    3. Thank you to all who so kindly responded to a question on my old photo which I described as 'an old gentleman in a Civil War uniform wearing a hat with a laurel wreath encircling 3 unreadable letters with the number 35 at the top of the wreath.' The most popular response was 'You might have a photo of a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) veteran. The 35 could be his post number. The GAR were Union veterans and wore Civil War-type uniforms, sort of like the American Legion. Could date 1866 to 1920.' This is the most feasible explanation - the middle letter of the 3 above mentioned could be interpreted as an 'A' and I can find no 35th NJ Regiment. Also the time frame is in keeping with the estimated date of the photo. BTW, my gentleman wears a mourning band and a star shaped medallion on his chest. I know nothing of the GAR veterans' organization but with your gracious input I can now reasearch in a specific arena. Thanks so much. Kind regards to my ever-generous Passaic County friends.
