There was a Panic of 1857, but it does not seem to be tied to a bank failure. The Panic of 1837 seems a more likely candidate because it saw the failure of many banks and was followed in 1839 by the failure of the Bank of the United States. Both these Panics were followed by Depressions. Economically, the U.S. was on a real roller coaster...so much for the Good Old Days! -- Wendy Freborg
