweb.com To: "NJSALEM-L" <NJSALEM-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [NJSALEM] Need so assistance Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2006 01:00:38 -0400 Hello, Is their anyone who knows about the Davis genealogy of Salem County or surrounding counties. Barbara, Go to the website, click on the book about Salem County, click on any page, RIGHT click, select "Save image" and save that page to your Desktop in a file called "Salem Book" or some such thing. That will save it as a .jpg image. Then you can print the page one of several ways. You can paste the image, for instance, as a picture into a Word document, and print it. Or, there is a free program called Irfanview you can download onto your computer. Then drop the .jpg image of any page from the Salem book into Irfanview and you can print the page from there. The website for a free copy of Ifranview is http://www.irfanview.com/ Mary Hill On 9/15/06, Barbara de Mare <barbarademare@yahoo.com> wrote: > > Hi Alan, > > I have found your book and read parts of it on-line. Hi Alan, I have found your book and read parts of it on-line. It is most fascinating. I have not figured out how to print the pages. Is it possible, or is meant to be impossible? It is infinitely easier to read when printed out than when staring at the screen, which I can't see well. In a message dated 9/14/2006 5:41:39 AM Eastern Standard Time, geneslady@ec.rr.com writes: "Built circa 1720, this house was the residence of the Geiger (now spelled Kiger) brothers when, from 1744 until the time of the American Revolution, Jesuits from St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia would come to offer Mass and perform the Sacraments," the first line of the plaque reads. At the time, the practice of the Catholic faith was forbidden in New Jersey and worshipers had to do so in secret. In the early 18th century, Catholic Masses had been outlawed by King George II of England, yet many Belgian and German Catholics had migrated to Salem County to work in the glass houses during his reign. Matthew and Adam Geiger were both employed at the Wistarburg Glass Works in Alloway Township when the two brothers moved into the house in 1744 and began allowing missionaries to secretly conduct Mass in their home. I was present along with two of my KIGER cousins at the lovely ceremony. The house is long overdue for recognition of the role it played in the history of the Catholic Church in NJ. As the Kiger family historian I do have to note a couple errors in the above information though...The Sickler book is the source of the statement about "two GEIGER brothers, Matthias and Adam" but that is inaccurate. Adam was actually the oldest son of Matthias GEIGER and wife Anna Mary HALTER. He was age 7 when the family immigrated to America in 1738 while all of the other surviving children of the couple were born here and were quite a bit younger than Adam -- so it may have seemed to someone not studying the family closely that Adam was a brother--but he wasn't--he was a son of Matthias and is identified as such in Matthias' will of 1759. Also, we have never found any evidence that Adam had any connection to Wistarburgh Glass. He was a farmer and his father, Matthias, was a farmer and carpenter. We have never been sure exactly what connection Matthias had (directly) with the glasshouse but we suspect he may have been involved in building it. He wasn't a glassmaker though. His connection to the glassmaking community was through his wife, Anna Mary HALTER, whose brothers were two of the four master glassblowers commissioned by Wistar to run the glasshouse at Wistarburgh.
