"Kinnelon: A History" by Lucy A. Meyer c. 1976 (a copy in Little Falls Library) In 1883, Hubbard S. Stickle sold a large tract of land including a lake and mines to Francis Sherwood Kinney, wealthy manufacturer of Sweet Caporal cigarettes. Over the years Kinney increased the estate through the purchase of neighbooring farms (most now only street names in Smoke Rise) to 5,000 acres. He built a four- story, eight chimney "cottage" and employed over 100 men to raise prize English sheep, dogs, horses and Brown Swiss cows. Francis Kinney's children were - sons, Morris and Warren (first mayor of the town of Kinnelon - which is what Francis called his "cottage") and daughter, Beatrice nicknamed Buffy. Francis Kinney died in 1923. Hope This Helps, Cathy DiPietro [email protected] listowner: NJSussex-L, Kinney-L
