    1. MOLLE family - French in Paterson silk industry

    3. Hello Philip and others on list, I don't have anything on the specific family (GARNIER) you asked about, but I do have a French connection to one of my Irish families in Paterson. I traced a family by the name of MOLLE, but failed to find any connection to my family. Perhaps this will be helpful to someone else on the list. William HARROLD (b. abt 1859 NJ, d. 22 Nov 1881 Paterson) was the son of William HARROLD and Judith/Julia FARRELL, both born Ireland. The younger William married Sarah __?__, who was born in France abt 1860. I'm still not sure what Sarah's last name was. I have never located a marriage record for them, but they must have married abt 1878. I have found Sarah's last name on only 2 records - the birth certs of her 2 children, both of whom died as infants. On one record, her surname is MOILY and on the other, MORTY. The only similar French name I could find in Paterson was MOLLE, so I traced the family of Joseph MOLLE. He first appeared in the Paterson City Directory in 1868 and Joseph Moll, silk weaver, h 62 Spring. In 1870, he was listed as Joseph Molle, saloon and weaver, 97 Slater, h do. and appeared in the 1870 census with his family on p.86/492, lines 27-30, 5th Ward Paterson (house #421, family #736): MOLLE Joseph, 40, M, Silk Weaver, personal estate $100, b. France; --- Mary, 32, F, Keeps House, b. France; --- Blanche, 4, F, at Home, b. NY; --- Camilla, 3, F, at Home, b. NJ. Sarah is obviously not with them. She would have been abt 10 years old in 1870. In the 1870s, Joseph also ran a boarding house called Molle House at 13 Green in Paterson. I followed this name in Paterson city directories and censuses til 1899. Joseph must have died abt 1887, then his wife appeared in late 1880s and early 1890s: Marie(or Mary) MOLLE, widow Joseph, h 128 5th ave. In 1895: Camille Molle, dyer, h 128 5th ave; in 1899: Charles Molle, helper, h 66 Market. Don't know if/how Charles was related to Joseph. If anyone is tracing this family or recognizes the Sarah who married William HARROLD, I'd like to hear from you. I have more on the MOLLE family... but could find no connection to Sarah. I also don't know exactly when Joseph MOLLE left France or where in France he came from, but his family was definitely French and associated with the silk industry in Paterson.
